Wrestler Dies After Head-First Fall at Hanoi Village Festival

A 44-year-old man has died after sustaining a catastrophic neck injury during a traditional wrestling bout at a village festival on the outskirts of Hanoi — a tragic incident that has shocked a tightly knit rural community and drawn renewed attention to safety at Vietnam’s large-scale cultural events.

The fatal accident occurred on February 26 at the annual Thai Lai village festival in Kim Anh Commune. According to local authorities, the wrestler was lifted by a younger opponent and dropped head-first onto the mat. He lost consciousness immediately and later died at hospital.

A Community in Mourning

Local officials confirmed the deceased was a resident of Thai Lai Village. Do Xuan Huan, Secretary of the Kim Anh Commune Party Committee, described the incident as “extremely unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” extending condolences to the family.

The festival is an officially sanctioned Lunar New Year celebration approved by the commune’s People’s Committee.
