Thirty-one traffic accidents occurred, killing 23 and injuring 15 others on January 23 (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month), the first day of the week-long Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.
They included 29 road accidents and two railway ones, according to the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.
All the numbers of accidents, deaths and injured people increased compared to the first day of the 2019 Tet holiday.
Also on January 23, traffic police nationwide dealt with 3,264 cases breaking road traffic rules and 363 other violations on waterways, revoking 526 driving licenses. Vietnam News Agency reports.
The annual traffic-related death toll in Vietnam has risen to almost 10,000 on average over the past decade, with most of the deceased being of working age, according to data from the Ministry of Public Security.
Up to 80% of traffic accidents were attributable to a lack of driver awareness of traffic laws, with common violations being exceeding the speed limit, overtaking or avoiding other vehicles incorrectly, driving under the influence and poor driving skills.
According to the ministry, traffic police have actively discovered many inadequacies in traffic activities in urban areas and on national highways and expressways, and they have petitioned the competent agencies to work out solutions to reduce the causes of traffic accidents and congestion.
