The Google AI legend inspired young developers in Ho Chi Minh City while highlighting a new vision for AI-powered scientific discovery.
As Southeast Asia emerges as a strategic hub for artificial intelligence talent, Vietnam welcomed one of the world’s most influential AI architects this week. Jeff Dean—widely regarded as one of the key engineers behind Google’s AI infrastructure and large-scale computing systems—visited Vietnam to meet with the local technology community, encourage young developers, and announce a significant grant for Fulbright University Vietnam.
The visit carried symbolic weight beyond the donation. Rather than traveling by private car, Dean reportedly chose to ride a Grab motorbike through the streets of Ho Chi Minh City on his way back to his hotel, embracing the city’s fast-paced urban culture in a gesture that quickly resonated across Vietnam’s tech community.
Dean is considered one of the defining figures in modern artificial intelligence. After joining Google in 1999, he spent nearly three decades helping build many of the company’s core technologies. He co-founded Google Brain, played a central role in developing Google’s large-scale machine learning infrastructure, and contributed to foundational technologies including TensorFlow, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and distributed AI systems that underpin many of today’s generative AI capabilities.
His visit also drew attention to the next chapter of his career. According to information shared during the event, Dean is now co-founding DiscoveryLoop, a new venture alongside prominent AI researchers Quoc V. Le (Lê Viết Quốc), Sanjay Ghemawat, and Oriol Vinyals. Rather than creating another conversational AI assistant, the company’s stated ambition is to build AI systems capable of accelerating scientific discovery by generating hypotheses, designing experiments, executing tests, analyzing results, learning from outcomes, and continuously refining new ideas.
If successful, such systems could significantly shorten the path from scientific questions to real-world breakthroughs across fields including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced materials, semiconductors, and engineering. The concept reflects a broader shift within the AI industry, where leading researchers are increasingly focusing on AI as a scientific collaborator rather than simply a productivity tool.
Dean’s appearance in Vietnam underscores the country’s growing importance in the global AI ecosystem. With a rapidly expanding developer community, increasing investment in digital infrastructure, and rising interest from major technology companies, Vietnam is positioning itself as more than just a destination for software outsourcing—it is seeking a larger role in AI research, innovation, and talent development.
As AI competition intensifies worldwide, visits by technology leaders such as Jeff Dean send a powerful message: the next generation of innovation may not be confined to Silicon Valley. Countries that cultivate world-class talent, research institutions, and entrepreneurial ecosystems could play an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
