Canoe Capsize Tragedy Claims 15 Lives: What Has the An Giang Department of Tourism Reported?

At 1:00 PM on July 11, the Ocean Pearl Island left Hon May Rut Ngoai for An Thoi International Port. It carried 32 Indian tourists, 3 crew members, and 1 guide. The boat traveled 400 meters before a mechanical failure caused it to sink. By 3:40 PM, rescuers reached all 36 passengers. They saved 21 people, but 15 Indian tourists perished.

The victims were part of a 105-person Indian tour group visiting Phu Quoc. Tam A Tourism (Hanoi) organized the 3-day trip. Minh Huy PQ served as the local provider. Three international guides accompanied the group. They all held valid licenses and spoke English to assist guests.

The Department immediately sent officials to Phu Quoc to manage the crisis. They coordinated with local authorities and supported the Indian Embassy. They also demanded that Minh Huy PQ submit all documents for verification. Due to these events, many firms have stopped island tours to review safety protocols. This has left numerous canoes idle at An Thoi International Port.

Management records show that Minh Huy PQ holds a valid international travel license. Even so, the firm has not provided a full account of the tragedy. They claim they are focusing on fixing the consequences.

The Department urges agencies to tighten control over transport vessels. They specifically suggest stricter checks on island departures. They also call for frequent weather updates during the rainy and peak seasons.

Finally, the Department proposes that officials evaluate “SB-standard” (enclosed) canoes. Many recent fatal accidents involved this boat type. The agency also demands more training for crew and guides. They insist that staff must teach tourists how to use life-saving equipment before every trip.
