The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the update based on information from the Vietnamese Consulate General in Fukuoka. To date, the disaster has killed one Vietnamese citizen and injured several others.
Upon receiving the news, Vietnamese diplomatic missions acted immediately. They coordinated with local authorities, companies, labor unions, and the victim’s family. Together, they verified details and deployed protection measures.
Diplomatic officials went directly to the scene to work with relevant agencies. They helped the family complete required legal procedures to protect the victim’s rights. Furthermore, officials visited and encouraged Vietnamese workers at the company and nearby areas.
For citizens with injuries or damaged homes, Vietnamese representative agencies partnered with the Vietnamese Association in Kumamoto. They assessed the situation, made direct visits, and coordinated relief support. During this process, diplomatic missions praised many Vietnamese citizens for actively helping the local community.

In the coming days, diplomatic missions will continue working closely with Kumamoto authorities and local Vietnamese associations. They will monitor citizens’ safety and quickly deploy needed protection measures.
Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency urges residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks over the next 1-2 weeks. Vietnamese citizens in Kumamoto should follow safety warnings from local authorities, diplomatic missions, and community groups.
Japanese media reported that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed 13 deaths from the Kumamoto earthquakes. This total includes several indirect casualties.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck on July 28 off the coast of Kumamoto Prefecture. It occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers beneath the seabed.
