Dogecoin’s 11% Drop Leads Losses in Crypto Majors as Bitcoin Sours Festive Mood

“We believe the root cause of the morning’s crash to be the market’s overly bullish positioning,” QCP traders said in a Friday note.

Losses in bitcoin (BTC) and other crypto majors extended to their third straight day, as risk-off behavior after this week’s FOMC meeting and general profit-taking contributed to heavy market sentiment.

BTC dropped 4.2% in the past 24 hours, with Solana’s SOL, ether (ETH) and Cardano’s ADA falling as much as 9%. Dogecoin slid the most with an 11% drop, extending weekly losses to over 21%.

The broad-based CoinDesk 20 (CD20), an index of the largest tokens by market cap, fell 5.5%. That spread over to futures markets, with over $890 million in long and short liquidations in the past 24 hours.

Reaction to a hawkish FOMC triggered a sharp selloff across all risk assets on Wednesday and Thursday. Nasdaq plummeted 3.5%, S&P 500 dropped 2.9% and BTC declined more than 6% since the meeting, where Fed chair Jerome Powell hinted at only a few rate cuts in 2025.

Powell then said at a post-FOMC press conference that the central bank wasn’t allowed to own bitcoin under current regulations — in response to a question about President-elect Donald Trump’s strategic reserve promises.

Traders at Singapore-based QCP Capital attributed the market crash to overly bullish sentiment in the past month.

“While it is easy to blame the selloff on the Fed’s hawkish cut, we believe the root cause of the morning’s crash to be market’s overly bullish positioning,” QCP said in a Telegram broadcast.

“Since the election, risk assets have enjoyed an impressive one-sided run, leaving the market extremely vulnerable to any shocks. While the Fed’s 25bps cut was expected, the source of panic can be attributed to the dot plot, which was revised lower. Due to persistent inflation, the Fed now projects two rate cuts for 2025 compared to the market’s consensus of 3 rate cuts,” QCP added.

A drop in bitcoin comes amid an otherwise bullish period for the asset.

December tends to be historically bullish for bitcoin in a move colloquially termed the “Santa Claus Rally.” Data from the past eight years shows that bitcoin ended December in the green six times since 2015, running at least 8% to as much as 46% (in the outlier year of 2020).

Seasonality is the tendency of assets to experience regular and predictable changes that recur every calendar year. While it may look random, possible reasons range from profit-taking around tax season in April and May, which causes drawdowns, to the generally bullish November and December, a sign of increased demand ahead of holiday season.

HCMC’s First Metro Line to Officially Open on Dec. 22, Heralding a New Era for Urban Transport

Ho Chi Minh City’s much-anticipated Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line is set to commence operations on December 22, marking a historic milestone as the city’s first-ever metro line.

Ticket prices are expected to start at just VND6,000 (24 U.S. cents) per ride, making this modern urban transit system both accessible and affordable.

The HCMC Management Authority for Urban Railways, the project’s main investor, announced on Thursday that the metro line has been fully completed and is currently undergoing final procedural approvals ahead of its grand opening.

Affordable and Inclusive Ticketing System

The metro will offer a range of ticket options to suit diverse passenger needs. Single-ride tickets will cost between VND6,000 and VND20,000, while a monthly pass will be available for VND300,000. Students will benefit from a 50% discount on monthly passes, and free rides will be provided to specific groups, including the elderly and disabled. Additionally, day passes and three-day passes will be available for VND40,000 and VND90,000, respectively.

In a bid to encourage metro use, passengers on the metro and 17 connecting bus lines will enjoy free tickets during the first 30 days of operation.

Man Sets Fire to Karaoke Bar in Hanoi, Killing 11 After Dispute

Cao Van Hung, a 51-year-old man, has been detained and charged with murder after confessing to setting fire to a karaoke bar in Hanoi, resulting in the death of 11 people.

The tragic incident unfolded on the night of December 18 at a karaoke venue located at 258 Pham Van Dong Street in Bac Tu Liem District. According to initial investigations, Hung was drinking alone at the establishment when he got into a conflict with a group of seven patrons. The dispute escalated, leading to a physical altercation on Pham Van Dong Street, where Hung was reportedly surrounded and beaten.

Following the fight, Hung purchased a plastic bucket and approximately seven liters of gasoline for 150,000 VND at a nearby store. Around 11 p.m., he returned to the karaoke bar and threw the gasoline inside the premises, igniting it moments later.

The fire quickly consumed the ground floor, spreading to furniture and motorbikes parked inside. The building, described as having a narrow, enclosed layout with limited escape routes, trapped many of the patrons and staff inside. Authorities reported that 16 people were in the bar at the time, and the fire blocked the main exit.

By the time the fire was extinguished at 11:40 p.m., 11 people had lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at E Hospital.

Investigators revealed that Hung has a criminal history, including two previous convictions for robbery and theft. While his registered residence is in Co Nhue 2 Ward, Bac Tu Liem District, he has been living in Dai Mach Commune, Dong Anh District.

NFTs Are Making a Comeback as Trading Volumes Surge: Galaxy Research

Leading marketplaces such as OpenSea, Blur and Magic Eden have seen increased activity since November, the report said.

The non-fungible token (NFT) market is showing signs of recovery, Galaxy Research said in a report Monday.

NFTs are digital assets on a blockchain that represent ownership of virtual or physical items and can be sold or traded.

NFT volumes had been declining for most of the year, but began to reverse in November following the U.S. elections and the ensuing crypto market rally.

Weekly NFT trading volumes exceeded $100 million in early November for the first time since May, reaching $172 million on Dec. 2, Galaxy said.

“This resurgence has been primarily driven by increased activity among the top 25 collections by market cap,” analyst Gabe Parker wrote, with increased participation across leading marketplaces such as OpenSea, Blur and Magic Eden.

Blur and OpenSea were responsible for 60% and 27% respectively of the total volume over the last 30 days, the report noted.

NFTs linked to the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem have outperformed. Pudgy Penguins and Lil Pudgys collections saw their floor prices rise 206% and 265% respectively, the report added.

BTC takes a breather after an indecisive Tuesday, as the Fed is expected to cut rates Wednesday while signaling slower easing next year.

Bitcoin (BTC) is taking a breather, experiencing selling pressure after Tuesday’s indecisive price action marked by a Doji candle. This seems to be a classic case of traders de-risking in anticipation of an expected hawkish Fed rate cut later Wednesday.

The leading cryptocurrency by market value traded around $103,750, marking a 2% drop for the day, according to TradingView and CoinDesk data. Prices had surged to a record high of over $108,000 on Tuesday but failed to maintain those gains, ending the UTC day flat. That formed a ‘doji,’ a candlestick pattern that signifies indecision and potential bullish exhaustion when seen at record highs.

As expected, bitcoin’s decline has resulted in even larger losses for alternative cryptocurrencies, but some majors, such as XRP, SOL, and ETH, are experiencing losses comparable to BTC.

The Fed will announce the rate decision, the interest rate dot plot, projections, and economic forecasts at 14:00 ET. Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference will be held a half hour later.

The consensus is that the Fed will cut rates by 25 basis points to the 4.25% to 4.5% range, marking a total easing of 100 basis points since September. But, the dot plot is expected to show fewer rate cuts for next year.

“The risk of slightly stronger near-term growth with the threat of higher inflation – tariffs putting up prices of goods and immigration controls potentially lifting wages and costs in the likes of agriculture, construction and hospitality sectors – means that we expect them to signal only three rate cuts in 2025. Previously, they had suggested four,” analysts at ING said in a note to clients.

“We look for 25bp of cuts per quarter in 2025 with a terminal rate of around 3.75% in the third quarter,” analysts added, noting the possibility of the Fed revising their projections for economic growth and inflation.

These so-called hawkish expectations are likely fueling the de-risking in the crypto market that is looking for reasons to correct, having seen prices for BTC soar from $70,000 to over $100,000 in less than two months.

It’s important to note that fewer rate cuts do not necessarily mean tightening; easing is still on the table. This suggests that the path of least resistance for risk assets remains tilted toward the upside.

Asia’s largest cruise ship docks at Cam Ranh International Port for the first time

Khanh Hoa Super cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas carrying more than 4,700 international guests docked at Cam Ranh International Port, visiting Khanh Hoa on the morning of December 13.

Tourists from Europe, Asia, and America get off the ship at around 6am, visit Nha Trang city and the suburbs, experience local sightseeing by cyclo, visit Cai River, and visit the countryside. Some guests choose to experience free sightseeing by shuttle bus.

At 4:00 p.m., the ship left the port for Hong Kong.

Spectrum of the Seas is the largest and most modern cruise ship operating in Asia. The ship is 347 m long, nearly 50 m wide, 16 floors high, built in Germany in 2019 at a cost of 940 million USD and is equipped with the world’s largest indoor entertainment and sports complex.

This is the first time the ship has docked at Cam Ranh International Port. In September, the international superyacht took passengers to visit Nha Trang Bay but was unable to enter due to repairs at Nha Trang International Port, forcing passengers to transfer by small boat. The closure of Nha Trang Port for repairs and the unknown reopening date has caused more than 10 cruise ships carrying tens of thousands of international passengers to Nha Trang to be canceled .

Khanh Hoa Department of Tourism then proposed Tan Cang Company Limited and Navy Region 4 to create conditions for businesses to welcome guests through Cam Ranh International Port.

Cam Ranh International Port is 5 nautical miles from the international shipping route, over 2 km long, including two wharves that can accommodate large passenger ships up to 226,000 GT (over 600,000 m3). Ships can dock directly at the wharf so there is no need to transfer passengers by small boats.

This year, Khanh Hoa welcomed 28 international cruise ships with nearly 60,000 tourists coming ashore for sightseeing.
