In the 55 km, French runner Constance Louasse came first in the women’s race while Do Trong Nhon from host Vietnam finished first in the men’s category.

Paige Ann Madison from the US and Ha Nhat of Vietnam finished first in the women’s and men’s full marathon of 42 km, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the 25 km race, Stephanie Davidson from France secured the first place in the women’s category and Le Van Tuan Anh of Vietnam won in the men’s race.

Vietnamese Le Thi Lan and French Sebastien Houssin triumphed in the women’s and men’s 10 km routes, respectively.

According to VNA, This is the third race in the Vietnam Trail Series held by Topas Travel, aiming to encourage local sporting spirit and promote tourism. Topas also organises the Vietnam Mountain Marathon, one of the biggest ultra-running events in Asia.

Unlike Sa Pa town in Lao Cai province and Moc Chau district in Son La province, Pu Luong has seen few domestic and foreign tourists. The organising board has been working with residents of the finishing location, Ban Hang village, since 2017, and helped 30 households offer homestay services for visitors during the race.

Starting its business in Vietnam in the 1990s, Topas Travel has provided adventure tourism products and comfortable accommodation. Its Topas Ecolodge was put on the National Geographic’s list of most unique lodges in the world.

China exempts tariffs on 33 Vietnamese seafood exports

Advertisements

China has exempted tariffs on 33 kinds of Vietnamese seafood exports, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has said.

The products include lobster, tiger prawn, sea shrimp, cod, clams, frozen pangasius fish, round scads, tuna and octopus. More than 150 Vietnamese enterprises export seafood products to China, including about 45 pangasius enterprises and nearly 50 shrimp exporting enterprises, among other seafood enterprises, according to VASEP.

With China easing its import policy, Vietnam is expected to enhance its exports to the world’s most populous market. China is considered one of the most important markets for Vietnamese seafood, with average export value from Vietnam to China reaching over USD1 billion per year.

In 2017, Vietnamese seafood export value to China increased nearly 50 per cent year-on-year to USD1.3 billion, according to the association. However, the export value fell slightly by 5 per cent year-on-year in 2018 to USD1.2 billion. It also fell by 5 per cent in the first quarter of the year, to USD239 million.

VASEP Secretary General said that the fishery industry sets a target to export over USD1.5 billion seafood products this year to China, where seafood consumption is increasing. Large provinces in China are concerned about direct trading activities with Vietnamese seafood firms instead of buying via intermediaries. As e-commerce in China is developing quickly, many kinds of Vietnamese seafood have been introduced on e-commerce platforms. He also said that Vietnam could reach its target of seafood export value, which would be higher than the USD1.2 billion recorded last year.

Meanwhile, besides businesses’ efforts to ensure quality standards, the State must strictly control cross-border export activities of seafood products to China to ensure fair competition for Vietnamese seafood businesses.

Sex Trafficking Mars the Mystique of Cannes Film Festival

Advertisements

Each May, young women arrive in the South of France with big-screen ambitions, but even after the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo movement, their journey to Hollywood often begins with producers promising movie roles and visas in return for sex.

In 2014, Kadian Noble met Harvey Weinstein in the lobby of the Majestic Hotel in Cannes. After some small talk, he instructed the aspiring actress to come upstairs so that he could have a look at her reel. Noble, who was 27 and from the U.K., had previously met the since-disgraced mogul in London, where he told her he liked her look and was eager to cast her in one of his movies. To make the whole matter seem legit, he introduced Noble during that London encounter to Oprah Winfrey, an idol of Noble’s.

Before Hollywood’s #MeToo awakening in 2017, there was nothing unusual about taking a meeting alone in a hotel room during the Cannes Film Festival. Hundreds of U.S. film companies like The Weinstein Company booked suites at glorious resorts along the Croisette like the Majestic and used them as makeshift offices during the festival and accompanying market.

“It was a case of this man who creates masterpieces has just chosen me, telling me, ‘I have something in mind for you. It’s going to be good for you,’ ” Noble tells THR. “It sounds like I was delusional at the time to believe all of that, but I did believe it.”

Once they were in the room, Weinstein put Noble on the phone with a man who Weinstein said was a producer. The man spoke so fast that she didn’t catch his name. He told her to be “a good girl” and comply with Weinstein’s wishes. “He was just like, ‘Harvey has told me about you. These things are going to happen for you.’ But it was very vague, and it made no sense,” she adds.

Weinstein then began watching the actress’ reel. What happened next, according to Noble, was sudden and unexpected, culminating with Weinstein sexually assaulting her in the bathroom.

Although Noble’s story rings familiar given the number of women who have emerged since October 2017, her lawyer took a novel approach in seeking justice. Attorney Jeff Herman, who has represented alleged sexual abuse victims of director Bryan Singer and billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, filed a federal suit in New York in November 2017 accusing the film titan of violating sex trafficking laws (at the time the Noble suit was filed, Weinstein released a statement denying any allegations of nonconsensual sex).

The fact that Cannes has become publicly associated with sex trafficking certainly sparked headlines. And yawns. After all, for decades, the festival — with its booming yacht circuit and influx of wannabe actresses and uber-wealth — had been ground zero for nefarious activity, including sex trafficking in all its myriad forms. What’s more surprising is that despite the tidal shift in awareness post-#MeToo, bad behavior on the Cannes party scene persists.

Under the Obama administration, the federal sex trafficking laws were amended to create jurisdiction over U.S. citizens violating these laws in foreign countries. The amendment allowed Herman to make a claim against Weinstein because he’s a U.S. citizen and allegedly violated federal sex trafficking laws while in France.

Herman’s suit has been challenged, but Judge Robert Sweet of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York denied Weinstein’s motion to dismiss and has allowed the case to move forward.

Herman has another client — whom he declined to name — who alleges that she was raped by Weinstein in the late 1990s at Cannes. “You’re talking about a 20-year span of him utilizing the Cannes Film Festival for this purpose,” he says.

Still, Herman says it’s important to distinguish the Cannes casting couch from what rises to the level of sex trafficking.

“The casting couch is [a form of] sexual harassment. It’s using your position of power to coerce women to get them to agree to engage in sexual activity for a part,” he says. “You can be morally offended by that and [say it’s] ethically wrong, but those are two adults making that decision. What makes it sex trafficking with regard to Harvey is that he coerced these women using violence, threats, fraud. They basically didn’t have a choice. And one way or another, once he had them in the room, he was having sex with them or sexually assaulting them.”

Another form of sex trafficking that is bubbling under the radar on the Riviera but obvious to most producers in the know is one in which non-U.S. citizens meet film industry connectors on the Cannes yacht circuit. The go-betweens help the would-be actresses, often still in their teens and hailing from countries ranging from Britain to former Soviet bloc states, gain legal entry into the U.S. and land a small or nonspeaking role in an American movie. The unspoken quid pro quo is that once in the U.S., they are lent out — sexually — to other powerful industry men. With the threat of her H-1 visa being revoked, the actress effectively can’t say no or go to the police.

“I have definitely seen cases where you see someone at Cannes in May, then you’re in L.A. in September, and they’re there,” says one producer who has witnessed the gambit.

In fact, the producer says it should raise a red flag any time you see a foreign-born actress with no credits suddenly make her way into a U.S.-shot movie. “No one would legitimately pay for the H-1 visa for that kind of role. No way. It costs four or five thousand bucks,” he says. “As a producer, there’s no chance that there’s this one-liner that should be a local hire [and] that we’re going to go with a first-timer from Ukraine and get a work visa for her.”

And yet, it happens with disturbing frequency, with the Cannes Film Festival playing a pivotal role. THR has learned of at least one now-prominent actress who made her first connections on a Cannes yacht and quickly landed her debut role in a U.S.-shot movie. In exchange, she told confidants, she was passed around to a group of Hollywood men, sometimes coerced. Another name actress has a nearly identical trajectory. Both declined to speak to THR.

How the young women wind up in Cannes in the first place is a bit of a mystery given the price of travel and accommodations during the festival. But a source familiar with the inner workings of yacht life says services that pay to bring women to such places are particularly reliant on Eastern Europeans and will groom them in their home countries before moving them to high-profile events. Girls who have received refinement training — so they will blend in at premieres and posh restaurants — typically fetch more for the service. As to who is paying, well-heeled film financiers often are footing the bill. One London-based woman who previously ran such a service was known by producers as a point person for the scheme but declined to talk to THR, fearful of being on the record.

“It’s important to point out that to be trafficked, you don’t have to be locked up somewhere,” says Jean Bruggeman, executive director of Freedom Network USA, which works with victims of human trafficking. “The fact that people have freedom of movement, that’s not relevant. The question is: Is there a level of coercion? In the trafficking of foreign nationals, the methods of coercion are often very different from the trafficking of U.S. citizens because the immigration system is designed in such a way as to give all power to the employer.”

Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, an authority on human trafficking who frequently appears as an expert witness in legal cases, says most victims never come forward, making statistics meaningless. “We do know that this crime, because of its clandestine nature, is significantly underreported,” she says. “So, as far as measuring prevalence, we really don’t have those metrics to say how often this happens because of how underreported it is. Even if it is reported, [there is] a low-variable likelihood of successful conviction because of how difficult a crime it is to successfully litigate. And oftentimes the [accused] mount a very zealous defense and have the finances to do so.”

Epstein, for one, avoided a lifetime prison sentence for underage sex trafficking and abuse and instead served just 13 months thanks to a pitbull legal team that included Alan Dershowitz.

As for Noble, she says she let one of Weinstein’s female assistants know after the encounter that “he forced himself on me,” she says. “And her advice was to put it in a letter to him because ‘maybe he doesn’t realize his actions,’ and I should ‘put my skills into expressing myself.’ ”

The case is moving forward. However, Judge Sweet passed away in April, and a trial date has not yet been scheduled. While there are both state and federal laws in play for sex trafficking, penalties at the federal level start with 10- to 15-year minimums.

Now 32, Noble says she has no intention of returning to Cannes. Instead, she is spending more time pursuing film and TV work in Los Angeles. But she says the experience at the Majestic has left her with health issues, and she’s wary of the intentions of men in the business.

“I did have more trust in people [before], if somebody approached me and was talking about wanting to work with me,” she says. “But now I just always feel like most people are talking shit.”

5 Key Skills Every Property Investor Should Have

Advertisements
By Sophie K

Buying and selling properties for profit is a fantastic way to drive personal income (not to mention the rental returns you generate along the way). But before you become a millionaire master investor, you’ll need to develop a few crucial abilities. These skills are pretty much universal, and apply whether you are investing in an apartment in thriving Vietnam’s Da Nang, or looking for a property for sale in Dubai.
In this industry, preparation is everything. People will know right away if you are trying to fake your way to proficiency. Let’s dive into five key skills you’ll need to succeed as a property investor.

Become a People Person

Relationships are everything is the property investment world. Put on a smile and grab a stack of business cards because in order build these partnerships, networking is going to become a valuable skill. Your income will depend greatly on the quality of associates you are able to attract. Some types of individuals you’ll need to woo are realtors, property managers, repair contractors, as well as other prospective buyers and sellers themselves. As you build trust, they may start to prefer you over other investors. You’ll get the call instead when they have a great deal to share. A place to start in honing your people skills is by reading the classic How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It’s been a best seller for decades, for good reason.

Be a Diligent Researcher

Whether you intend to flip a house quickly or hold a property for long-term growth, you’ll need to do extensive in-depth research. One of the very first things you’ll want to do is a thorough investigation of real estate markets to determine which ones make the most sense for your investment. At various times, some markets may be stagnated, while others are in the midst of a boom (or even better, on the cusp of one). Ask pointed questions such as, “are property values trending up or down?” and, “what are people looking for most in this neighborhood?” Another thing to carefully search out is which repair contractors you’d trust in the likely event your property will need some work done. Expect to put in some serious time at the keyboard.

Get Passionate About Risk Mitigation

Once you’ve made a few connections and have some well-researched properties in your sights, you’re probably feeling ready to pull the trigger. But before you do, you’ll want to consider how exactly you’ll mitigate your risk. If the deal goes sour or there is a legal case brought against you, the offended party could legally clear out your entire bank account. To prevent this, it’s important to make your investments under the title of an LLC or corporation. This will provide a layer of protection between any claimant and your personal assets. Additionally, it’s never a good idea to make investments based on “a good feeling.” When it comes time to make a decision, be ready to back it up with solid facts and figures. No one will finance “a good feeling” anyhow.

Be a Negotiator

The lower your costs, the higher your profits will be. In the property investment world, your negotiation skills will play a large role in what chunk your costs take out of the pie. Since you’re already working on developing a keen personability, this skill shouldn’t be much of a stretch. Good negotiation is all about finding a compromise so your personal likeability plays a major role in how successful you will be. It helps if you’ve already begun to cultivate a great working relationship well before making the “big ask.” Additionally, getting to the absolute lowest number possible is not worth ruining a great relationship. Try not to be such a shark that you take advantage. Next time you come around for a favor, the burned party will most likely send you packing.

Learn to Outsource

Even after you’ve taken each and every one of these steps and feel like the wizard property investing, don’t try to do everything yourself. For one, you’re probably not an expert in every field, and it’s not efficient for you to become one. This is why you should certainly bring in professionals to guide, help, and mentor you along the way. A lawyer would advise you how to properly incorporate your activities, an accountant can answer all tax questions, and hire a real plumber, please.

Your tenants will not be amused if the toilet spontaneously floods the house. Lastly, it would be wise to seek a mentor to show you how they were able to have success as an investor. This way, you don’t have to make any of the mistakes that they already made.

Property investment is a learned ability that will take years of experience to fully refine, but you will never be without helpful resources. There are many wonderful books on the topic, such as The ABCs of Real Estate Investing by Ken McElroy to mine for info. Also available are a number of online courses, podcasts, and YouTube videos on the subject that you can access for free. Before launching into your own business, take some time to really self-evaluate your readiness to begin the journey.

Opting for a Private Airport Transfer Service over other Options

Advertisements

Airport Transfer is either the start of a journey or the last leg of one. Almost everyone prefers that the transfer goes smoothly since it can be a difference between making it to a flight in time. A reliable transfer service can help a traveler relax and reach a hotel, home, or a business meeting in a safe manner.

There is more to simply traveling to and fro from the Airport. For example, some of us like to arrive at an airport in style and opt for Limo service Westfield NJ, while for others, it is a requirement, business executives require a decent airport transit for many reasons. Besides this, many of us have a party to visit or an executive meeting to attend and wish to do so in style. Many of us tend to lose patience as well after landing, thus gathering luggage and seeking out a cab or bus might seem quite an ordeal.

Benefits of a professional Airport Transfer Service

There are many factors to look out for selecting a transfer service, of which many of us are already aware. Some of us like to travel in style while others seek the most convenient method of transport. Many people prefer traveling to the airport in a luxury sedan, an SUV or avail a car rental in Westfield, NJ. All this and more is possible for those who opt for a professional transfer service.

Here are the benefits of selecting a special Airport service:

  • A local driver or chauffeur is aware of all local routes and knows the best route to select in every condition.
  • There is flexibility in terms of pick and drop of points along with a comfortable journey.
  • Opting for an alternative of car rental means needing to worry about the fuel, verifying ID, as well as lengthy paperwork.
  • While visiting a new city or country, it is likely that you are not aware of road conditions or not prepared for traffic conditions either. This is the last thing one would want to deal with while to or from an Airport.
  • An Airport transport bus service is a good option, however, there are limitations on drop-off, and pick up points and it is less convenient too.
  • Opting for a special car rental service that has airport transfer option in many popular cities you frequent has an added advantage of using the same service all times and avail special benefits.
  • Customers who use the same car rental service are likely to be offered better customer services as well.
  • As an added feature, they also often keep track of customer’s fight to ensure there are no delays.
  • For those who opt for Limo service Westfield, NJ for Airport transfer gets an added feature of extra security as well. Besides, having a highly trained chauffer who will plan ahead to fulfill your requirements; they will make sure you reach any destination in a timely manner.

Thus, those who do opt for a private Airport Transfer service often find doing so more cost effective. Drivers are likely to be more experienced and have an ability to offer a better service, be more convenient, have ease of accessibility provide a comfortable ride; besides having a wide range of vehicles to choose from. Those offering such a service are also likely to have several other services like Wedding hire, a limo service in Westfield, NJ for a night out in the town, special prom services, or even special visit to a casino.

In Vietnam, you can search for a professional reliable transport service on Google, it’s easy to find private transfer offering from the airport to the hotel in modern air conditioned transportation. On time every time that you can rely on.

According to a search result, your flight information will be tracked by local operator with flight carrier and with the airport. If your flight gets delayed, the driver will wait until it arrives. The company offers Guaranteed pick-up, free waiting time up to 120 minutes, while you obtain the visa at customs, your friendly driver waits outside. Even, if you missed the pick-up because of unexpected last minute flight change and no hidden fees committed.

Virtual store presents images of more than 100 products on large-format posters, which can then be purchased online.

The VinMart 4.0 virtual store run by VinCommerce under the Vingroup has been launched in Vietnam.

VinMart 4.0 presents images of more than 100 products on large-format posters. Products and brands are arranged in eye-catching color arrangements similar to actual counters and shelves in supermarkets.

The virtual stores will be placed in densely-populated areas such as dormitories, office buildings, schools, and bus stops.

Customers need only open the VinID app, select the Scan & Go feature, scan the QR code of the products they wish to buy at VinMart 4.0, and pay with the VinID app.

VinMart will deliver goods within two to four hours. To begin with, it has selected 20 locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for its virtual stores and will continue to expand to other locations around the country.

Along with VinMart 4.0, customers can also experience “buying from afar” through the Smart Shopping Handbook. The handbook has two versions – paper and online – helping customers to select and buy products directly by scanning QR codes on the Scan & Go feature. More than 800 items are divided into groups, meeting the need for essential consumer goods such as food, utensils, and personal care products.

The VinMart 4.0 virtual store and Smart Shopping Handbook are the first such models applied in Vietnam, enabling customers to buy goods remotely without having to go to the supermarket. The Scan & Go feature was put into operation in March, not only adding many items, especially fresh products and green vegetables, but also expanding the scope from 13 to 73 VinMart stores nationwide.

As a pioneer in bringing such modern shopping technologies to Vietnam, which are developed to suit local consumers, VinCommerce and VinID want to create a revolution in retail consumption in Vietnam, offering solutions to save time and increase utilities.

VinMart Scan & Go also brings consumers access and familiarization with the trend of modern cashless payments in the world through of activating e-wallets on the VinID app or using bank cards quickly and securely.

With upgrades and additional features to come on Scan & Go, VinCommerce continues to affirm its pioneering role in applying technology 4.0 and is the leading retailer in the convenient multi-channel supermarket model in Vietnam, seeing Vietnamese retail catch up with retail technology around the world.

Auchan shocked at sales riot

Advertisements

A representative from Supermarket giant Auchan Vietnam expressed shock at what they described as shameful behaviour customers at a recent sale at its stores.

According to Vu Thi Thu Nuong, Anchan Vietnam’s communication manager, Auchan Vietnam announced that it would close 15 of its 18 stores in the country on June 3 due to losses. The three remaining locations are all in Ho Chi Minh City, two in District 7 and the other in Tan Binh District.

The retailer has offered big discounts at its shops in HCM City, Hanoi and Tay Ninh, on May 20-31, attracting a huge number of customers who wanted to catch the rare opportunity.

Many people tried to rummage products on shelves to find what they wanted to buy or even opened bottles of shampoos or shower gel to test. Some children opened and drank cartons of milk and canned juices despite store staff attempting to stop them.

Nuong said the staff were shocked and disappointed at the behaviour, adding it had caused great losses for the firm.

Some people took advantage of the chaos to steal the products.

Auchan initially planned two discount programmes with 25% for the first and up to 75% for the second. But following the chaos, the company would reconsider.

To date, Auchan has not yet reported the specific figures on the losses in 15 stores which provided discounts.

Controversy around The Third Wife’s use of child actress in sex scenes deepens

Advertisements

The movie The Third Wife has sparked off a public debate and outcry over its use of a 13-year-old actress in intimate scenes.
Though Nguyen Phuong Tra My’s family had consented, having a child act in sensitive scenes violates the Law on Children and Labour Code, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung (Molisa) said on Friday.

In The Third Wife (aka Vo Ba in Vietnamese) directed by Nguyen Phuong Anh (Ash Mayfair), My plays the third wife of a landowner in the 19th century. She has some sexually intimate scenes with her husband played by Le Vu Long and his second wife, played by Mai Thu Huong aka Maya.

Officials working in child protection spoke out against the use of the child actress in such scenes saying they could have a psychological effect on her.

The children’s department under the ministry also expressed disapproval. Dang Hoa Nam, its head, said: “The Third Wife uses 13-year-old actress Tra My in sensitive scenes and contains inappropriate dialogues, this is not allowed.”

“We will examine whether the producer and director performs the action of coaxing children into doing pornographic and unhealthy activities,” he said.

“The film crew could have definitely used a body double or actress above 18 for the scenes,” he added.

This is done by many directors. In the 2018 movie Thach Thao (Heather), for a rape scene involving a high-school student, the director used a 21-year-old body double. In television series Quynh Bup Be (Quynh Doll) last year, a 30-year-old actress played a 16-year-old sold to a brothel.

Last Monday the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism instructed the Cinema Department to review the licensing of the film.

But the chorus of protests notwithstanding, it is unclear if The Third Wife’s makers broke the laws. Since the Cinema Law has not specified regulations concerning adolescences acting in sexual scenes, it is hard to identify to what extent children can join sexual scenes, according to filmmakers and industry insiders.

Some filmmakers were noncommittal. Director Hong Anh said: “I think both opposing and supporting sides have their points. Our law in this case is unclear.”

The producers said they broke no law in producing and distributing the film, and it was approved by the Cinema Department for release in Vietnam.

My was represented by her mother in the contract. The crew took every measure to protect her while filming sensitive scenes, with only women – the director, assistant director and camerawoman -being on the set.

“When filming the ‘hot’ scene, the crew ensured the camera angles and [body] accessories prevented any [exposure] but still managed to create an effect of intimacy between them,” producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc said.

My too said she was well protected on the sets. She wore a protective sheath while her mother closely followed the filming.

Following the public uproar, the film producers decided to pull it from cinemas from May 21.

But its foreign release will go ahead as planned. It was released in the U.S. on May 15 and is set to be shown in 27 other markets.

The Third Wife is a critically acclaimed debut feature for Mayfair. The film has won several prizes at international festivals including the NETPAC Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (Canada), TVE-Another Look award at the San Sebastian Film Festival (Spain) and Best Film award at the Kolkata International Film Festival (India).

Crawfish widely available as favorite dish in Vietnam despite import ban

Advertisements

Crawfish dishes remain readily available for consumers in Vietnam even though the breeding and importation of the crustacean is prohibited in the Southeast Asian country.

Crawfish, also known as crayfish or Louisiana crayfish for their popularity in the namesake state of the U.S., are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, to which they are related.

The crustacean is considered an exotic invasive species in Vietnam, as it can eat both live and dead animals and plants, thus threatening the country’s bio-diversity and agricultural production, experts said.

The aquatic species is banned from being bred and imported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

But crawfish are still a dish favored by many Vietnamese consumers, which leads to the breeding and import ban just failing to keep people from enjoying them.

Diners serving crawfish dishes are not hard to find in Ho Chi Minh City, and suppliers of the exotic aquatic creatures are also aplenty.

Hang, a crawfish dealer in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 10, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that her customers are eateries and restaurants not only from the southern metropolis but also neighboring Binh Duong Province and the Mekong Delta.

At the V.C. seafood restaurant in District 1, which sources live crawfish from Hang, the meal is openly advertised on the menu.

The restaurant manager told Tuoi Tre that eight out of ten customers, both Vietnamese and foreigners, order crawfish.

He added that the restaurant usually sources 50kg of crawfish from Hang at a time, and the crustaceans will be frozen to keep them fresh longer.

Live crawfish are also available for purchase on Facebook, with online sellers asking VND290,000-750,000 (US$12.47-32.25) per kg depending on each type.

Most of the online traders sell frozen crawfish to dodge the ban, believing that the import prohibition only applies to live creatures.

“Only live crawfish are banned from entering Vietnam as they can harm agriculture, while processed ones are allowed to be imported as they pose no threats,” Hong, an online crawfish seller in Ho Chi Minh City, told Tuoi Tre.

Le Tran Nguyen Hung, deputy head of the Directorate of Fisheries’ Department of Aquatic Resources Conservation and Development, fell short of confirming if Hong was right, instead saying that his agency is only responsible for overseeing the storage, transport, trading, and breeding of live crawfish.

“The customs and market watchogs are assigned to deal with frozen crawfish,” he told Tuoi Tre.

Tran Huu Linh, general director of the General Department for Market Management, said local-level market surveillance agencies have been tasked with looking into the trading of crawfish in their respective localities.

As many as 945kg of crawfish have been seized by customs in the northern province of Lao Cai since the beginning of this month.

The third-largest city of Vietnam, Da Nang has gone from a place that is “best known for being a gateway to UNESCO Heritage town of Hoi An” to an attraction “with a strong foodie scene and new hotels and resorts popping up on a five-mile-long beach strip”, the newspaper said

It advises travelers not to leave without having a bowl of Mì Quảng (Quang noodle soup), “the justifiably famous local noodle soup,” which is only US$1 at a street-food stall.

The number of visitors to Da Nang increased 15.5 percent year-on-year to 7.6 million in 2018, including 2.8 million foreigners, a 23.3 per cent increase from a year earlier, according to the Department of Tourism.

Lawmakers call for tougher drink-driving penalties

Advertisements

Lawmakers have mooted making drink-driving a criminal offence, whether they cause an accident or not.

Sung A Hong, National Assembly (NA) deputy from northern Dien Bien province, made the suggestion on May 23 during discussions on a draft law on alcohol harm prevention.

Parliamentarians agreed on the need for stiffer penalties on drunk drivers, as currently the law only allows for fines or a licence suspension for drink-driving without causing an accident.

According to Nguyen Thanh Hai, head of the NA’s Deputy Ombudsman Committee, every year about 30 percent of social disorders is caused by drunk people, while up to 70 percent of criminal offences are committed by drunk people aged 16 to 25.

Vietnamese people spend nearly 100 billion VND (roughly 4.2 million USD) per year on alcohol. The State collects 50 trillion VND (about 2.1 billion USD) from taxes from alcohol sales each year, but spends 65 trillion VND (2.6 billion USD) on healthcare expenses and other consequences caused by drunk drinking.

NA deputy Pham Khanh Phong Lan from HCM City said punishments on drunk drivers should be extended to stricter punishments like forcing violators to do community service, increasing the cost of their vehicle insurance, or even temporary detention of drivers in extremely dangerous cases or in cases of repeated violations.

The blood alcohol levels of suspected drink-drivers must be tested to ensure equal punishments in each case, deputy Nguyen Thi Phuc from Binh Thuan province said.

Deputies proposed the NA issue a resolution on drunk-driving punishments, adding that solutions to improve public awareness and public campaigns to condemn drunk drivers must be used as well as laws.

Lawmakers also expressed concern over how alcohol advertising affects young people.

Deputy Pham Thi Minh Hien from Phu Yen province pointed out that alcohol consumption can lead to criminal actions.

“Anyone can become victims of alcohol, or even commit crimes if alcohol’s impacts are not controlled,” she said, raising fears that alcoholic drinks will become even more popular among young people if nothing is done to curb advertising and sales.

Several alcoholic drinks are advertised as soft drinks or fermented juice, Hien claimed, without giving any examples.

Hien proposed limiting the number of children exposed to alcohol advertisements and controlling advertisement content to ensure children are not encouraged to drink.

A change to the draft regulation regarding online alcohol sales also caused controversy.

A previous iteration of the draft proposed banning sales of alcohol stronger than 15 percent online, however the version discussed yesterday did away with this limitation and would allow sales of all kinds of booze online. Internet alcohol sales are currently largely unregulated.

Deputy Pham Trong Nhan from Binh Duong province said the regulation would pave the way for more young people to buy drinks online, especially as more and more young people have access to the internet.

Other deputies noted that law enforcement is important but must ensure public health and the benefits of alcohol producers and sellers.

According to the World Health Organisation, Vietnam’s beer consumption amounts to billions of litres per year

Yeah1 stock nosedives following YouTube partnership termination

Advertisements

YouTube had officially terminated its Content Hosting Agreement with the local corporation and all its multichannel network subsidiaries, the local media reported.

Yeah1 sent a statement to the Hochiminh Stock Exchange in the morning to confirm the partnership termination with YouTube. According to Chairman Nguyen Anh Nhuong Tong, the content storage agreement between the two sides has ended, so YouTube started releasing channels cooperating with it and its subsidiaries from May 22.

At present, Yeah1 is adjusting its resources to focus on developing content and its own channels. However, the business results of the multichannel segment will be taken into account in the company’s financial report for the first quarter of 2019, according to the statement.

Earlier, YouTube decided to terminate its CHSA with the subsidiaries and associates of Yeah1 on March 31, including ScaleLab LLC and Thailand-based SpringMe Ptd Ltd.

YouTube noted that SpringMe, in which Yeah1 has a 16.5% stake, had violated YouTube’s policies on selecting and managing channels and videos, leading the platform to terminate its agreement with Yeah1’s subsidiaries and associates that run Adsense-based business activities.

On April 2, YouTube allowed the firm to keep storing content on its platform for another two weeks while negotiations between the two sides continued. However, the Vietnamese digital media company was unable to convince YouTube not to cancel its license.

CHSA is the license through which media companies gather earnings from third-party businesses that run ads on their channels.

In addition, Yeah1, in its statement, confirmed that it had completed procedures for the buyback of over 3.1 million shares, as announced on March 18. It is now waiting for approval from the State Securities Commission.

The group said it would not stop investing in and producing network content with YouTube as it is an important channel.

Aside from operating a multichannel network on YouTube, Yeah1 owns four nationwide TV channels and operates as a movie producer and distributor, advertising agent and digital advertisement publisher.

After the trouble with YouTube, Yeah1’s shares, under the code YEG, plunged to floor prices for 13 consecutive sessions, with its market capitalization vaporizing by nearly VND6.4 trillion by March 20. The firm debuted on the southern market in June 2018 at the starting price of VND250,000.

Closing today’s session, YEG again tumbled to the floor price at VND100,500, after advancing for five sessions in a row

E-sports are a rising star of entertainment industry

Advertisements

With the number of players forecast to reach 26 million in 2019, electronic sports (e-sports) are a rising star of the Vietnamese and global entertainment industry.

11 PM is time for bed for most people, but it is when Dung CT, one of the most popular game streamers in Vietnam, gets down to work to live stream.

Starting only about two years ago, the two YouTube channels – Truc tiep game and Streamer Dung CT – lured in millions of viewers, and Streamer Dung CT received the YouTube gold play button for getting a million subscribers. Each of his 11PM streams have an average of 15,000 viewers.

Before the fame, Dung CT was just a normal streamer without any special aptitude for gaming. He prefers to play less well-known video games like The Wolf Among Us and We Happy Few instead of the more popular League of Legends and Counter-Strike. At first, he was quite shy and restricted interactions with viewers down to the minimum, but viewers were attracted by his sense of humour and the mystery as Dung CT has yet to reveal his face to the public.

Thanks to his large follower base, Dung CT made bank through his YouTube channels and fan donations. One fan even donated VND50 million ($2,173) so that Dung CT would add him on Facebook, while another gave him VND50 million ($2,173) of “lucky money” on the Lunar New Year just for the opportunity to talk with Dung CT live on his stream.

Furthermore, he made massive earning by opening a restaurant and shops selling gaming gear and accessories.

Dung CT is not the only Vietnamese streamer: the industry is teeming with popular names including QTV, ViruSs, Archie, Optimus, Trau, and Snake Nidalee of League of Legends, and PewPew of DOTA 2. Some of these streamers have already retired after a few successful years of earning tens of thousands of dollars a month from streaming.

A billion-dollar industry

Appota Corporation, a developer and provider of creative platforms for Vietnam’s digital entertainment industry, estimated that the number of e-sport players in Vietnam was more than 15 million in 2018, which may rise to about 26 million this year.

This provides an amazing base of viewers and players for a thriving e-sports ecosystem. They are part of the country’s community of over 32.8 million gamers, one of the major driving forces for the success of several gaming-focused startups like Garena, VTC, Appota, and Sohagame.

The local gaming industry has amazing potential for growth, especially when it comes to e-sports. According to Newzoo, a global provider of games and esports analytics, Vietnam has climbed from 35th in 2015 to 28th in 2017 among the world’s largest gaming markets, with the estimated annual revenue exceeding $365 million.

The local e-sports market is dominated by Vietnamese game developer Garena, which entered the market in 2009 with games like League of Legends (2012), FIFA Online 3 (2013), Arena of Valor (2016), and Blade & Soul (2017). It is followed by Vietnamese startup unicorn VNG with Vo Lam Truyen Ky, CrossFire Legends Mobile, Mobile Legend, and Rules of Survival, and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds.

The Vietnamese e-sports market in 2019 will also see new games like Survival Heroes and Glory Arena, with e-sports on mobile platforms expected to climb to the top.

Tournaments

In addition to domestic tournaments, in 2018 Vietnam achieved great results at international tourneys. The Vietnamese team won the bronze at the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 in the games Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Clash Royale, which won the third place in the Arena of Valor International Championship 2018, while receiving the $20,000 second prize at the PUBG SEA Championship 2018.

Most recently, Appota eSports under Appota Corporation entered into a collaboration with the world’s largest e-sports company Esport League (ESL) to take gamers to overseas competitions.

Appota chief marketing officer Dang Thai Son said, “E-sports will surpass football to become the king of sports in China within the next few years. The Chinese e-sports industry has been developing rapidly and is far ahead of Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. This is the foundation behind the investment wave from China and the reason why we are looking to take Vietnamese teams to international competitions.”

These moves highlight how the Vietnamese gaming and e-sports scenes are transforming and becoming more professional. This can also be seen in the emergence of e-sports tournaments that draw in not only more teams and a larger audience but feature larger and larger prize pools.

According to Appota eSports’ Vietnam eSports Guidebook 2019, the total value of e-sport tournament prize pools in Vietnam increased drastically during 2015-2018, hitting over $787,000 last year from $685,000 in 2017 and $390,000 in 2016.

“This is a clear indicator of how much money brands and game publishers are willing to invest into Vietnam’s e-sports economy. The strong growth in prize pools is largely due to the increased size of the audience that attracts brands to sponsor tournaments,” said Dao Quang Tuan, director of entertainment and sport of VTC Mobile.

“Now sponsorships for e-sports tournaments more often than not fully cover the costs of organisation, which could kick up to millions of dollars. Tournament organisers can turn a tidy profit on ticket sales, advertising, and broadcasting fees. The Vietnamese e-sports market is at a stage of rapid growth, benefiting all parties involved,” Tuan told VIR.

Moreover, with a total of 51 million 3G and 4G subscribers in Vietnam, and around 32.8 million gamers, mobile gaming is also a big deal. The number of downloads of e-sports mobile games in the first half of 2018 was almost triple that of the second half of 2016, growing from 12.8 million to 37.5 million, while the total revenue increased from $1 million to $6 million.

This tremendous market size and follower base has carved out Vietnam’s spot in the international gaming arena, with more international tournaments recognising the country as a regional powerhouse.

This is also a reason why Vietnam is now an up-and-coming destination for hosting major international tournaments such as the play-in and group stage of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational and the Arena of Valor World Cup.

Barriers

A more proactive approach by Vietnamese legislators could accelerate the growth of the domestic gaming and e-sports industry. Policymakers could rely on the experiences of the established South Korean gaming industry and of Malaysia where the government has already shown great initiative.

For now, in Vietnam, the sector lacks support from the government and an appropriate legal framework. At present, Vietnam has its Vietnam Recreational e-Sports Association, which is a member of the International e-Sports Federation. However, the association only organises a handful of programmes and tournaments due to a lack of funding and support from the government as well as incomplete regulations.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, which has always been the beating heart of e-sports, the government established the Korea e-Sports Association (KeSPA) in 2000 as the first move of its plan to build a national broadband network for faster Internet connection. KeSPA was established as a branch under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

With the foundation of KeSPA, the South Korean government officially acknowledged e-sports. Due to this timely attention, e-sports now bring millions of dollars in revenue to the country. Meanwhile in Malaysia, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has invested $2 million to develop the e-sports sector. In addition, the Philippines has recognised e-sport players as athletes and e-sports were added to the events at Sea Games 2019 organised in this country.

“Government support is a key factor for the success of e-sports in Vietnam, contributing to the state budget,” said Son of Appota.

What are the most valuable brands in the world?

Advertisements

In this article, we collected the current information on the most valuable global brands as of December 31, 2018.

We should note that the concept of the brand is much narrower than that of a company; a company may possess several brands, for example: Google is a brand, and Alphabet is the company owning that brand.

So, let’s get started

1. Apple

• Brand value: $214.48 billion
• Annual revenue: $229.23 billion
• Average company salary: $121,000
• 5-year stock price change: +225.6 percent

In this year’s Interbrand ranking, Apple is far and away the leader, with brand value of $214.48 billion. Multiple brands have thrived in recent years by offering more luxury products. Apple, which is able to price its phones at nearly $1,000 and still sell millions every month, continues to dominate the premium end of the smartphone and technology markets.

2. Google

• Brand value: $155.50 billion
• Annual revenue: $110.86 billion
• Average company salary: $113,000
• 5-year stock price change: +128.6 percent

While Google trails Apple in brand value, the tech giant’s reach and impact on society is unrivaled. With little resistance from regulators, Google has over the years approached monopoly status in multiple markets. The world’s biggest video platform, YouTube, the world’s most widely adopted smartphone software, Android, and one of the world’s largest distributors of advertising, DoubleClick, are all owned by Google — to name just a few.

3. Amazon

• Brand value: $100.76 billion
• Annual revenue: $177.87 billion
• Average company salary: $100,000
• 5-year stock price change: +486.0 percent

Amazon is one of the world’s most valuable brands and also this year’s fastest growing, with brand value growth of 56 percent. According to Interbrand, in an increasingly service-driven economy, the top-performing brands continue to be those offering the best access to products and services. No company has adopted this approach more successfully or widely than Amazon.

4. Microsoft

• Brand value: $92.72 billion
• Annual revenue: $89.95 billion
• Average company salary: $117,000
• 5-year stock price change: +227.6 percent

U.S. giants dominate every corner of the tech sector, and each still has its niche. While Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon are the respective leaders in phones, search, social, and retail, Microsoft is the leader in software. The company, founded in 1975, is visible worldwide through its MSN brand and Windows operating system. Some estimates put the number of PCs with Windows at over 1 billion.

5. Coca-Cola

• Brand value: $66.34 billion
• Annual revenue: $35.41 billion
• Average company salary: $75,000
• 5-year stock price change: +23.4 percent

Coca-Cola is today one of the most popular beverages on the planet. According to its latest annual report, of the 60 billion servings of beverages consumed worldwide every day, Coca-Cola-owned brands accounted for about 2 billion.

6. Samsung

• Brand value: $59.89 billion
• Annual revenue: $211.40 billion
• Average company salary: $92,000
• 5-year stock price change: N/A

After Apple introduced its iPhone back in 2007, it appeared the company would come to completely dominate the phone market. But Korean company Samsung pushed back, and thanks to the success of products like the Galaxy phones, Samsung is actually now the global leader in smartphone sales as of the first quarter of 2018.

7. Toyota

• Brand value: $53.40 billion
• Annual revenue: $258.24 billion
• Average company salary: $92,000
• 5-year stock price change: -4.4 percent

Toyota is one of the largest and most successful automakers in the world, selling over 10 million vehicles each year. In the United States, the Japanese company has been able to rely on the popularity of long-running brands like the Camry and the Corolla.

8. Mercedes-Benz

• Brand value: $48.60 billion
• Annual revenue: $188.89 billion
• Average company salary: $71,000.
• 5-year stock price change: -4.22 percent

Mercedes Emblem Auto Car Mercedes-benz Benz

The Mercedes-Benz brand has been around for over 90 years, but the company’s history goes back even further, to the earliest days of the automobile. Today, the German company is one of the most prestigious names in luxury automobiles, selling over 300,000 cars in the U.S. in 2017.

9. Facebook

• Brand value: $45.17 billion
• Annual revenue: $40.65 billion
• Average company salary: $117,000
• 5-year stock price change: +213.11 percent (Since IPO)

Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is used all over the world. At last count, the company had over 2.2 billion users, or about 30 percent of the world’s population. Facebook has continued to ensure its success by purchasing social media and messaging companies like WhatsApp and Instagram.

10. McDonald’s

• Brand value: $43.42 billion
• Annual revenue: $22.82 billion
• Average company salary: $52,000
• 5-year stock price change: +75.96 percent

McDonald’s has maintained its dominance as the world’s most popular fast food chain for decades. While it has fine-tuned its menu to adjust for changing tastes, including adding salads and other healthier foods, as well as a popular line of coffee, the company’s success comes from its brand recognition and the popularity of the same items it has had on its menu for years. McDonald’s employs over 230,000 people worldwide.
