Narrow win over Indonesia not enough to secure AFC U23 Championship berth for Vietnam

Advertisements

Vietnam’s securing their second consecutive victory in the 2020 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U23 Championship qualifiers over Indonesia in Hanoi on Sunday was not enough to guarantee the Golden Stars qualification for the final tournament.

The Vietnamese left it late to secure a 1-0 win over a tough Indonesian side with a 94th-minute goal by midfielder Trieu Viet Hung in their second Group K match at the My Dinh National Stadium.

The narrow triumph placed Vietnam second after Thailand in Group K, with Indonesia and Brunei holding the third and fourth spots, respectively.

Vietnam started the campaign by routing Brunei 6-0 on Friday, but six points after two games is not enough to guarantee them a berth in the final tournament, to take place in Thailand next year.

The last group-stage match against Thailand on Tuesday will be decisive for Vietnam, and they will have to play with their hearts and souls because only a victory would earn them the certain qualification as one of the 11 group leaders.

The 2020 AFC U-23 Championship, the fourth edition of the biennial international age-restricted football championship organized for the men’s under-23 national teams of Asia, consists of 16 teams, with Thailand qualified as hosts.

The remaining 15 teams qualified for the final tournament will be 11 group winners and four best runners-up of the ongoing qualifiers.

Should Vietnam fail to beat Thailand to qualify as Group K leaders, they will have to earn at least a draw to be able to advance as one of the best second-placed finishers.

In the worst-case scenario that Vietnam lose to Thailand, the Golden Stars’ current low goal difference will make them inferior to other second-placed teams.

The current top four runners-up in 11 groups have the minimum goal difference of eight, compared to seven of Vietnam.

Democratic Party of Korea Chairman heads Vietnam to strengthen ties

By Park Ji-won, Koreatimes

Ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) Chairman, Rep. Lee Hae-chan, left for Vietnam, Monday, for a three-day visit centered on seeking support for President Moon Jae-in’s New Southern Policy of improving ties with Southeast Asian nations.

Before departing from Incheon International Airport, Lee told reporters he plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vietnam’s ruling party to boost political exchanges and cooperation between the two parties.

“Last December, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung visited the DPK and asked us to sign an MOU between ruling parties,” Lee said.

“Vietnam is very important for the country’s New Southern Policy. It is one of the countries with the most human and trade exchanges with the South and has a large potential among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).”

The trip followed Moon’s recent state visits to ASEAN countries such as Brunei, Malaysia and Cambodia to boost ties with them under the New Southern Policy. It aims to widen its diplomatic spectrums and reduce reliance on the neighboring countries for trade and security.

Lee is also expected to follow up on the breakdown of the second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump held in Hanoi, Vietnam last February.

Regarding the summit, he rejected the speculation that his trip was aimed at seeking a post-Hanoi breakthrough in inter-Korean relations and said, “It is aimed to boost exchanges between South Korea and Vietnam separate from inter-Korean relations.”

During the trip, Lee plans to meet with Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, he added.

He is also scheduled to visit a Samsung Electronics factory and meet with South Korean businesspeople working there to learn about their business environment and two-way trade between Seoul and Hanoi.

Vietnam has diplomatic relations with both South Korea and North Korea.

12,000 Vietnamese killed by tuberculosis each year

Vietnam is in the world’s top 30 countries and regions with high tuberculosis rates, ranking the 16th in the number of tuberculosis patients and the 13th in that of drug-resistant tuberculosis patients, Vietnam News quoted Nguyen Viet Nhung, director of the country’s National Lung Hospital on Monday

According to the report, Vietnam detects 124,000 tuberculosis cases each year, while around 12,000 people die from the disease.

“Up to 70 percent of Vietnamese people with tuberculosis are at working age. Therefore, tuberculosis is really a problem affecting the economy of each family in particular and the country in general,” Nhung said.

He said the rate of tuberculosis infection in Vietnam has fallen in recent years, mainly because the country has mastered the techniques of tuberculosis detection, diagnosis and treatment with good results.

Vietnam has set a goal of eradicating tuberculosis by 2030.

Visiting The Terrifying Train Street in Hanoi, Vietnam

Advertisements

Twice a day a speeding train passes only inches from the homes of this residential neighborhood.

The street is so narrow that all residents must ensure their bikes and precious personal belongings, as well as their roaming children, are all safely inside the house before the train passes.

It’s one of the first places the train leaving Hanoi train station and heading South to Hue, Hoi An, Danang, Nha Trang and Saigon passes through, so if you’re on that train be sure to look out for it. Just don’t stick your head out the window if you want to arrive with your head still intact.

Hanoi Train street, as I like to call it, is located between Le Duan Street and Kham Thien street in Hanoi’s old quarter.

If you’re looking to visit, it’s really important that you get your timing right. Around 3 p.m. and 7 p.m every day, a train hurtles through a series of narrow streets.

You should have your camera ready to go if your intention is to get some cool photos and videos.

Watching them sit in the middle of the tracks with their neighbors, playing checkers and drinking tea.

The train street in Hanoi is one of the most favorite place for foreign visitors to photograph and risk the life in all of Vietnam.

Speeding train passes only inches from the homes of this residential neighborhood.

The street’s residents press tight to the walls or duck into nearby doorways with a startling nonchalance and go right back to walking across or sitting on the tracks as soon as the train has passed.

Know Before You Go
The train street is located between Le Duan and Kham Tien street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The exact lane the train passes along is called Ngo 224 Le Duan.

Korean banks saw record earnings in Vietnam in 2018

Advertisements

Twelve Korean banks see brisk earnings in Vietnam in 2018, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Tuesday.

The banks’ net incomes in the region more than doubled from $61 million in 2017 to $131.8 million in 2018. Koreatimes reports.

Shinhan Bank Vietnam made the biggest contribution to the lenders’ overall growth there as it posted nearly 100 billion won ($88 million) in net profit last year.

Their combined net income in Singapore also grew by 17.2 percent in 2018; while assets also grew in Vietnam and Indonesia.

The banks’ profits from business in Vietnam grew from $5.72 billion in 2017 to $6.43 billion in 2018; and in Indonesia from 5.76 billion to $6.34 billion.

In 2018, the twelve Korean banks were operating in 39 countries through 55 subsidiaries, 77 branches and 57 offices, and most of their overseas operations, or nearly 70 percent were concentrated in Asia.

New openings were also concentrated in the region ― out of seven, four were opened in Cambodia and one in Bangladesh.

“We continue to see increasing profits in Asia,” an FSS official said. “The scale of assets in the region is not very great compared to that of other larger economies but continues to grow.”

Shinhan Bank said its stellar growth in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, was due to its well-executed strategy and services tailored to local customers.

“We believe it’s due to localization strategies, as the bank has focused securing local customers, hiring local employees and local executives, and increasing the percentage of local assets,” a Shinhan Bank official said.

The FSS assessed the banks did better in terms of localization in 2018 than a year earlier.

According to the FSS, the total asset volume of overseas businesses came to $114.25 billion, up 8.9 percent from a year earlier. The banks’ overseas businesses reported a net income of $983 million for 2018, up 22.2 percent from a year earlier. This was due to considerable increases in interest and non-interest incomes.

Meanwhile, FSS First Senior Deputy Governor Yoo Kwang-yeol is in Southeast Asia for meetings with his regulatory counterparts to discuss Korean financial companies’ businesses there.

He was in Jakarta Monday and will hold meetings in Hanoi Wednesday and Thursday.

This is the first visit by members of the FSS management in four years ― the last took place in 2015 under then governor Zhin Woong-seob.

An FSS official said “There is a lot more to discuss with our counterparts there because the presence of Korean finance companies in the region has grown significantly over the past years.”

Vietnam’s Hanoi attractions: Museum of Ethnology

This fabulous collection relating to Vietnam’s ethnic minorities features well-presented tribal art, artefacts and everyday objects gathered from across the nation, and examples of traditional village houses.

Displays are well labelled in Vietnamese, French and English. If you’re into anthropology, it’s well worth the approximately 200,000d-each-way taxi fares to the Cau Giay district, about 7km from the city centre, where the museum is located.

Local bus 14 (4000d) departs from Dinh Tien Hoang street on the east side of Hoan Kiem Lake and passes within a couple of blocks (around 600m) of the museum; get off at the Nghia Tan bus stop and head to Nguyen Van Huyen street.
