The service will be offered to existing Commerzbank corporate clients in Germany, and will start with bitcoin and ether trading.

Crypto Finance, a subsidiary of Germany’s largest stock exchange operator, signed a deal with Commerzbank (CBK) to offer trading services to the lender’s corporate clients just two weeks after reaching a similar agreement with Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) in Switzerland

Commerzbank, the country’s second-largest bank by number of branches, will provide custody services, the companies said in a press release on Thursday. The trading service offered by the Deutsche Boerse unit will be available to clients based in Germany and initially focus on trading in the two largest cryptocurrencies, bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH).

“Our offering in digital assets, enables our corporate clients to seize the opportunities presented by bitcoin and ether for for the first time,” said Gernot Kleckner, head of capital markets for corporate clients at Commerzbank. “Our joint solution represents the highest level of security in the trading and custody of crypto assets, which is also a standard we also share with the Deutsche Boerse Group.”

Commerzbank obtained a crypto custody license in Germany in November 2023, allowing the financial services firm to offer a wide range of services related to digital assets.

Ether Rebounds Off Key Support Signals Long Term Bullishness

Advertisements

Ether holds critical support level as macro factors loom over crypto market

Ether (ETH) rose 2.5% in the past 24 hours, trading at around $2,434. More importantly, the second largest cryptocurrency has found key support at its 200-week simple moving average (SMA) of $2,298.

The 200-week SMA is a widely used tool for gauging long-term momentum. If the price of an asset rises above the marker, it is generally considered to be in an uptrend, and vice versa. The move higher was triggered after the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision to cut rates by 50 basis point (bps), setting the current target rate between 4.75% and 5.00%.

Ether has bounced off this support multiple times, including on Aug. 5, when broader markets experienced a selloff triggered by the yen carry trade unwind. This support has held for much of September.

In the meantime, bitcoin (BTC) was changing hands at around $62,000 marking the first higher low for the token since its March all-time high, signaling constructive price action. Traders expect the rally to be short lived.

To push further into bullish territory, bitcoin will need to break through the $65,000 resistance level, to mark a higher high and continue the upward momentum.

Bitcoin is also attempting to reclaim the short-term holder (STH) realized price of $61,998. The realized price represents the average on-chain acquisition cost for the entire supply, while the STH realized price reflects the average cost for coins moved within the last 155 days, which are the most likely to be spent.

Over the past six months, bitcoin has struggled to remain above this level. A sustained move above the STH realized price would suggest a more robust continuation of the bull market.

Looking ahead, macroeconomic factors could further influence both bitcoin and ether’s prices. On September 20, Japan is set to release inflation data, with expectations for both headline and core inflation to come in slightly hotter year-over-year, according to Trading Economics.

Additionally, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will announce its interest rate decision, with markets expecting a pause at 0.25%. These events could add volatility to crypto markets, particularly as global monetary policy continues to influence investor sentiment across risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

While a weak Japanese Yen would be bullish for bitcoin, a strong Japanese Yen would be bearish for bitcoin. While, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) also cut its base rate by 50 bps to 5.25% on September 19, mirroring the Fed’s interest rate cut. Hong Kong’s monetary policy tends to mirror the U.S. as the local currency is pegged to the U.S. dollar.

Bitcoin ETFs experienced their first outflow since September 11, with a total outflow of $52.7 million, according to data from Farside. The outflows were from Ark’s ARKB ($43.4 million), Grayscale’s GBTC ($8.1 million), and Bitwise’s BITB ($3.9 million). Total inflows into bitcoin ETFs now stand at $17.4 billion.

As bitcoin and ethereum grapple with key technical levels, broader macroeconomic conditions, particularly in Japan and the U.S., may play a significant role in shaping price movements in the coming days.

Ethereum Is the Microsoft of Blockchains, ETH Underperformance May Reverse Into Year-End: Bitwise

Advertisements

The Ethereum blockchain has the most active developers, the highest number of active users and ether has a market cap that is five times larger than its nearest competitor, the report said.

Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, seems to be liked by nobody right now, but the native token of the Ethereum blockchain’s underperformance could reverse as the year draws to a close, Bitwise said in a report on Tuesday.

The asset manager noted that year-to-date ether is little changed, while bitcoin (BTC) is up 38% and Solana’s sol (SOL) has risen 31%.

Ether’s recent underperformance stems from risk related to November’s U.S. presidential election, rising competition from Solana and other blockchains, challenged tokenomics and a mixed response to the introduction of spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the U.S., the report said.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. The majority of stablecoins are issued on Ethereum, more than 60% of all decentralized finance (DeFi) assets are locked on the blockchain and the popular prediction market Polymarket also settles on the layer-1 chain, Bitwise noted.

“Ethereum has the most active developers, the most active users, and a market cap that is 5X bigger than its closest competitor,” wrote Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise.

“It’s like the Microsoft (MSFT) of blockchains,” Hougan wrote. Everyone wants to talk about about newer companies and their game-changing tech such as Google (GOOG), Slack (WORK) and Zoom (ZM), “but Microsoft is still larger than all of them put together.”

Ether’s challenges are not “existential” and the market may reevaluate the cryptocurrency closer to the U.S. election. “It looks like a potential contrarian bet through the end of the year,” the report said.

Donald Trump’s Group Plans Hotel, Golf, and Resort Developments in Vietnam

Advertisements

The Trump Organization is expressing interest in investing in golf courses, entertainment, and resort complexes in Hung Yen province of Vietnam.

Known for its involvement in various sectors, including hotels, real estate, golf courses, entertainment, publishing, asset management, and marketing, the group seeks to expand its operations in Vietnam. According to the Hung Yen newspaper, Nguyen Huu Nghia, Secretary of the Hung Yen Provincial Party Committee, met with senior leaders from The Trump Organization to discuss potential collaborations. The meeting, also attended by leaders from various local sectors, centered on investment opportunities in Hung Yen.

The Trump Organization’s representatives emphasized their desire to partner with the province, particularly in hotel construction, golf courses, and entertainment complexes, areas where they have significant expertise and a strong international reputation. They also requested that the province facilitate conditions that would support the group’s participation in its development efforts, aiming to strengthen diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.

Nguyen Huu Nghia outlined the province’s potential and strategic advantages, along with its long-term economic development plans, which include transforming Hung Yen into a modern hub for industry and services. He also highlighted investment projects focused on transport infrastructure aimed at enhancing regional connectivity between Hung Yen and Hanoi, and leveraging tourism and entertainment opportunities around Hanoi and the Red River Delta.

The Secretary of the Hung Yen Special Economic Zone reiterated the province’s commitment to providing a favorable legal environment for The Trump Organization to explore investment opportunities. However, he noted that many steps still need to be taken to turn this potential cooperation into reality. Local authorities will continue working closely with central agencies to ensure effective promotion of investment in the region.

Founded in 1927, The Trump Organization is a family-owned business, primarily involved in construction and real estate development, with major operations in New York. Since Donald Trump took over in 1971, the company has expanded into other sectors, including hospitality and entertainment. Following his election as U.S. President in 2016, Trump handed over the leadership of the company to his children. Today, The Trump Organization is one of the leading real estate investment firms, with numerous large-scale projects around the world.

One of its first major successes under Trump’s leadership was the renovation of the Commodore Hotel in Manhattan, which reopened as the Grand Hyatt New York in 1980. This was followed by the development of Trump Tower, which opened in 1983 and remains a landmark in New York City, housing both luxury brands and the Trump family’s offices.

Heavy Rain Causes Flooding on Multiple Roads in Ho Chi Minh City

Advertisements

Prolonged heavy rain from early morning until the afternoon led to widespread flooding on numerous roads in Ho Chi Minh City, causing challenges for commuters.

On September 18, many areas of the city, particularly in certain districts, experienced significant flooding due to the downpour.

Many roads in Go Vap District, including Le Duc Tho, Le Van Tho, Nguyen Van Khoi, and Pham Van Chieu streets, were heavily inundated. In some areas, the water level rose to more than half the height of a motorbike’s wheels, making travel through the district difficult.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sy, a 45-year-old resident of Pham Van Chieu street, shared that the rain started early in the morning and intensified by noon, leading to widespread flooding.

“Pham Van Chieu street usually floods in the afternoon due to a combination of rain and high tides. Today, I was surprised to see it flooded in the morning,” said Mr. Sy.

Similarly, roads such as Song Hanh and Nguyen Anh Thu streets in District 12 also faced flooding, causing some vehicles to stall while passing through these areas.

As of 1:30 p.m., rain continued across all districts in Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking to reporter, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of the Forecast Department at the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, explained that the tropical convergence zone extending through the Central region, coupled with a tropical depression in the Northeast Sea, has caused the Southwest monsoon to intensify.

He noted that in the coming days, Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region will continue to experience scattered showers, with moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in some areas. There is a possibility of very heavy rain in localized regions.

In the next 2-3 days, the tropical convergence zone will shift west-northwest, with the potential to make landfall in Central Vietnam. The Southwest monsoon is expected to gradually weaken around September 20.

Residents in low-lying, riverside, and urban areas should remain cautious, as localized flooding is likely due to the persistent heavy rainfall.

Tropical Depression Expected to Strengthen into Storm No. 4, Approaching Quang Binh and Quang Tri

Advertisements

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as of 7:00 a.m. this morning, the tropical depression was centered about 220 km east of the Hoang Sa archipelago. The maximum sustained winds near the center were measured at level 7 (50-61 km/h), with gusts reaching level 9. The system is moving westward at approximately 15 km/h.

Storm No. 4 is Imminent

Over the next 24 hours, the tropical depression is expected to strengthen into Storm No. 4, with winds intensifying to level 8 (62-74 km/h), and gusts reaching level 10. By 7:00 a.m. on September 19, the storm will be about 210 km east-southeast of Quang Tri and 120 km east of Da Nang.

The storm is projected to make landfall in the Quang Binh – Quang Tri region, then weaken back into a tropical depression as it moves inland.

Tropical Depression to Weaken Over Land

By 7:00 a.m. on September 20, the weakened system will be positioned near the Vietnam-Laos border, with winds reduced to level 6 (39-49 km/h) and gusts at level 8. In the following 48 to 72 hours, the tropical depression will continue moving west-northwest at a speed of 10-15 km/h, eventually weakening into a low-pressure system.

Marine and Coastal Areas at Risk

Due to the influence of this storm, strong winds (level 6-7) and high waves (2-4 meters) are expected across the northern East Sea, including the Hoang Sa archipelago, and coastal waters from Nghe An to Quang Ngai, which includes the island districts of Ly Son, Cu Lao Cham, Con Co, and Hon Ngu. Near the storm’s center, winds could reach level 8 with gusts up to level 10, generating waves as high as 5 meters.

Marine vessels in these areas are at risk of encountering storms, strong winds, and large waves. Coastal provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Nam should prepare for the possibility of high tides combined with strong waves, which could lead to coastal erosion, dike breaches, and flooding in low-lying areas.

Preparing for the Storm’s Impact

From the early morning of September 19, mainland coastal areas from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai will experience strengthening winds, reaching level 6-7. Near the storm’s center, winds may reach level 8 with gusts up to level 10. Inland areas may also experience gusts of level 6-7.

Residents in affected areas are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

McDonald’s has announced the closure of its Ben Thanh branch in Ho Chi Minh City, effective September 19. This location, situated at 2-2A Tran Hung Dao, District 1, was one of the first McDonald’s outlets in Vietnam.

In a post on its official Facebook page, McDonald’s shared, “Although we don’t want to say goodbye, at 2:00 a.m. on September 19, McDonald’s Ben Thanh will close its 10-year journey.” The branch, which opened in May 2014, had become a familiar spot for locals, and news of its closure has drawn expressions of regret from many.

Occupying a prime location at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao and Pham Ngu Lao streets, close to Ben Thanh Market and 23/9 Park, the three-story, 660-square-meter restaurant was open 24/7. It was also the first in Vietnam to feature a custom food conveyor system, transporting meals from the kitchen on the third floor to the ground floor in just 15 seconds.

McDonald’s entered the Vietnamese market in February 2014, with its first branch at 2-6 Bis Dien Bien Phu, District 1. At the time, the company aimed to open 100 stores within 10 years. However, a decade later, the chain has only reached a little over one-third of that goal, operating 36 locations in major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Binh Duong, Khanh Hoa, and Hai Phong.

McDonald’s is not the only global brand scaling back operations in Vietnam. Starbucks recently closed its Reserve store at 11-13 Han Thuyen, District 1, on August 26, with plans to relocate. Real estate brokers are now seeking tenants for the 210-square-meter property, offering it for lease at $30,000 per month (over 750 million VND).

For the first time, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust has directly acquired shares in a Vietnamese company. The trust, managed by billionaire Bill Gates, now holds over 1 million shares of Masan Consumer (MCH), representing more than 0.14% of the company’s capital.

Recently, Masan Consumer announced the results of a vote regarding additional dividend payments for 2023. A remarkable 97.3% of shareholders approved the plan to pay a cash dividend of 168%, equivalent to VND 16,800 per share.

Among the shareholders, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust stands out, currently holding over 1.04 million shares, valued at approximately VND 212 billion. This makes the trust the 11th largest shareholder in the company. With the new dividend plan, the trust is expected to receive nearly VND 17.5 billion, adding to the VND 10.4 billion already received from previous dividend payments in 2023, bringing the total to nearly VND 28 billion.

Historically, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust has indirectly invested in Vietnam through the Vietnam Enterprise Investments Limited (VEIL) fund, which is managed by Dragon Capital. By mid-2023, the trust was the second-largest shareholder in VEIL, with nearly 24.7 million fund certificates. However, the trust had never held direct shares in a Vietnamese company before now.

Interestingly, despite its increasing presence in Vietnam, the trust has reduced its exposure to global technology giants. In the fourth quarter of 2023, it sold off its shares in major tech companies like Apple, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Nvidia, as well as other prominent names such as Walt Disney, Morgan Stanley, Johnson & Johnson, and Unilever.

Masan Consumer, known for its robust growth, is set to distribute an additional VND 12,000 billion in dividends this year. This move comes ahead of the company’s expected transfer from UPCoM to HoSE in early 2024. The company’s strong financial performance, with a record profit of VND 7,195 billion in 2023, has enabled these significant payouts.

In the first half of 2024, Masan Consumer recorded VND 13,968 billion in revenue, an increase of 11.6%, with a gross profit margin of 46.5%. Pre-tax profit reached VND 3,923 billion, while after-tax profit amounted to VND 3,458 billion, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 14.6% and 13.4%, respectively.

Masan Consumer has ambitious goals for 2024, targeting net revenue of VND 31,500 to 34,500 billion and after-tax profit of VND 7,300 to 7,500 billion. By mid-year, the company had achieved over 40% of its revenue goal and nearly 47% of its profit target.

CEO Truong Cong Thang highlighted the company’s strategy to dominate both domestic and global markets by growing its six billion-dollar brands and expanding its product portfolio to cater to consumers both at home and abroad. Key brands like Kokomi, Omachi, Chinsu, Nam Ngu, and Wakeup 24/7, which contribute significantly to Masan Group’s overall revenue, are expected to play pivotal roles in this growth.

Since the beginning of 2024, MCH shares have more than doubled in value, now exceeding VND 200,000 per share, giving Masan Consumer a market capitalization of approximately VND 147,600 billion (USD 5.9 billion).
