Two Vietnamese destinations among top 10 cheapest cities in Asia

Advertisements

Kayak, a U.S.-based travel search engine owned by Booking, has just released a list of the 10 cheapest cities in Asia for tourists, which includes two cities from Vietnam.

To save more when traveling to Asian destinations, Kayak experts recommend that tourists “plan their trips for this fall travel season (October – November) and save up to 12% on flights compared to the peak travel season (May – July).”

Based on this, Kayak has provided data on which destinations in Asia have the lowest travel costs. To compile the list of the 10 most affordable cities in Asia, they reviewed searches from January to June 2024 for travel to Asia from June to December 2024. The site combined the average economy round-trip airfare with the average cost of a standard double hotel room per night to determine the 10 cheapest Asian cities for tourists to visit right now.

With an average total cost of $1,452, Ho Chi Minh City is the second cheapest travel city, after Taipei.

Currently, Vietnam Airlines offers direct flights from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City at a great value. The cost of booking this flight directly with Vietnam Airlines starts at just $660 round-trip, and it is one of the few direct flights from Southeast Asia to North America. Besides affordable flights, food and accommodations are also quite inexpensive. Kayak experts also emphasized that Vietnam is the “lowest-cost travel destination” in Southeast Asia.

The third cheapest city in Asia is Jakarta, Indonesia, with $1,478; followed by New Delhi, India, $1,490; Bangkok, Thailand, $1,493; Manila, Philippines, $1,495; Tokyo, Japan, $1,499; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, $1,505.

With a total trip cost of $1,546, Hanoi is the 9th cheapest city on the list, above Osaka, Japan.

Vietnam is one of the two countries with two appearances on this list, which is not surprising to those familiar with traveling in Asian countries.

Hanoi in autumn

“Visiting Vietnam means experiencing a country with delicious, cheap food, high-value hotels, and convenient transportation. Accommodations, from budget to luxury, are much cheaper than in surrounding countries. Domestic business class flights in Vietnam offer great value and make the experience at the country’s crowded airports much more enjoyable; even economy flights are much cheaper than similar routes in the U.S.,” said Ethan Crowley, a Kayak expert, adding that “street food in Vietnam is among the cheapest in the region.”

Bitcoin Miner Riot Platforms’ Second-Quarter Loss Widens to $84.4M as Costs Surge

Advertisements

The company’s loss per share doubled to $0.32.

Bitcoin (BTC) mining firm Riot Platforms (RIOT) said its second-quarter loss trebled from the year before as general running costs climbed 48%.

The Castle Rock, Colo.-based company posted a net loss of $84.4 million, or $0.32 per share. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose to $61.2 million. More than half the figure, $32.1 million, comprised stock compensation expenses related to new grants under a long-term incentive program. The net loss for the quarter also included a $76.4 million drop in the fair value of bitcoin it holds.

April’s Bitcoin halving, which cuts the reward miners receive for adding new blocks to the blockchain by 50%, reduced the number of bitcoin Riot produced during the quarter. The company mined 844 BTC, 52% less than in the previous second quarter.

The cost to mine the bitcoin jumped to $25,327 from $5,734 due to a 68% increase in the network’s hashrate. Hashrate is a measurement of the total computational power used to process transactions on the network. A higher hashrate means miners need to dispatch more power, incurring higher costs, in order to produce each BTC.

RIOT shares fell 0.3% in pre-market trading as of 09:35 UTC on Thursday. Bitcoin has dropped 2.7% in the past 24 hours, while the CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), a measure of the broader crypto market, has lost 4.5%.

Taking the Leap of Faith: Building Trust in Your Equipment and Yourself as an Aerialist

Advertisements

Flying through the air with elegance and grace – that’s the dream that fascinates aspiring aerialists. But before you can express your inner cirque performer, a crucial foundation needs to be laid: trust. Trust in your equipment, the very tools that allow you to defy gravity, and trust in yourself, the one pushing your limits and embracing the unknown. This article will be your guide on building that trust, empowering you to take flight with confidence.

The Importance of Trust: A Two-Way Street

Aerial arts can be intimidating. You’re suspended in mid-air, relying on silks, straps, or hoops to hold you safe. Without trust, every climb, inversion, or drop becomes an act of sheer terror, hindering your progress and enjoyment. Here’s why a two-pronged approach – trusting your equipment and trusting yourself – is paramount:

Safety First

Aerial equipment, when properly inspected and maintained, is incredibly strong and reliable. Trusting its integrity allows you to focus on mastering techniques rather than worrying about a potential failure. This mental freedom fosters a safe and enjoyable learning environment.

Pushing Boundaries

With trust comes confidence. As you believe in the security of your equipment, you’ll be more willing to attempt new moves and explore the full potential of your chosen aerial discipline. This is where the magic happens – where artistry and athleticism converge.

Building Self-Belief

Overcoming your fears and doubts is a core part of aerial arts. Trusting yourself – your strength, coordination, and ability to learn – empowers you to push past limitations and celebrate your achievements. This self-belief translates into a captivating stage presence and a deeper connection with the art form.

Building Trust in Your Equipment: A Step-by-Step Guide

Now that we understand the significance of trust, let’s delve into how to build it with your aerial equipment:

Find a Reputable Studio/Gym

Enroll in a facility that prioritizes safety. Look for studios with certified instructors, equipment that undergoes regular inspections, and a strong focus on proper rigging techniques.

Understand Your Equipment

Familiarize yourself with the specific type of aerial apparatus you’ll be using. Learn about its weight capacity, proper setup procedures, and any potential vulnerabilities. This knowledge empowers informed decision-making.

Inspect Before Every Use

Develop a pre-flight routine. This includes visually inspecting your equipment for signs of wear and tear, checking carabiners for proper closure, and ensuring all connections are secure.

Choose Certified Equipment

For ultimate peace of mind, invest in equipment that meets the highest safety standards. Look for brands that prioritize rigorous testing and certification processes. Here at Vertical Wise, we offer a wide range of certified aerial equipment, ensuring you can train with complete confidence.

Ask Questions

Don’t hesitate to ask your instructors about anything that concerns you. A good teacher will be happy to address your questions and alleviate any anxieties.

Building Trust in Yourself: Conquering Your Fears

Trusting yourself is an ongoing journey. Here are some tips to cultivate that inner aerialist who thrives on challenges:

  • Start Small and Celebrate Milestones: Begin with basic techniques and gradually progress. Celebrate each accomplishment, no matter how seemingly insignificant. This reinforces your capabilities and builds momentum.
  • Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Aerial arts require dedication and practice. There will be setbacks and moments of frustration. Focus on the progress you’re making, not achieving flawless execution overnight.
  • Embrace the Community: Connect with other aerialists. Share your experiences, both successes and struggles. The support and encouragement of a like-minded community can be a powerful motivator.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pushing your limits is important, but so is respecting them. Learn to recognize your body’s signals and take breaks when needed. This will prevent injuries and foster a sustainable aerial practice.

Conclusion: Taking Flight with Confidence

Building trust in your equipment and yourself is a transformative process in your aerial journey. With a foundation of trust, you’ll not only be safer but also experience a newfound sense of freedom and accomplishment. Embrace the challenges, celebrate your victories, and remember, the most breathtaking aerial performances begin with a single, trusting leap.

Nearly 150 People Poisoned by Japanese Eel Rice; One Fatality Reported

Advertisements

The incident originated from grilled eel prepared by the Nihonbashi Unagi Isesada restaurant chain and sold at the Keikyu department store in Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city.

On the morning of July 25, local health authorities received the first reports of two individuals experiencing food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Medical experts traced the cause to boxed lunches and grilled eels sold at the Keikyu department store.

Tests revealed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, commonly found on human skin and capable of producing toxins that cause acute digestive symptoms.

So far, at least 147 people, including children under 10 and elderly individuals over 90, have shown signs of poisoning after consuming the grilled eel. Most cases exhibited mild symptoms, but two people required hospitalization.

Tragically, a 90-year-old woman died after eating the grilled eel. Medical experts stated that her death was primarily due to an underlying illness, not solely food poisoning.

Grilled eel (unagi) is a popular Japanese dish, especially in the summer. This serious food poisoning incident has shocked the Japanese public.

Initial reports indicate that Isesada restaurant sold over 1,700 boxed lunches and grilled eels on July 24 and 25. Alarmingly, at least 450 of these products had incorrect expiration dates and lacked allergen information, posing further health risks.

The investigation also uncovered serious violations in food handling procedures. Specifically, five employees prepared eel without wearing gloves, violating food safety regulations.

In response to the incident, the restaurant recalled all affected products and issued a public apology. At a joint press conference on July 29, representatives of Isesada and Keikyu department stores pledged to investigate and thoroughly determine the cause of the incident.

MSB Achieves Nearly VND 3,700 Billion Pre-Tax Profit in First Half of 2024

Advertisements

Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MSB) has reported stable growth in profit and total operating income for the first six months of 2024.

The bank’s consolidated pre-tax profit reached nearly VND 3,690 billion, marking a 4% increase compared to the same period last year and achieving 54% of the annual profit target. MSB’s individual credit growth was 12.41%, maintaining the upward trend from the previous quarter and ranking among the top in the industry. Customer loans exceeded VND 166,000 billion, driven by diverse and flexible loan products and the bank’s advanced digitalization efforts.

As of June 30, MSB’s total assets were over VND 295,500 billion, up 10.69% from the end of 2023. This growth was supported significantly by a more than 40% increase in investment securities, which amounted to over VND 53,100 billion, with about 66% derived from government bond investments.

Customer deposits and valuable papers increased by 15% and 64% respectively compared to the end of 2023, strengthening the balance sheet. Non-term deposits reached over VND 40,500 billion, a 15.4% increase from the end of last year, stabilizing at VND 40,300 billion in the first quarter.

At the end of the first six months, the CASA ratio in the total mobilized capital structure was 26.71%, slightly down from the previous quarter but still among the highest in the market, mainly due to an increase in term deposits.

MSB’s consolidated total net income (TOI) reached VND 7,031 billion, a 10% increase over the same period in 2023. Net interest income remained the primary contributor at over VND 4,700 billion. The bank’s net profit from foreign exchange trading activities more than doubled compared to the same period in 2023, raising the contribution of non-interest income to over 33.05% of total operating income. This improvement reflects the bank’s efforts to balance operations for sustainable growth.

The positive income growth allowed the bank to reduce its cost-income ratio (CIR) to 30.9%, down from 39.3% at the end of 2023 and 33.6% in the first quarter.

In terms of liquidity and capital, MSB maintained a well-managed capital base. The loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) was 72.57%, and the ratio of short-term capital for medium- and long-term loans (MTLT) was controlled at 26.1%. The bank’s consolidated capital adequacy ratio (CAR) was 12.

How Online Reputation Management Enhances Brand’s Digital Growth

How Online Reputation Management Enhances Brand’s Digital Growth

Businesses cannot work on prolonging their digital presence and relevance in today’s digital world without practicing managing their online reputation. Thousands of things and rumors spread daily in consumers’ eyes. Brands ensure their name and image aren’t dragged in the mud and harming their brand’s integrity.

That’s where online reputation management comes in. Brands handle various things, such as their site’s review and feedback page and regularly posting PR campaigns. Brands usually become victims of false rumors or false interpretations. This may usually come from competitors or simply malicious actors who harm brands’ image and integrity in the digital space, and that’s where businesses adopt various measures to handle them effectively. Before visiting a business, 90% of consumers check online reviews.

Online Reputation Management | How To Do Them Effectively

Any brand looking to sustain itself in the digital space must adopt some basic measures for effortless online reputation management

1. Take a Quick Eye at Your Online Reputation

Before pounding on strategizing strategies, having a clear overview of how your brand is piercing your target audience is crucial. This will help brands understand and plan on which targets they can handle instantly and which actions need patience and adjustments. Businesses begin their journey by auditing their brand’s complete digital presence.

The idea is for businesses to see how their brands are being viewed by their public online audience. They can do that by simply typing their brand name into the Google search bar. This helps them see how their brand name is appearing on search engine results and how well their search engine marketing measures are working. If businesses are in the consumer market, examining their Google Business Profile is crucial to analyzing customer responses, such as reviews, store ratings, and comments. This helps them ensure how to craft future Pay-Per-Click (PPC) services and advertising measures.

This practice allows them to see how their brand appeals on their social media platforms, online communities, and review sites.

2. Plan a Crisis Management Strategy for Reputation Management

Crises are not always promised to never come in the future. That’s why businesses need to be ready in all their domains to collectively paint a better image of their digital presence.

Businesses create strategies to manage their relations with existing customers and develop strategies to manage their public image and social media mentions simultaneously. Some of the things that companies need to be prepared for:

  • Utilize media monitoring software to get an instant signal whenever some negative talk or a brand’s name is taken in a lousy light.
  • Stay updated with industry trends. This helps them keep up with cultural changes, environmental movements, and technological advancements to take control of their business.
  • Plan responses to instantly reach negative comments and feedback. This will help them mitigate bad influences and handle the situation quickly. Facebook advertising also plays an integral part in this domain.

3. Always Focus on Getting Reviews for Reputation Management

Businesses must encourage customers to give valuable feedback and tell them their feelings about their products and services. This helps them rank their stores on search engine platforms like Google and enhances their Google Business Profile (GMB). When businesses open or search their stores, their high ratings and positive reviews encourage customers to take their site and presence seriously which leads them to buy from their stores and ultimately increases their Return On Investment (ROI).

Businesses can send pop-up banners like review links after their customers’ purchases or give incentives to existing customers who have yet to leave reviews on their sites.

What Components Constitute Online Reputation Management

  • Social media

Social media marketing has always been the first place to settle false interpretations and handle negative images of a brand. Social media caters to more than a billion online users every day, making them effective in every realm of brand development, whether related to bashing some brand’s customer service or sharing their positive and pleasant experience with the brand.

  • Third-Party Sites

Third-party platforms like review sites are a primary factor in better online reputation management. Positive reviews and better ratings on one brand on review sites follow them everywhere and make them a priority for their customers. Reviews make or break any brand’s digital presence. Popular review sites like Yelp, Trustpilot, and Angi are one of the main platforms that consumers go to and give feedback about them.

  • Influencers

Influencers and bloggers are among the major factors influencing trust in Gen Z and other audience segments. Users are more likely to trust influencers’ authenticity than branded content and advertisements. Influencers create and promote content by endorsing a brand’s name and sharing their positive experiences on their profiles.

Wrapping Up

Online reputation management is the way to go for businesses in the future. With brands’ overall presence relying on digital presence and image, businesses cannot afford to let false rumors and misinterpretations ruin their image. By managing reviews and combating negative experiences, brands can amplify their digital growth and revenue.

Ether ETFs Break Four-Day Outflow Streak, Bitcoin ETFs Record $18M Outflows

Advertisements

The crypto Trump trade appears to be softening.

U.S.-listed spot bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded outflows while ether (ETH) ETFs recorded inflows after a four-day losing streak on Tuesday as prices pared gains from last week’s run-up to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s speech.

Spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $18 million in net outflows, breaking a four-day streak that saw inflows as high as $124 million.

SoSoValue data shows that Grayscale’s IBIT led outflows at $73 million. Products from Fidelity, Ark Invest, Bitwise, and VanEck saw outflows ranging from $2 million to $7 million. Blackrock’s IBIT was the only ETF that recorded inflows of nearly $75 million.

Eher-tracked ETFs recorded net inflows at $33 million after a four-day losing streak, only the second day of net inflows since they went live on July 23.

Ether ETFs have witnessed a cumulative net outflow of over $400 million. Grayscale’s ETHE has recorded the most losses at $1.84 billion, while BlackRock’s ETHA leads inflows at $618 million.

BTC surged to over $69,000 last week as Trump took the stage at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, revealing plans to fire the U.S. SEC head Gary Gensler and create a strategic bitcoin reserve if elected.

However, the cryptocurrency lost as much as 5% on Monday as the U.S. Marshals Service shifted $2 billion worth of BTC to two new wallets, instilling fears of a looming liquidation.

Meanwhile, traders are largely cautioning of further price volatility as major U.S. technology firms are scheduled to release earnings this week – an event that tends to influence bitcoin prices.

“Election headlines will remain a major focus, but several key macroeconomic events are also on the horizon,” Singapore-based QCP Capital said in a Telegram broadcast Tuesday. “Key events starting with the FOMC meeting on Wednesday, megacap tech earnings (Apple, Amazon, Meta) throughout the week, and unemployment data on Friday.”

“We maintain a range-trading outlook for BTC,” the firm said.

Bank of England to Carry Out CBDC, Digital Ledger Experiments

Advertisements

In a new discussion paper, the U.K. central bank also said it wants to ensure stablecoins are interchangeable with the pound.

The Bank of England said it’s planning a series of experiments with distributed ledger technology (DLT) and wholesale central bank digital currencies (wCBDC) to keep abreast of changes in the payments landscape and assess the opportunities and risks of developments in financial technology.

The rise of cryptocurrencies and the DLT that underpins them has prompted central banks across the globe to see how they can interact with both. Many are working separately, together or through the Bank for International Settlements – the umbrella organization for the world’s central banks – on projects to explore the impact of developing technology on the world’s monetary systems. The BOE, for example, is part of the BIS’ Project Agora looking at testing exchanging tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank money in multiple currencies on a single platform among seven banks.

“Confidence in money and payments is fundamental to the Bank’s responsibility for monetary and financial stability,” Governor Andrew Bailey said in the introduction to a discussion paper on Tuesday. “As innovation in this space continues, our role must also evolve, to support a robust and dynamic U.K. economy.”

One way that central bank money can interact with distributed ledger platforms is so-called synchronization, the report said. That’s when an asset is transferred from one platform to another – possibly including one based on DLT – with the cash leg of the transaction on the bank’s Real Time Gross Settlement ledger.

Wholesale CBDCs, digital tokens issued by central banks that are used only by institutions, could help interactions with programmable platforms, the discussion paper noted.

“Our programme of experiments would be grounded in a set of policy outcomes which we seek from innovations in wholesale central bank money,” the bank said in the paper. “The programme would cover both wCBDC and synchronisation, as well as the relative merits of these two approaches.”

The bank said it will work with the Treasury, Payments Systems Regulator and the Financial Conduct Authority to also ensure the singleness of money is maintained even when stablecoins are involved. That is, making sure all forms of money – cash, bank deposits and so on – are interchangeable with each other.

In the discussion paper, the bank said it will carry out a series of experiments to ensure that the singleness of money is maintained between stablecoins and tokenized deposits, which are deposit claims represented on programmable platforms.

These free water dispensing points have been put into operation with the aim of encouraging residents and tourists to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles, always carry personal water containers to refill, reduce plastic waste and pollution, conserve resources, and move towards sustainable development in Hue city.

Currently, Hue city is implementing various solutions to minimize plastic waste in its tourism activities. Earlier, in August 2023, the project “Hue – Plastic Reduction Urban Area in Central Vietnam” in collaboration with the Hue Monuments Conservation Center launched three rest stations and water dispensers at the tombs of Kings Gia Long, Minh Mang, and Dong Khanh.

According to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, Hai Van Quan will officially open to the public on August 1st after more than two years of closure for restoration.

Specifically, the site will offer free admission until a suitable ticket pricing plan is finalized.

Located at the peak of Hai Van Pass, Hai Van Quan sits at an altitude of 496 meters above sea level, straddling the area between Lang Co town in Phu Loc district (Thua Thien Hue) and Hoa Hiep Bac ward in Lien Chieu district (Da Nang city).

The structure was built in 1826 during the reign of King Minh Mang to guard the North-South route and was renowned as the “First Grand Gateway of the World.” Hai Van Quan is a complex of military defensive works including ramparts, warehouses, watchtowers, and fortresses.

It has been a familiar stop for many travelers traversing Hai Van Pass by road. In 2017, Hai Van Quan was recognized as a National Historic and Artistic Architectural Monument by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

After nearly 200 years, the site had severely deteriorated. In December 2021, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, in collaboration with the Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports, launched a project to conserve, restore, and promote the value of Hai Van Quan.

The restoration project, adhering to the original Nguyen Dynasty architecture, spans approximately 6,500 square meters with a total investment of over 42 billion VND, 50% of which is funded by Da Nang and 50% by Thua Thien Hue.

In addition to Hai Van Quan, from August 1st, the An Lang site (the tombs of Kings Duc Duc, Thanh Thai, and Duy Tan) will also be open to visitors.
