Hoi An is the world’s best value destination 2024

Advertisements

Vietnam has topped the list of the world’s best value destinations for the first time in 2024, with Hoi An Ancient Town being the representative destination, according to a holiday cost measure.

Hoi An is a favorite destination for domestic and foreign tourists. Photo: Chung Bao Ngan.

The Travel Price Index recently published by NerdWallet shows that travel costs have increased by 10% compared to 2019, the period before Covid-19. This may not seem particularly significant, but you will realize that the money spent will not take you as far as it did 4 or 5 years ago.

People are starting to look towards Asia for affordable vacations as the cost of living in most countries in this region remains much lower compared to the US or Europe.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the best value destination for 2024 is the peaceful Hoi An Ancient Town in Central Vietnam, where a meal costs only 1.48 USD and a local beer is priced at under 1 USD.

According to research by The Post Office UK, Hoi An is one of the eight destinations with local prices lower than in 2023 (a further decrease of 14.4%) and the value of money also tends to decline. The average total cost here is 51.15 euros.

This is the first time Vietnam has topped the ranking, moving up from 6th place last year. Cape Town (South Africa) – last year’s top spot, now ranks second with a cost of around 54.35 euros. Mombasa (Kenya) ranks third with 54.93 euros. Tokyo (Japan) and Algarve (Portugal) rank 4th and 5th, respectively.

Hoi An offers many low-cost travel experiences, attracting visitors to stay longer. Photo: @julieythe1st.

Hoi An is one of the most sought-after destinations for backpackers and digital nomads in Vietnam. However, unlike Bali and other popular resort destinations across Asia, Hoi An has not yet been affected by urbanization.

According to Budget Your Trip estimates, the average cost for a week-long trip to Hoi An is 318 USD. This cost depends on the traveler’s style and level of comfort. For budget-conscious travelers, they can spend at least 9.8 USD on meals per day, 19 USD on transportation, and 41 USD for a night at a hotel. Additionally, Hoi An still offers many upscale hotels and resorts for travelers to choose from.

In July, Hoi An was voted by Travel + Leisure readers as one of the top 5 cities in the world in 2024 (World’s Best Cities 2024). TripAdvisor users also voted Hoi An Ancient Town as one of three Vietnamese destinations in the list of “25 Most Loved Destinations in Asia,” alongside the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City and the Cu Chi Tunnels.

Bitcoin Nears $70K on Back of Trump’s Speech, Bitcoin Cash and Base Memecoins Lead Crypto Market Gains

Advertisements

Mt. Gox payouts seem to have not spooked BCH holders as the forked version of bitcoin outperformed the market in an otherwise slow trading day.

Bitcoin neared the $70,000 mark for the first time since early June in Asian afternoon hours, days after Republican candidate Donald Trump revealed plans to make the asset a national strategic asset if brought to power in November.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and BRETT, a relatively new memecoin on the Base blockchain led gains in the crypto market on Monday. Meanwhile, Solana’s SOL jumped 6%, leading gains among major tokens, as BNB Chain’s BNB, ether (ETH) and XRP rose between 2-5%.

BCH is up over 10% as Mt. Gox finishes distributing tokens to its creditors, beating the CoinDesk 20, a measure of the largest and most liquid digital assets, which is up 3.6%.

CoinDesk Indices data shows that bitcoin (BTC) is up 3%, trading above $69,500, while Ether (ETH) is up 4%, trading above $3300.

This steady rise in price for BTC caused the liquidation of a $13.8 million short bet, while $11.4 million ETH short were wiped out, according to CoinGlass data.

In a highly anticipated speech on Saturday, Trump said that if elected in November, he would fire current SEC Chair Gensler, build a strategic bitcoin reserve, and prevent the U.S. from selling its bitcoin holdings. He believes that the asset could compete with gold one day and be “the steel industry of 100 years ago.”

Initially, some analysts believed that BCH would be the loser in the Mt. Gox trade, as the bankruptcy redemptions would result in a disproportionately larger percentage of BCH coming into the market compared to Bitcoin, but that fear seems to have been unfounded.

The market seems to be reacting favorably to BRETT, a ‘mascot’ memecoin on the already meme-heavy Base blockchain. BRETT is the roommate to Matt Furie’s Pepe the Frog, a comical slacker character from Boy’s Club.

BRETT is up 11% in the last 24 hours, while POPCAT, a cat-themed memecoin is up 7%.

Meanwhile, Trump-themed tokens continue in the red, despite a recent address by former-President at the BTC 2024 conference in Nashville.

The MAGA (TRUMP) token is down 6% on-day, according to CoinGecko data, and down 18% in the last week. TREMP is trading flat, down 0.3% in the last 24 hours, while down almost 10% over the last week.

Venezuela’s Election Body Says Nicolas Maduro Reelected President, Opposition Claims Victory Too: Reports

Advertisements

Venezuela’s dependence of crypto has been fuelled by a a dire economic situation, international sanctions, and nearly 8 million citizens fleeing the country in the past decade.

Venezuela’s election body has announced that Nicolas Maduro has been reelected President of the nation, even though the opposition has claimed victory too, according to reports.

The South-American country’s dependence of crypto has been fuelled by a dire economic situation, international sanctions, and nearly 8 million citizens fleeing the country in the past decade. It is one of the primary remittance-dependent nations in the continent with over $461 million in remittances in 2023 coming through cryptocurrencies, according to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PDVSA, even looked to Tether (USDT) as a means to bypass sanctions placed on it by the United States, according to reports earlier this year. However, Venezuela ended its Petro cryptocurrency in Jan. 2024, more than five years after it was first launched.

The election authority, controlled by Maduro loyalists, said Maduro won 51% of the vote and opposition candidate Edmundo González secured 44% but since these results were based on 80% of voting stations, this marked an irreversible trend, the Associated Press reported.

In a speech, Maduro praised the electoral system, alleged the system was the target of a failed “massive hack” by a foreign actor, which he refused to identify, and called Argentina’s President Javier Milei a “sociopath.” Milei said on X Venezuelans chose to end Maduro’s dictatorship and that Argentina is not going to recognize another fraud.

The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said they had “serious concerns” about the election results and Republican Sen. Marco Rubio from Florida which has the largest Venezuelan community in the U.S. said Maduro’s government had “just carried out the most predictable and ridiculous sham election in modern history.”

“Today the dignity and courage of the Venezuelan people triumphed over pressure and manipulation,” said Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on X.

Two Foreigners Deported for Graffiti Vandalism in Ho Chi Minh City

Advertisements

District 1 Police apprehended Tardieu Kerrigan Marcus Trevor, a 24-year-old from New Zealand, and Extrammiana Pablo, a 26-year-old from France, for defacing property with spray paint. The authorities have charged them with engaging in activities not permitted by Vietnamese law and issued administrative sanctions along with the expulsion order.

The incident took place at 11 PM on July 22, when Tardieu was caught in the act of spraying graffiti on a rolling door on Pho Duc Chinh Street, Nguyen Thai Binh Ward. Extrammiana was found standing nearby, serving as a lookout. Police seized 23 cans of spray paint from the scene and detained both individuals.

The evidence being confiscated by the police.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Tardieu and Extrammiana had rented hotels in the Nguyen Thai Binh and Suong Nguyet Anh Streets area of District 1. However, their temporary residence was not registered by the hotel owner as required by regulations. The duo met through social media and conspired to vandalize city properties under the guise of street art.

Their graffiti activities were widely shared on social media, which they used to gain attention and create a viral effect, negatively impacting public opinion and the city’s aesthetics. Authorities have classified their actions as an organized violation.

In addition to their deportation, the police have ordered Tardieu and Extrammiana to clean up all the graffiti they created in public spaces. This incident is part of a broader effort by the authorities to address the rising issue of graffiti in the city center, which has seen a notable increase in recent months.

Just last month, District 1 Police fined and required a 28-year-old New Zealand citizen to repaint a resident’s door after catching him in a similar act of vandalism. The local community has expressed growing concern over the frequency of such incidents, prompting stricter enforcement measures from the authorities.

Deutsche Telekom Joins RWA-Focused XDC as Infrastructure Provider in Digital Asset Push

Advertisements

The company already runs nodes on multiple blockchain networks and is considering bitcoin mining, its web3 head revealed last month at a conference.

German telecommunications giant, Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary announced on Thursday that it will expand its Web3 services to the XDC Network (XDC), a blockchain focused on tokenized real-world assets (RWA), trade finance and decentralized physical infrastructure (DePin).

Deutsche Telekom MMS, dedicated to cloud and internet infrastructure, joined the network as an infrastructure provider and will operate a standby masternode. This type of node does not validate transactions on the blockchain as default, but will be called into action if the number of operating validator masternodes drop below the required level of 108.

“This addition utilizes our enterprise-grade infrastructure to enable secure blockchain-based applications, with a focus on the finance sector,” said Dirk Röder, head of Deutsche Telekom MMS’s web3 unit.

The announcement is the latest example of the global telecom company’s growing blockchain prowess, following Röder’s comment last month at the Bitcoin Prague conference last month that the Deutsche Telekom MMS will start mining bitcoin (BTC). The company already runs nodes on Bitcoin and Lightning networks, he said then.

On top of that, the company operates validators on a range of proof-of-stake blockchains including Ethereum (ETH), Polygon (MATIC) and Polkadot (DOT), and offers a staking service where customers can deposit tokens to earn rewards for maintaining the network.

XDC is a layer-1 blockchain that’s compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), that claims to offer fast transaction speed and “near zero” gas fees. The network hosts euro and U.S. dollar stablecoins and tokenized versions of real-world assets such as gold and U.S. Treasuries.

Ether Down Over 7.5% as ETHE Outflows Ramp Up

Advertisements

Most Ether ETFs were in the green during the Wednesday U.S. trading session, but Grayscale’s converted Ethereum Trust ETF posted a net outflow of over $800 million.

Ether (ETH) is down over 7.5% in the first hours of East Asia’s business day, trading hands above $3100 as the market continues to be concerned about outflows from Grayscale’s converted Ethereum Trust ETF {{ETHE}}.

Market data from SoSoValue shows that ETHE had a net outflow of over $810 million. This is similar to the first weeks of Grayscale other major crypto trust, GBTC, when it experienced heavy outflows during the first weeks of the bitcoin ETFs trading earlier this year.

Most of the other ETH ETFs continued in the green for flows during the Wednesday session, with BlackRock’s ETHA leading the pack with $283.9 million for inflow, followed by Bitwise’s ETHW, which registered $233.6 in inflow, and in third place Fidelity’s FETH that clocked $145.7 million in inflow.

ETH is up 6% in the last month, and 72% in the last year.

Overall, Ether has outperformed the CoinDesk 20 (CD20), an index that tracks the largest digital assets, year-to-date, with the CD20 up 21.6% compared to ETH which is up 35%.

ETH has continued to trade closely in line with Nvidia (NVDA), which is down over 6% today. Crypto prices have been strongly correlated with the chipmaker’s stock for most of the year.

Opportunities in Vietnam Stock Market Amid Foreign Investment Surge

Advertisements

Vietnam Insider has highlighted the strengths of Vietnam’s domestic stock market, revealing significant opportunities for local investors as foreign capital increasingly flows into the country.

Amid global economic turbulence, foreign investors see Vietnam as an attractive investment destination. While many regions face conflicts, Vietnam remains a peaceful nation and a key export hub.

The global economy is currently unstable, with major markets engaged in intense economic competition. In the United States, upcoming elections add further uncertainty. Regardless of the election outcome, it is expected that the US will continue to strengthen economic ties with Vietnam, presenting an advantage over other markets. Vietnam’s numerous trade agreements with the US and Europe provide a solid foundation for expanding investment and market reach.

These trade agreements have been crucial in sustaining Vietnam’s recent growth, and the country is poised to continue benefiting from shifts in global investment patterns. Since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has seen a surge in exports and robust foreign direct investment. Vietnam’s stable political and economic environment, coupled with balanced internal and external affairs, has shielded its economy from global downturns.

Despite the opportunities presented by shifting capital flows, the challenge for investors lies in their ability to capitalize on these opportunities. One limitation recently observed in the Vietnamese economy is lower-than-expected credit growth, indicating constrained domestic expansion.

Investors believe that domestic businesses and investors need to invest with greater confidence. The current global landscape is favorable for Vietnam, yet some investors remain hesitant, resulting in reduced investment and slower credit growth. To fully leverage this potential, the domestic market requires further development.

Sophie Dao, Senior Partner at Global Business Services LLC (GBS), notes that some major foreign investors have yet to enter Vietnam, raising concerns about the readiness of Vietnamese businesses. A critical issue is the lack of high-tech human resources, which needs to be addressed promptly. Vietnam must invest in workforce training to prepare for the arrival of foreign enterprises.

Both the public and private sectors must be prepared to welcome new investment as geopolitical shifts bring about significant changes. Educational institutions should focus on training high-tech personnel, while regulatory bodies need to implement policies that encourage, promote, and allocate budgets for this purpose.

Vietnamese Shoppers Spent $6 Billion as Online Shopping Surged in H1 2024

Advertisements

In the first half of 2024, Vietnamese consumers spent an impressive VND143.9 trillion ($6 billion) on online shopping, highlighting the rapid expansion of the country’s e-commerce sector.

E-commerce continues to be a significant growth area in Vietnam’s economy. According to market analysis firm Metric, the sector saw over 54% growth in both sales and transaction volume compared to the same period in 2023.

The leading five e-commerce platforms—Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and TikTok Shop—reported remarkable figures, with VND143.9 trillion ($6 billion) in sales and 1.533 million successful deliveries. This marks a 54.91% increase in revenue and a 65.55% rise in transaction volume compared to the first half of 2023.

This growth underscores the strong development of Vietnam’s e-commerce market and shows how businesses are leveraging the shift from offline to online shopping.

A notable trend is the rise of Shop Mall (official store) segments. In the first half of 2024, the number of Shop Malls increased by 12.29% compared to the same period last year.

High-volume sellers on Shopee often have warehouses in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s major economic hubs with advanced logistics systems. Additionally, the Red River Delta region is emerging as a promising area due to its dense population and high consumer demand.

Beauty products, women’s fashion, and home goods continue to lead in both sales and volume across all five e-commerce platforms. Notably, affordable products priced under VND200,000 remain highly attractive, with a 3% increase in market share compared to last year. This trend reflects a broader pattern of budget tightening amid current economic conditions, with consumers prioritizing affordable options.

In the first half of 2024, technology brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi dominated the top sales rankings, highlighting strong consumer demand for tech products.

Among the top 10 highest-grossing brands in Vietnam’s e-commerce market, only one local brand, Vinamilk, made the list. This underscores the intense competition on e-commerce platforms and suggests that domestic brands need more strategic planning to enhance their market presence.

According to Metric, the back-to-school season (late August to early September) is a peak period for office supplies on e-commerce platforms. Sales of stationery items such as pens, notebooks, and various types of paper surged as consumers prepared for the new school year. These products, typically priced under VND50,000, remain popular among Vietnamese shoppers.
