The company planned to raise $400 million at a $4 billion valuation two years ago.

Metaverse platform The Sandbox has raised $20 million at a $1 billion valuation as it looks to enhance its user-generated multiplayer gaming platform.

Kingsway Capital and Animoca Brands led the funding round, which featured investment from LG Tech Ventures and True Global Ventures, according to a press release.

In 2022, The Sandbox looked to raise $400 million at a $4 billion valuation.

The Sandbox’s native token SAND rose 4.5% after the funding round was announced, its market cap is now $1.1 billion, per CoinDesk data.

A portion of the capital will be used to develop a decentralized metaverse for mobile devices, which is expected to launch in 2025. The Sandbox will also update its Game Maker and 3D editor tools.

“McKinsey estimated that by 2030 the metaverse could add $5 trillion to the global economy,” Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, said. “Today, games like Minecraft and Roblox are some of the most popular titles in the world, but they do not provide their users with digital property rights. The Sandbox represents the evolution of UGC games for the age of digital ownership.”

Nike in Asia: A Case Study of the “China Plus One” Strategy

Advertisements

Nike, the iconic brand of sportswear and footwear, is a global giant with a fascinating manufacturing history. But where exactly are Nike products made?

This guide and video explore the behind-the-scenes of Nike’s production in Asia, shedding light on the processes and strategies behind this global success, perfectly illustrating the “China Plus One” strategy.

The Legacy of Nike: From Oregon to Asia

Nike’s journey began in 1964 under the name Blue Ribbon Sports, a small distributor of Japanese running shoes founded by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. In 1971, the company rebranded as Nike, inspired by the Greek goddess of victory. Nike’s path, marked by innovation and strategic expansion, has made it an undeniable force in the sports industry.

In the 1980s, Nike made a decisive move by relocating much of its production to Asia. This strategic decision was driven by several factors, including the availability of skilled labor, efficient factories, and expanding markets.

Countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and China became key partners, allowing Nike to explore new techniques and incorporate cultural influences into its products. In 1995, Nike established itself in Vietnam, becoming a major economic player. This move marked a turning point for the brand, solidifying its presence in the region and deploying the “China Plus One” strategy.

Why Relocate Production to Asia?

In recent years, Asia has emerged as a global manufacturing hub, attracting companies from around the world. Several factors explain this attractiveness:

  • Lower labor costs in many Asian countries allow for more cost-effective production, providing a competitive edge in the global market.
  • Companies can easily find skilled individuals mastering the latest manufacturing techniques, ensuring high-quality products that meet international standards.
  • Well-established supply chains in Asia, developed over years, facilitate the movement of goods from factories to consumers.

Nike’s Footprint in Asia

Nike’s manufacturing network in Asia exemplifies the use of regional expertise for global success. Vietnam, in particular, has become a pillar of Nike’s supply chain and a flagship country in their “China Plus One” strategy.

Watching this video will allow you to:

  • Understand Nike’s manufacturing strategies in Asia.
  • Discover where most of Nike’s suppliers are located.
  • Learn how to leverage this information to identify key factories and suppliers for your business.

By 2023, Vietnam became Nike’s largest manufacturing hub, producing 50% of the company’s footwear, more than any other country in the world. Vietnam is also the largest producer of Nike apparel, contributing 29% to the brand’s global output.

China, with its vast industrial base and technological prowess, remains a key player in producing Nike apparel and other products. Indonesia, known for its diverse manufacturing capabilities, contributes to the production of specialized sports equipment.

Vietnam’s legacy of craftsmanship and quality assurance, combined with China’s industrial strength and Indonesia’s specialized capabilities, creates a dynamic and resilient network that drives Nike’s global success.

Other Brands Manufacturing in Vietnam

Nike is not the only brand exploiting the potential offered by Vietnam to centralize part of its production and adopt the “China Plus One” strategy.

Other giants in the sportswear and fashion industry, such as Adidas, Puma, and Uniqlo, have also made Vietnam a central hub in their supply chains.

Adidas

Adidas has significantly reduced its production in China and shifted much of it to Vietnam. Currently, about 50% of their shoes are made in Vietnam.

Puma

Vietnam has become the largest sourcing region for Puma’s shoes, with about 26% of their branded products made in the country.

Uniqlo

Uniqlo, Japan’s largest fashion chain, has also recognized Vietnam’s manufacturing potential. The company has increased its number of major suppliers in the country by 40% over the past year.

These examples from numerous major brands highlight Vietnam’s prime position as an ideal destination for supply chain diversification and a strategic reallocation of production away from China.

Nike’s strategy in Asia, perfectly illustrating the “China Plus One” approach, is a lesson in leveraging regional expertise for global success. By adapting to the specificities of each region, Nike has created a dynamic and resilient manufacturing network, ensuring a prosperous future for the brand and maintaining control over their global supply chain.

Crypto Security Firm Ironblocks Builds ‘Firewall’ for DeFi Protocols

Advertisements

“Once you get hacked in most of the cases you’re done,” CEO Dadosh said. “And this is what we’re trying to prevent.”

A cottage industry of crypto security firms police the aftermath of protocol hacks and heists. Now one of them is out with a “firewall” aimed at stopping those thefts beforehand.

Blockchain security platform Ironblocks’ new tool is a free service for developers who want to add security to their smart contracts, CEO Or Dadosh told CoinDesk. Called Firewall, it allows them to plug-and-play various security “policies” to monitor transactions on their decentralized finance protocols for suspicious attempts.

The open-source toolkit could offer at least some salve to the ever-present threat of hacks in DeFi. Dadosh estimated any given week brings with it as many as 10 different hacks of protocols offering lending, trading, staking or other financial services to crypto holders. Those heists add up: PeckShield estimated $60 million in losses in April.

Firewall sits inside the smart contracts processing protocols’ transactions, Dadosh said. Developers get their pick of a handful of policies that scour the flow for sketchy patterns and other tells that a hack is in progress.

“It doesn’t stop or pause the application, it just stops the specific transaction that may attack the application, just like in web2 firewalls,” Dadosh said.

At launch, the service has three big-ticket users: the zkEVM chain Linea, AltLayer and the layer-2 network Kinto. Dadosh said more are on the way.

Because the service is free to use, it is not meant to be a direct moneymaker for Ironblocks, an Israeli startup that last raised $7 million in venture funding in early 2023. Instead, it’s a feeder for the company’s other crypto cyber defense products including the upcoming “Venn Security Network,” according to its website. Dadosh was hesitant to discuss what the network would look like.

But the Firewall toolkit could offer a step forward for security in an ecosystem where code immutability makes incremental updates – a bug here, a potential exploit there – hard to patch on the go. Dadosh said developers can add more policies to their code after the fact, and remove them, too.

How the developers make these changes is really up to them. Perhaps they could turn the decisions over to their projects’ token-holding governance communities, to a wallet controlled by multiple parties (a multisig) or to the DAO.

The point is to stop the hacks before they happen.

“Once you get hacked, in most of the cases, you’re done,” Dadosh said. “And this is what we’re trying to prevent.”

Bank of Canada Begins G-7 Monetary Easing Cycle, Trimming Benchmark Rate 25 Basis Points

Advertisements

Bitcoin prices could receive a tailwind from lower interest rates in developed economies.

As expected, the Bank of Canada Wednesday morning cut its benchmark overnight rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%.

The move was anticipated by most economists as policymakers in Canada had previously signaled satisfaction with the direction of inflation alongside some concern about slowing economic growth.

“[It is] reasonable to expect further cuts to our policy interest rate” if inflation continues lower, said BoC Governor Tiff Macklem in prepared remarks following the decision.

At press time, bitcoin (BTC) was little-changed following the news, trading at $70,500.

With its action today, the BoC becomes the first of the G-7 central banks to begin what’s expected to be a cycle of easier monetary policy after a multi-year battle to cool inflation. Economists are expecting the European Central Bank to become the second of the major central banks to ease at its meeting tomorrow.

And though some members of the U.S. Federal Reserve have recently suggested that bank may hold off on any rate cuts for all of 2024, recent economic data have revealed slowdowns in both economic growth and inflation. Traders currently have priced in a near-60% chance of a rate cut either prior to or at the Fed’s September meeting, according to CME FedWatch.

Other things being equal, tighter monetary policy is often a headwind for risk assets – bitcoin among them – as higher rates boost competition for investor capital. With a cycle of lower interest rates across Western economies seemingly at hand, bitcoin bulls might soon have their sights set on the crypto’s all-time high from March above $73,500.

Additionally, on June 1, Asia Park officially rebranded to become the “super complex” Da Nang Downtown, turning this area into Da Nang’s new “sleepless town” with numerous shows. The centerpiece is the multi-experience art show “Symphony of River.”

This show combines live classical symphony performances with spectacular acts like Cirque du Soleil by acrobats and world-renowned magicians.

Visitors will be immersed in a water theatre play with a storyline consisting of three chapters about the legend of a river.

Bitpanda Drafts Deutsche Bank to Process Fiat Transactions in Germany

Advertisements

This is Bitpanda’s second major partnership in Germany this year after it was enlisted by LBBW to offer crypto custody services in the country.

Crypto broker Bitpanda has enlisted Deutsche Bank (DBK) to process fiat deposits and withdrawals for its users in Germany, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

Bitpanda users can now access German international bank account numbers (IBANs), effectively converting crypto to fiat and vice versa. Deutsche Bank will also provide support for incoming and outgoing transactions on Bitpanda.

“Bringing the best parts of the industry together is where we can create real value for people … From today, we can access a range of Deutsche Bank’s products, unlocking benefits for our team and our users,” said Lukas Enzersdorfer-Konrad, Bitpanda’s deputy CEO, in the statement.

In April, the Austrian crypto firm partnered with Germany’s largest state-backed lender, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW), to offer crypto custody services in the country. The service will go live in the second half of this year.

Deutsche Bank is no stranger to crypto and tokenization. The German banking giant added crypto custody and tokenization to its repertoire last year through a collaboration with Taurus.

Taurus, which is also backed by Deutsche Bank, also offers tokenized SME loans through the lending platform Teylor.

Australian Regulator Scolded Over ‘Misleading’ Release, Must Pay Costs as Block Earner Avoids Penalty

Advertisements

Block Earner doesn’t need to pay a penalty because it acted honestly in seeking to engage with government over regulation of crypto-related products and services.

An Australian judge ordered the country’s financial regulator to pay some of the costs of a legal dispute with crypto-based startup Block Earner and chided it for publishing a “misleading media release.”

The rebuke follows a February ruling by Judge Ian McNeil Jackman that Block Earner’s yield-bearing “Earner” product was unlicensed while its DeFi “Access” service did not need the same licensing and could continue to be offered. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) sued Block Earner over the two products in 2022.

ASIC subsequently published a press release entitled “Court finds Block Earner crypto product needs financial services licence.” While the release acknowledged that ASIC had been unsuccessful in arguing that Access needed a license, Jackman upheld Block Earner’s allegation that it was “unfair and misleading.”

Jackman also determined that the fintech company should be relieved of paying a penalty for Earner because it acted honestly in seeking to engage with the government over regulation of crypto-related products and services. ASIC was ordered to pay costs incurred by Block Earner after the federal court’s Feb. 9 judgement.

“The court rightly calls out ‘a deeper issue’ that the ‘rules of the legal system are promulgated and clear’ noting that obtaining legal advice in an emerging area like crypto will support an argument for relief from a penalty,” Blockchain Australia Chair Michael Bacina said in a statement.

“Crypto projects which charge ahead without seeking proper legal advice not only risk their products infringing the law, but also remove a potential argument for relief of a penalty in the event an innovative product in an area of unclear guidance end up being found to be infringing.”

Vietnam vs. Cambodia for Manufacturing and Sourcing

Analysis on Textile and Garment Manufacturing

Vietnam is noted for its cost-effective and highly efficient labor force. A reader on this blog shared, “Vietnam’s garment factories are known for their high productivity and strong work ethic,” illustrating the country’s labor strengths.

Despite having less advanced technology, Vietnam compensates with a mature infrastructure and significant market share, especially in the US market.

“Vietnam’s established infrastructure supports extensive manufacturing operations,” highlighted Sheng Lu, Professor, Department of Fashion & Apparel Studies, University of Delaware

In contrast, Cambodian factories often face issues with labor-intensive work and less safe environments. A reader mentioned, “Factories in Cambodia can be more crowded, raising concerns about worker welfare.”

“Working conditions in some factories raise ethical concerns, highlighting the need for stronger labor regulations and worker safety protocols.”, added this page from Giz Cambodia

Economic and Strategic Factors

Vietnam’s well-established infrastructure and stable political environment provide a robust foundation for large-scale manufacturing. On the other hand, while still developing, Cambodia is becoming increasingly attractive to investors looking for cost-effective alternatives. However, infrastructural challenges can impact efficiency and reliability.

Vietnam often adheres to international standards, making it favorable for brands emphasizing sustainability and social responsibility. Improvements in safety and technology are necessary for Cambodia, but its cost advantages cannot be overlooked for certain market segments.

“Vietnam’s workforce is highly disciplined and efficient, making it ideal for high-volume production.”, we can read on Sheng Lu blog comments

Choosing between Vietnam and Cambodia for manufacturing and sourcing depends on specific business needs, including cost, technology, and compliance requirements.
