Empowering Financial Access: Insights from the Decision Lab Report

Advertisements

Lower salaries and precarious personal finances are driving growing demand for consumer credit, according to new research from Home Credit Vietnam, a consumer finance provider, and market research consultancy Decision Lab. The research also reveals that people on low incomes need support to improve their financial literacy to better balance their budgets.

Published in a report, ‘Supporting Vietnamese People to Improve their Financial Well-being’, the research shows that most people saw their incomes stagnate in 2023. About one-third (36%) earned less last year than in 2022. A further third (34%) saw little to no change in their monthly incomes. Today, one-fifth (21%) of people struggle to cover their regular monthly expenses. Meanwhile, half (49%) earn just enough to afford the basic essentials each month.

For this reason, most people want to save more for emergencies. However, just a third (35%) managed to do so in 2023. And nearly half (49%) have sufficient savings to cover essential expenses for a maximum of three months. Those with low salaries – below VND 5 million a month – are in the most precarious position regarding their personal finances.

Growing demand for credit

This is creating greater demand for consumer credit and personal finance products. However, not all consumers can borrow from banks. For example, those on low incomes might not have the paperwork required for a bank loan. About a third of people either do not have or would not be comfortable providing their labour contract (31%) or wage slip (33%) as part of a loan application.

This lack of access to loans is increasing the appeal of credit cards and buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) plans. Almost half (44%) of people used a credit card over the last 12 months. Meanwhile, BNPL has amassed a 16% share of the consumer credit market despite being a relative newcomer to Vietnam.

Download the full report at the Decision Lab’s website.

However, almost 40% of people with a loan or credit debt over the last 12 months struggle to meet their monthly repayments. Some reasons for this include a lack of financial literacy and poor awareness of the consequences of defaulting on debt. For example, about half of people who have taken out a loan are unaware that missed repayments could lead to a bad credit rating (46%), financial penalties (49%), or problems getting credit in the future (57%).

Thue Quist Thomasen, CEO of Decision Lab, said: “Our new report highlights that a significant group of Vietnamese consumers – those on low incomes or lacking certain documents – are underserved when it comes to personal finance and borrowing. This represents a real gap in the market for consumer credit companies who can offer these customers innovative financial products, utilizing digital-first platforms and streamlined application procedures.”

Bridging credit and financial literacy gaps

Consumer finance companies can help to bridge these gaps in access to credit and financial literacy. Unlike banks, consumer finance companies can make it easier for people on low incomes to access credit through simpler application forms, faster approval procedures, and more convenient digital platforms.

Meanwhile, consumer finance companies are in a position to empower people to take control of their money through strengthening financial literacy. Educating customers on borrowing, budgeting, and saving can help them avoid irresponsible lenders and achieve their long-term financial goals.

Commenting on the report, Mr. Jakub Kudrna, Chief Strategy Officer of Home Credit Vietnam, said: “For nearly 16 years in Vietnam, Home Credit has been more than just a financial institution; we have become a top trusted companion to over 16 million customers and thousands of partners across the country. We take pride not only in being the market pioneer but also in leading the way with sustainable growth practices. Our innovative and responsible financial solutions have made financing more accessible, affordable, and secure for millions of customers, fostering financial inclusion and contributing to the country’s economic growth.

This inaugural report, produced in collaboration with Decision Lab, reflects our passion for the work we do. It embodies our aspiration to share insights, inspire change, and collectively enhance our financial ecosystem. We see this as an opportunity to work alongside our peers in the industry—to learn, to grow, and to contribute even more to the consumer finance sector and to the broader Vietnamese economy.”

Hedera’s HBAR Doubles, Then Falls 25%, as BlackRock Links Diminish

Advertisements

Hedera announced on Tuesday that BlackRock’s U.S. Treasury money market fund had been tokenized on its blockchain.

Hedera’s native HBAR token surged by over 107% on Tuesday, then slipped 25%, as investors believed that BlackRock was involved in a fund tokenization project on the Hedera blockchain.

On Tuesday, Hedera announced that BlackRock’s ICS U.S. Treasury money market fund had been tokenized on the Hedera blockchain in collaboration with Archax. Hedera supporters on social media began claiming that BlackRock chose Hedera to tokenize its fund, although this wasn’t the case.

Archax CEO Graham Rodford said that “it was indeed an Archax choice to put [the fund] on Hedera,” in response to criticism about misleading marketing from Hedera.

BlackRock entered the real-world asset (RWA) tokenization sector last month when it launched its USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund on Ethereum.

The HBAR token is still up by 61% over the past 24 hours, but the 2% market depth remains relatively thin, with $900,000 in cumulative bids on the Binance and Upbit order books within 2% of the current price of 14 cents. The token has over $2.6 billion in trading volume over the past 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap.

CoinGlass data shows that funding rates across all derivative exchanges are heavily negative, which means those holding short positions have to pay those holding long positions, indicating a bearish bias. The ratio of longs and shorts on Binance is currently 0.85.

The weighted short interest, coupled with a lack of liquidity, creates a landscape for a volatile trading period that could culminate in a return to parity or a short squeeze, with open interest having risen by 442% to $160 million in the past 24 hours.

Nigeria Directs Entities to Identify Those Dealing Crypto With Bybit, KuCoin, OKX and Binance

Advertisements

Any perpetrator or “suspected agent” secretly working with all cryptocurrency platforms, “buying and selling USDT illegally” will be arrested, the directive said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria issued a directive on Tuesday asking financial institutions to identify persons or entities transacting in or operating with Bybit, KuCoin, OKX and Binance, according to a letter seen by CoinDesk.

The letter, addressed to Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFls), Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) and members of the public, also cautioned and reminded the institutions that dealing in cryptocurrencies or facilitating payments for cryptocurrency exchanges is prohibited.

The latest action comes after an ongoing saga between Binance and Nigeria’s government, which has made international headlines. The Nigerian government accused Binance of enabling currency speculation that crashed its currency, the naira, invited two of its executives into the country, then arrested them, and one of them escaped.

The regulatory authority also wants the financial institutions to “ensure that such accounts are put on PND (Post No Debit) instruction for 6 months.” Any breaches of the directive would attract severe regulatory sanctions.

Notably, the letter said any perpetrator or “suspected agent” secretly working with all cryptocurrency platforms, “buying and selling USDT illegally,” will be arrested. It is the “duty of the Central Bank of Nigeria to investigate economic problems in the country.”

However, “it’s noteworthy that the recent circular did not mention any indigenous crypto exchanges, likely because many Nigerian crypto companies, such as Flincap, have been actively pursuing the required licenses,” said Nathaniel Luz, CEO of Flincap, a platform for OTC crypto exchanges.

Global Wind Energy Industry Overview Report

Advertisements

Introduction

Energy sources from wind use the kinetic energy created by air in motion to produce electricity through the various turbines offered in the market. The amount of energy produced majorly depends on the size of the turbine and the lengths of its blades which is directly associated with the wind speed. Wind and solar energy are currently the fastest-growing renewable technologies globally due to falling costs, targeted policy support, and the wider acceptance of global markets of the competitiveness of renewables compared to traditional fossil fuels.

Global wind generation capacity has increased by around 75% in the past 20 years with onshore wind projects leading the way with an installed capacity of 698GW in 2020 with offshore following with 34GW and offering tremendous potential for growth in the future.

Wind Energy Analysis

As seen in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3, onshore has seen a stable improvement of technology due to turbine price drop, turbine technology progress, and the increase of supply chain competition. A global weighted- average cost of electricity (LCOE) has seen a fall of 56% since 2010 from EUR 0.078/kWh to EUR 0.034/kWh in 2020 with a predicted average reaching EUR 0.035/kWh in 2030 and EUR 0.022/kWh in 2050. Average capacity factors rose from 27% to 36% with steady increasing projections reaching a capacity of 52% by 2050. The total CAPEX had a decline of 31% resulting in a 2020 cost of EUR 1192/kW with projected cost reaching a low EUR 946/kW in 2030 and EUR 726/kW in 2050.

On the other hand, larger turbines, longer blades with higher hub heights, and access to higher winds saw offshore wind farms move further from the shore which resulted in a capacity factor increase of 8% from 2010 to 2020 with projections suggesting a capacity of 47% and 52% for years 2030 and 2050. Also, as seen in Figure 2, a reduction of 48% of LCOE in the years 2010-2020 is evidence suggesting the implementation of more offshore farms around the globe with projections in 2030 and 2050 reaching LCOE of EUR 0.062/kWh and EUR 0.044/kWh respectively.

Wind energy technical aspect

Turbine efficiency and manufacturing costs improved immensely over the last decade with the current offshore turbine MIH Vestas having a specific power of 450 W/m2, the most powerful wind turbine of the present. Nevertheless, the choice of turbine suitability depends on the project specifics. For example, high-specific power turbines are more suitable for regions with high average wind speeds.

Therefore, to reach the same capacity factor (yearly average power production/rated power production) the appropriate turbine-specific power should be chosen by giving the most focus on average wind speeds. Studies predict that the capacity density of offshore turbines will reach values of 5.36 MW/km2 with onshore farms in Europe having an average space density of 19.8 (6.2-46.9) MW/km2.

A variation of offshore foundation types is present mainly depending on the water depth, soil conditions, and the size of the turbine. 77% of offshore wind farms completed in 2016 suggest steel monopiles as the option of choice. The latest technology of floating foundations has the potential to decrease CAPEX cost by 65% in scenarios simulated from 2027 to 2040. Moreover, floating substructures have the prospect of exploring locations with deep waters that offer a great opportunity to capitalize on wind energy.

Wind Energy Sources of finance

Banks have issued more debt capital for wind projects, considering wind as a mature technology where risks can be accurately priced compared to other renewable energies that are not yet proven. The finance of wind projects divides into corporate and project finance. Since 2016, European onshore projects have seen 57% of their financing come from project finance and 43% from corporate finance. However, offshore projects, due to their size and higher risks, have been completely dominated by project finance, leading to project ownership by a Special Purpose Company (SPC).

The debt ratio of wind projects has increased in the latest years to 75-90% suggesting that shareholders and banks find it a safe investment. As seen in Figure 4, global average annual onshore wind power investments will more than double from 2018 until 2030 (EUR 128 billion/year) and more than triple over the years till 2050 (EUR 186 billion/year).

Figure 4: Annual Investments of Onshore and Offshore Predicted till 2050 © Structures Insider

Environmental Impacts

Wind power life cycle emissions result from the manufacture, construction, maintenance, and decommissioning processes of wind turbines. A typical turbine contains 89.1% of steel, 5.8% fiberglass, 1.6% copper, 1.3% concrete, and other main materials making it a high carbon emission intense product. Due to the large quantity of steel required, tower manufacturing responds to around 51% of the emissions of gCO2/kWh of all components produced.

Researchers have found that manufacturing/extraction of raw materials and installation stages account for around 90% of the total life cycle emissions of onshore and offshore wind farms. Transport activities contribute to 5.6% of carbon emissions, while maintenance accounts for 3.5%. The percentage may vary offshore due to the higher maintenance requirements and access to the construction site.

Studies estimated carbon emissions of 15 and 12 gCO2e/kWh for onshore and offshore wind farms respectively. Further studies by (Wang et. al, 2019), found that the annual life cycle GHG emissions of a 2MW turbine for a 20-year lifetime offshore and onshore is 75904.84tCO2e and 33278.19tCO2e respectively.

Ha Giang’s new trend: Km0 milestone ice cream draws tourists’ attention

Advertisements

The ice cream treats resemble miniature versions of the renowned Km0 milestone in Ha Giang. Complete with the landmark’s distinctive shape and design, each ice cream features raised lettering in the center displaying the inscription “QL2 Km 290 – Ha Giang 0.Km” (National Highway 2 Km 290 – Ha Giang 0.Km)

“I feel like I’m holding a symbol when I hold one of these ice creams. Just snapping a photo with it instantly transports you to one of Ha Giang’s most famous spots,” shared Thu Giang, a tourist.

The familiar photo spot is renewed with unique ice cream (Photo: Duong Trang).

According to Ms. Hoang Thanh Chieu, the innovative mind behind Ha Giang’s first iconic ice cream, the idea was inspired by 3D ice creams featuring famous landscapes in China. The goal was simple: to offer visitors to Ha Giang not only a refreshing treat but also a unique prop for capturing memorable photos.

To ensure durability during photoshoots, the ice creams boast special ingredients sourced from Germany, allowing them to maintain their shape for approximately 5 minutes without melting quickly. Moreover, the molds used for shaping the ice creams and the packaging boxes are custom-made, guaranteeing both uniqueness and quality.

Priced at 35,000 VND per piece, some tourists have remarked that the ice cream’s price tag is relatively high. However, many agree that its visual appeal and photogenic nature make it worth the investment.

“While the flavor may not be particularly unique, the eye-catching appearance and photo opportunities make this ice cream a worthwhile experience that can significantly boost local tourism,” commented Ngoc Mai, another tourist.

Since its debut in Ha Giang, the landmark ice cream has garnered considerable attention from tourists, particularly the younger demographic. On peak days, Ms. Chieu’s shop sells an average of about 300 pieces.

“Most customers purchase the ice cream to take away. After buying one, they often head straight to the nearby Km0 marker, located just 10 meters from the cafe, to snap some photos before returning to relax at the cafe,” Ms. Chieu noted.

This trend of ice cream shaped like famous landmarks is not unique to Ha Giang. Similar phenomena were observed in other tourist destinations across the country, including Tay Ninh and Hanoi, between August and October 2023. Ice creams resembling iconic structures such as Turtle Tower, Hanoi Cathedral, and the Ba Den mountain landmark have all contributed positively to these destinations’ tourism appeal.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism announced that the 2nd Vietnam Banh Mi Festival will take place from May 17th to 19th at Le Van Tam Park, District 1, aiming to welcome 100,000 visitors. This year’s event will carry the theme “Vietnamese Banh Mi – World Culinary Value.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Khanh, Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, stated that the festival is not just an entertainment event but also a cultural tourism product with a strong Vietnamese essence. The festival will feature activities promoting Vietnamese culinary culture, providing a space for visitors to learn about the history of banh mi through different eras.

The festival will gather approximately 130-150 booths, including renowned banh mi brands with over 50 years of history, restaurants serving banh mi accompaniments, and suppliers of seasoning ingredients and bakery equipment.

Chefs will also showcase 150 dishes paired with banh mi, displayed on a giant banh mi model. These diverse dishes are prepared from local specialties across various regions that contribute to the unique taste of Vietnamese banh mi.

Those who love condensed milk on banh mi will have the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary banh mi, reminiscent of childhood flavors, during specific hours.

Additionally, there will be specialized workshops such as the “Vietnamese Banh Mi in World Tourism and Cuisine” seminar.

Organizers emphasized the top priority of ensuring food safety and hygiene, with the Food Safety Department coordinating closely to implement and monitor standards. This year’s festival is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors for exploration and experiences.

Addressing concerns from last year’s event leaning more towards a market atmosphere than a festival, Ms. Khanh mentioned that this year’s organizers are striving to offer residents and tourists a cultural and festive experience alongside business and networking activities.

Last year, the event was expected to draw 50,000 visitors, but the actual attendance reached 100,000 over four days.

DYDX also has a large release of tokens scheduled but is not experiencing the same pricing pressure.

Ethereum Layer 2 solution Optimism’s native token OP and Yield Guild Games’ YGG token were both in the red during the Asia afternoon trading day, as both tokens have unlocks scheduled for later this week.

In the digital assets world, unlocks refer to the scheduled release of a specified amount of the project’s tokens that were previously locked to prevent team members from dumping on retail investors once they get listed on an exchange.

These unlocks increase liquidity and are generally viewed as a bearish signal, although some analysts argue that they merely amplify the current market trend.

OP is down 3.5% while YGG is down 3% in the last 24 hours, according to market data.

In comparison, the CoinDesk 20 (CD20), a measure of the most liquid digital assets, is flat.

According to market data from Token Unlocks, Optimism is scheduled to unlock 2.3% of its OP token (worth $24.16 million) in the coming days, while YGG’s next unlock will push an additional 5.3% of its circulating supply onto the market, worth $16.7 million.

In the last 14 days, OP is down 24%, while YGG is down approximatley 32%.

Meanwhile, DYDX is scheduled to unlock 10.7% of its circulating supply on May 1, worth around $78 million, according to Token Unlocks. Its token doesn’t appear to be feeling pressure from the upcoming unlock as it’s only down 1.2%.

According to Vietnam News Agency (VNA), information from travel companies in Ho Chi Minh City indicates a surge in demand for trips to Dien Bien during the May 1st holiday commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory. As tours to Dien Bien are now fully booked, most travel companies have announced that they are no longer accepting guests.

However, travel companies have noted that the current limitation for trips to Dien Bien is the shortage of lodging facilities, making it challenging to find suitable accommodations.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Dien Bien Province, there are currently 205 lodging establishments with nearly 2,800 rooms and around 5,100 beds throughout the province. This number is quite modest compared to the demand from tourists during the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.
