Ha Long Bay welcomes more international tourists than domestic tourists

Advertisements

Ha Long Bay welcomes over 610,000 visitors in the first three months of the year, with nearly 82,000 domestic tourists and over 529,000 international visitors.

During the first three months of 2024, Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, saw a bustling influx of international visitors. Despite it being the first quarter of 2024 and not yet the peak summer season, both domestic and international tourists flocked to Quang Ninh Province, generating a total revenue of over 10 trillion Vietnamese dong from tourism.

According to the Ha Long Bay Management Board, as of the end of March, Ha Long Bay received over 610,000 tourists, including nearly 82,000 domestic tourists and over 529,000 international tourists.

Among the aforementioned tourists, nearly 145,000 stayed overnight, with over 9,200 domestic tourists and nearly 136,000 international tourists opting for overnight stays.

The increase in international visitors to Quang Ninh is primarily attributed to sea cruise tourism. International tourists staying in Ha Long Bay mainly come from countries such as South Korea, India, Europe, and the Americas.

It is expected that in April and May, the number of tourists to Ha Long Bay will surge as it enters the peak season for island and sea tourism. Alongside this, tourism demand-boosting activities in Quang Ninh Province, notably the 2024 Ha Long Carnival scheduled for April 30th, will significantly contribute to the growth of tourism in Ha Long.

In 2023, Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, welcomed over 2.46 million tourists, including more than 1.15 million international tourists, with ticket sales revenue reaching nearly 720 billion Vietnamese dong.

Preparing for a major restoration of Ho Chi Minh City’s 123-year-old theater

Advertisements

Expected at the beginning of 2025, Ho Chi Minh City will commence the renovation of the iconic 123-year-old theater.

Ho Chi Minh City Theater, a 123-year-old architectural work, is where the city’s cultural and artistic programs and political and diplomatic events take place.

The Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City has just reported on some key tasks and solutions to address the challenges faced by the cultural and sports sector, including accelerating the implementation progress of projects within the city.

One of the important projects mentioned is the renovation of the national architectural heritage, the City Theater, with a total investment of over 337 billion VND. Currently, the project is in its initial investment phase with specific tasks such as drafting outlines, design tasks, planning contractor selection, organizing bidding processes, etc. It is anticipated that by the beginning of 2025, the city will commence the renovation of this iconic theater, which is over 123 years old, right in its center. The current challenge is that although the project proposed a budget of 5 billion VND for this year, it has not been allocated yet.

According to the resolution of the People’s Council passed in 2023, the theater will undergo renovation and restoration of the main building, addition of technical systems and equipment; organizing relocation, preservation, and usage methods of artifacts, equipment during construction.

As the theater is a national heritage site, a crucial requirement during renovation is to ensure the preservation of its original condition. Therefore, the relevant authorities have conducted a 3D scan of the entire architectural structure. This helps create data files with 3D images, accurate proportions, components, and elements before any repair work is carried out.

The renovation project will take more than 3 years to complete. Construction will be carried out in a phased manner to ensure the regular operation of functional rooms.

In addition to the City Theater, the Department of Culture and Sports has included 7 other major projects in the investment proposal, including the Children’s Cultural Center of Ho Chi Minh City, renovation and repair of Phu Tho Sports Arena; renovation and upgrade of Thong Nhat Stadium; Hoa Lu Stadium; Phu Tho Diving Club; Phu Tho Sports Training Center, and the construction of a new Center for Training Talented Athletes.

The city plans to evaluate and summarize the implementation of these projects on April 30, 2025, to celebrate the anniversary of the reunification of the country. From March 1 to April 30, 2025, evaluations of project implementation results will be conducted, followed by ceremonies to commence projects and inaugurate completed works one after another.

Da Nang’s New Walking Street Along Han River Implements Karaoke Speaker Ban

Advertisements

The recent establishment of a walking street along the Han River in Da Nang, situated in the Hai Chau district, is anticipated to become a prominent attraction for tourists and a vibrant nightlife hub for locals. This initiative aims to bolster tourism and foster community engagement while bolstering Da Nang City’s nighttime economy.

Drawing insights from successful nighttime economic endeavors at night markets and the An Thuong tourist street, the Hai Chau District People’s Committee has implemented a proactive measure: prohibiting karaoke activities by employing portable speakers along the Han River’s walking street. This decision comes in response to previous concerns over the unsightly presence of speaker setups at night markets in the Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts, which led to noise pollution and disturbed nearby residential areas, eliciting negative feedback from tourists.

Instead of karaoke, the Hai Chau District People’s Committee has outlined a clear vision for cultural and artistic enrichment, community engagement, and tourism promotion. APEC Park, equipped with a central stage for scheduled nightly performances, will serve as the primary venue for such activities. Furthermore, during festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Lion and Dragon Festival, Beer Festival, Food Festival, and Hot Air Balloon Festival, roads will be temporarily closed to accommodate festivities.

To enliven the walking street’s ambiance, the district encourages a variety of street art forms, including portrait painting, magic shows, bubble blowing, aerobics, street music, fashion displays, and flash mob performances. Notably, karaoke singing with speakers is strictly prohibited.

Complementing these cultural offerings are ancillary services and mobile vendors offering refreshments, fast food, and souvenirs, catering to both residents and tourists alike.

Spanning from the Tran Thi Ly bridge to the end of APEC Park, with a length of 1.2 kilometers and connectivity to the Nguyen Van Troi bridge, the Bach Dang walking street is set to operate daily from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., commencing from late April 2024 until the end of 2028.

The Hai Chau District People’s Committee envisions the Bach Dang Walking Street as a pivotal tourism asset and nightlife destination, contributing to the city’s economic vitality and leveraging Da Nang’s scenic vistas, including the Bach Dang promenade, Dragon Bridge, and Nguyen Van Troi routes, to enhance tourism services and bolster regional cooperation.

Vietnam’s Rice Export Surges Amid Global Demand

Advertisements

Amidst the persistent fluctuations in supply and pricing observed last year, the global rice trade remains vibrant as we step into the new year. Forecasts indicate that this year will mark the second consecutive period where rice exports from Vietnam surpass 8 million tonnes, generating approximately US$5 billion in revenue.

The decreasing global rice supply has spurred increased import activities in several countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, China, and various other markets, all aiming to secure their food reserves. This trend presents favorable conditions for Vietnamese rice exports in the current year.

The heightened activity in the global rice market stems from multiple factors such as limited supply due to adverse weather conditions, export restrictions in some countries, escalating import demands in numerous markets, and tensions in the Red Sea region. As a result, the rice market is witnessing increased momentum.

Projections for the 2023-2024 crop year indicate a decline in global ending inventories to more than 167 million tonnes, marking an 8.6 million-tonne reduction compared to the previous crop year, and the lowest inventory level recorded in the past six crop years.

India, being the largest exporting country with an annual rice export volume exceeding 20 million tonnes, has imposed policies restricting rice exports since mid-last year. Consequently, many countries are turning to alternative sources of rice supply, particularly from Southeast Asia, thus creating opportunities for Vietnam to expand its exports and secure competitive pricing.

Vietnam’s rice exports exceeded $4 billion last year, and this figure is expected to rise further this year. Nguyen Anh Son, Director of the Import-Export Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), attributes this growth to significant advancements in both production techniques and export strategies within Vietnam’s rice industry. These improvements have bolstered market expansion efforts and elevated the reputation of Vietnamese rice internationally.

Select markets such as Europe, the US, South Korea, and emerging markets in the Middle East are showing a preference for high-quality Vietnamese rice. In light of this, MoIT emphasizes the importance of information sharing and collaborative efforts between localities and rice industry associations to drive market development initiatives.

The Philippines, one of the key importers, is expected to increase its rice imports this year due to a drought affecting domestic rice production. Similarly, China, Vietnam’s third-largest rice import partner, is anticipated to ramp up imports to ensure food security.

Nguyen Ngoc Nam, Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association, underscores the importance of strengthening information dissemination regarding import-export data to maintain a favorable balance between rice supply and demand. Additionally, efforts to conduct market research and implement trade promotion programs are crucial to seize opportunities in various markets.

Moreover, negotiations for preferential trade agreements with potential markets are underway to leverage existing agreements and expand Vietnam’s rice export quotas. It is imperative to raise awareness among traders regarding the implementation of free trade regulations to ensure sustainable production and export practices in Vietnam.

Despite challenges in supply, Vietnam’s rice exports remain robust, with positive growth observed in the first two months of this year. With a presence in over 180 countries and territories, including discerning markets like Europe, the US, South Korea, and Australia, Vietnamese rice continues to maintain its global appeal and competitiveness.

OKX Quietly Settled Regulatory ‘Failings’ With Malta Financial Services Authority

The 304,000 euro ($329,000) “goodwill” settlement with MFSA related to OKX’s Okcoin Europe subsidiary.

Last month, OKX, the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, reached a little-noticed 304,000 euro ($329,000) settlement with the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) for certain “failings” related to its Okcoin Europe subsidiary.

The Malta regulator’s investigation found failings with respect to Article 41 of the MFSA Virtual Financial Assets Act, according to a filing. The article, while vague, seems to say that a regulated financial services or digital asset firm must follow the Maltese government’s directives or risk a fine or being booted from the country.

“On 22 January 2024 the MFSA agreed to settle pending matters with the Company after demonstration of goodwill by the Company,” the regulator said. “Additionally, the Company and the MFSA have also agreed on a number of measures, including the appointment of an independent third-party service provider, to inter alia, review the adequacy of the Company’s governance arrangements.”

Asked by CoinDesk to unpack what OKX’s regulatory failings amounted to, MFSA said: “The information which the Authority is in a position to divulge has already been made public through the notice.”

OKX declined the opportunity to elaborate on what the regulatory problem involved when contacted by CoinDesk. An OKX representative said there would be no further comment on the nature of the exchange’s shortcomings or the goodwill settlement.

OKX has been sunsetting its Okcoin entities in Europe and the U.S. and rebranding them under the OKX banner.

Hong Kong-Based Asset Manager VSFG and Value Partners Apply for Spot Bitcoin ETF

Advertisements

In January, Harvest Global Investments, a major asset-management company in China, purportedly became the first to apply for a spot-bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with the SFC.

Asset manager VSFG, together with its partner, Value Partners, have applied for a spot-bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), VSFG’s Head of Investment and Products Brian Chan told CoinDesk on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, a report from Bloomberg Intelligence said the SFC is likely to allow in-kind creations and redemptions for spot bitcoin ETFs in the second quarter of this year.

In December 2023, less than two weeks after nearly a dozen applicants won approval for spot bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., Hong Kong regulators said they were ready to consider applications for spot crypto ETFs.

In January, Harvest Global Investments, a major asset-management company in China, purportedly became the first to apply for a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) with the SFC. As many as 10 financial institutions have planned to apply to launch bitcoin ETFs in Hong Kong, local reports have previously said.

Hong Kong firm Venture Smart Financial Holdings has also said it will file a spot bitcoin ETF application, according to Bloomberg.

Hong Kong’s regulators have been attempting to loosen their grip on crypto in an attempt to become a global hub for the sector.

A Comprehensive Guide on CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, and GHRP-2

Advertisements

The peptide blend discussed in today’s article consists of three different peptides: CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, and GHRP 2. Although their chemical structures are significantly distinct, CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, and GHRP-2 have been hypothesized to have essential functional aims that may enable them to collaborate efficiently.

CJC-1295 Peptide

Studies suggest that CJC-1295 may increase the quantity of growth-related secretions produced by certain cellular receptors. The growth axis is responsible for controlling growth secretions, which is essential for maintaining the organism’s general homeostasis. Several studies conducted on animals have suggested that these receptors may play a crucial role in this regulation.

It is mostly because CJC-1295 has been hypothesized to lengthen the half-life of the peptide that it may provide such remarkable results. Peptide half-lives typically last for a period that is less than seven minutes. In contrast, the very short half-life of CJC-1295 is prolonged to seven days when the process of expression produces it.

Because of this increased half-life, there is an increase in the presence of secretions. Because of this procedure, the development of an animal test subject, the healing process, and the efficiency of their metabolism are all theorized to be favorably influenced! Several properties have been speculated to be yielded as a result of the study, some of which are as follows:

  • Development of muscular tissue
  • Reduction in fatty tissue accumulation
  • Rapid and more efficient recovery process for damaged tissues
  • The strengthening of immuno-defenses

GHRP-2 Peptide

Research indicates that similar to the secretagogue found in CJC-1295, the secretagogue found in GHRP-2 may potentially boost growth secretions in the animals evaluted in exposure experiments. More specifically, it has been suggested that GHRP-2 may simultaneously stimulate the pituitary gland and zero-in on its activities. When doing experiments on animals, it is important to remember that the animals’ endocrine functions are regulated by a small gland located immediately below their brain stem. In particular, increased protein synthesis linked with muscle growth and repair is brought about by increased production of these secretions, leading to increased expression.

GHRP-2 has been theorized to stop the organism from secreting the peptide that controls the endocrine system. This process may inhibit the organism’s ability to regulate the endocrine system. Because of this mechanism, the normal reaction to preserve homeostasis is believed to be prevented, which would otherwise offset the growth-promoting potential of GHRP-2.

In addition, GHRP-2 is speculated to stimulate the release of ghrelin, which may help compensate for the increased protein synthesis efficiency of the participating animals in the experiment. Investigations purport that this hormone’s principal purpose may be to stimulate an increased desire to consume food, and the stomach is the primary organ responsible for expressing it. When an animal subject is allowed to act on this heightened desire, more energy is made available for conversion, ultimately leading to the growth of additional muscle tissue.

Scientific research into the function of the peptide in the endocrine mechanisms of animal test subjects has led to the speculation of several potential properties associated with GHRP-2. Some properties, such as muscular tissue growth, are comparable to those of CJC-1295. On the other hand, GHRP-2 has been hypothesized to be associated with several other potential properties, including the following:

  • An improvement in anti-inflammatory impacts.
  • An increase in bone density.
  • An increase in skin elasticity and resistance to damage.

Ipamorelin Peptide

Growth hormone-releasing peptide (GHRP) is the chemical name for Ipamorelin. Studies suggest that it may have the effect of quickening the pace at which growth hormone is released into the bloodstream. The natural process by which Ipamorelin has been hypothesized to stimulate the organism’s growth hormone production is believed to be accomplished by accelerating the pace at which it pulses. Research indicates that when compared to other GHRPs, this particular one does not seem to increase appetite. It is believed to be well tolerated in the animal models evaluated, while apparently helping to increase their nitrogen retention. This may also apply to the production of prolactin and cortisol.

Investigations purport that, like CJC-1295, Ipamorelin may cause an increase in the amounts of growth hormone (GH) in the organism. It has also been speculated to induce several additional potential impacts, including the following:

  • Accelerating the process of tissue recovery
  • The possibility of anti-aging actions within the cell
  • Elevated bone density
  • Reduction of fat cell storage
  • Regulatory action on sleep cycles
  • Structurally sounder skin

Researchers interested in further studying the potential of the CJC-1295 & Ipamorelin & GHRP-2 Blend are encouraged to visit the Biotech Peptides website for the highest-quality research compounds. Why Coffee Prices Reach Record-Breaking Heights?

Advertisements

The relentless surge in coffee prices has reached unprecedented levels, with green coffee now commanding 98,100 VND per kilogram, marking a staggering 110% increase from the corresponding period last year. This surge has persisted over four consecutive days, culminating in the highest price ever recorded.

In the recent trading session on March 27, the Central Highlands provinces witnessed a further escalation in green coffee prices, climbing by 1,100 VND per kilogram compared to the preceding session, now resting at the historic high of 98,100 VND.

The steep ascent has left many within the coffee industry astounded, with discussions on coffee business forums highlighting the imminent approach to the 100,000 VND per kilogram mark, a stark contrast to the 46,000 VND recorded just a year ago.

Internationally, the trend echoes as Robusta prices on the London floor hit a new pinnacle at 3,521 USD per ton for May delivery, while Arabica prices on the New York floor surged past 4,130 USD per ton, surpassing previous peaks set on March 10.

Ms. Nguyen Loan, a coffee trader based in Dak Lak, has found herself compelled to curtail her purchases as prices soar beyond feasibility. Import-export activities are also witnessing a slowdown in procurement, as exemplified by Ms. Loan’s experience, where previously agreed-upon prices of 70,000 VND per kilogram are now insufficient to secure goods.

Similarly, Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of Phuc Sinh Group, expressed reluctance in the face of escalating prices, revealing that green coffee is now being offered by dealers at 99,000 VND per kilogram. Consequently, the company’s procurement has been notably diminished, with escalating prices exacerbating potential losses.

This predicament extends to Vietnamese coffee processing and exporting enterprises at large, where the prevailing scenario dictates buying high and selling low, resulting in substantial losses for businesses, with estimates pegging losses in the billions of VND at current price points.

The underlying factors propelling this unprecedented surge, as noted by Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, Nguyen Hai Nam, include dwindling supplies and historically low inventories within businesses. Climate change, compounded by the El Nino phenomenon, has precipitated drought conditions across key coffee-producing regions globally, leading to diminished output. In Vietnam alone, output is projected to decline by 10% in the 2023-2024 crop cycle, owing to growers transitioning away from coffee cultivation during periods of depressed prices.

Moreover, geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea region have amplified shipping costs and other ancillary expenses. Additionally, financial speculation, with coffee emerging as a preferred commodity for investment after oil and gold, has further inflated prices.

In response to the soaring prices, importers are redirecting their procurement efforts to India and Brazil, where Vietnamese goods are comparatively more expensive. However, with Brazil’s upcoming harvest season in April, there’s anticipation that coffee prices may begin to recede.

Despite the challenges, data from the General Department of Customs underscores the resilience of Vietnam’s coffee exports, with the first two months of the year witnessing a notable uptick. Exports amounted to 438,000 tons, raking in nearly 1.4 billion USD, marking a substantial increase in volume and value compared to the same period last year, driven primarily by robust growth in Robusta and Arabica exports.

10 Common Signs Your Basement Needs Repair

Advertisements

Do you think your basement has something important to say?

As homeowners, our basements are often neglected, leaving the unconscious warning signs unnoticed, which could aggravate the problem.

However, how can you know that your basement is in need of repair or not? Do you see the cracks growing across the ceiling and eyesores on the floors? Or, it could be a highly persistent smell of mold that refuses to dissipate.

These are just some of the issues we will try to answer as we dive into our discussion about basement maintenance. Yet, it’s not only that.

Are you battling water leaks? Do you find mold in the corners? These are warning signals that are poking tauntingly at you to do something about it.

This article will take you on a journey that reveals ten frequent indications that your basement is in need of repair.

1. Cracks in the Walls or Floors Of Basement

Cracks in the basement walls or floors show clearly that there is a problem lurking just beneath the ground. They can be due to various causes, including soil movement, hydrostatic pressure or underlying flaws.

In the beginning, the tiny cracks may look unthreatening, but as time passes, their traces become prominent. Failure to address these cracks in a timely manner will result in their expansion, which will allow water ingress and create a foundation that undermines possibilities.

Therefore, what seem to be just the parts of the problem need thoughtful action and speedy solutions so that they may not get worse. Routine crack monitoring and timely repairs of these corners are of utmost importance to protect the strength and durability of the basement.

For Philadelphia residents, where geological and ecological factors can make basements problems worst, asking for professional help is an indispensable decision. This guarantees that your basement repair Philadelphia will be permanently restored thus averting future foundation issues.

2. Water Leakage or Dampness

One of the most apparent signs of the system’s defect is water leakage or dampness in the basement. It can be seen by studying the puddle of water on the floor, water stains on walls, or a musty odor. Causes may include poor drainage systems, foundation cracks, and damaged water pipes.

Overlooking these signs can result in problems like the spread of mold, the decay of wood, and the destruction of stored items. The priority then is to take action quickly to avert the dangers resulting from basement moisture, safeguarding the building and the health of the residents by extension.

3. Efflorescence

Efflorescence, which appears as a white powdery residue on basement walls, is due to the movement of mineral salts through porous walls. Even though it might look unimportant, it is actually a clear symptom of various moisture problems in your basement.

Although efflorescence itself is not a significant threat, it is an indication of a concern that needs to be addressed. Tackling the underlying source of moisture is the key step to stop continued rotting of the walls as well possible damage to the whole structure.

Thus, corrective actions to fix efflorescence and its moisture sources are imperative for the basement to stay dry and safe.

4. Bowed or Buckling Walls Of Basement

Sometimes, bowing or buckling basement walls become a serious threat, prompting immediate action. This deformation comes to the surface when lateral pressure from the soil exceeds the capacity of the wall, which causes the wall to become bent from the inside.

The most common reason for this type of damage is hydrostatic pressure or a lack of proper drainage. Failure to address bowed walls may result in a total collapse of the structure.

Therefore, such a result will threaten not only the safety of the inhabitants but also the whole structure. Hence, quick action must be the goal to rectify the problem and reduce the risks that often accompany the bowed or buckling basement walls.

5. Mold and Mildew Growth

The existence of mold and mildew in the basement isn’t just an aesthetic concern; it also presents serious health risks to residents. Mold flourishes in damp, poorly lit spaces, making basements prime targets for infestation.

Exposure to mold spores can provoke allergies, respiratory ailments, and other health complications. To thwart mold growth and uphold a healthy indoor atmosphere, adequate ventilation, moisture regulation, and rectification of underlying water problems are imperative.

6. Basement Sagging Floors

Sagging or uneven floors in the basement serve as potential red flags for foundation settlement or structural deterioration. This issue may coincide with cracked or shifting walls, posing a threat to the stability of the entire edifice.

Soil displacement, insufficient support beams, or water-induced damage often underlie such problems. Seeking the expertise of a professional engineer or contractor becomes imperative to evaluate the magnitude of the damage and execute requisite repairs.

7. Foul Odors

Persistent foul odors emanating from the basement could indicate various underlying issues, including mold growth, sewage leaks, or stagnant water. These odors are not only unpleasant but also indicate potential health hazards.

Identifying and addressing the source of the odor is crucial for maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent odor-related basement problems.

8. Insect Infestation In the Basement

Basements afflicted with moisture issues become fertile breeding grounds for various pests, including termites, ants, and cockroaches. Beyond structural harm, these pests pose health hazards to occupants.

Indicators of insect infestation in the basement encompass the presence of visible pests, discarded wings, or tunnels within wooden structures. Effective prevention and eradication of insect infestations necessitate proper moisture management and sealing of entry points.

9. Sudden Increase in Utility Bills

A sudden increase in utility bills, notably water or heating costs, might hint at concealed issues within your basement. Leaking pipes, inadequate insulation, or malfunctioning HVAC systems can drive up energy consumption significantly.

Timely resolution of these problems not only reduces expenditure on utility bills but also safeguards the basement and its contents from further damage. By promptly addressing such issues, homeowners can mitigate financial strain while preserving the integrity of their basement infrastructure and protecting valuable belongings stored within.

10. Visible Efforts to Control Moisture

Repeated reliance on makeshift solutions like dehumidifiers or towels to manage moisture in your basement signals underlying issues requiring attention. Although these quick fixes offer temporary relief, they fail to address the root cause of the problem.

Investing in professional repairs and waterproofing solutions is imperative for sustainable moisture management and averting basement damage in the long term. Prioritizing comprehensive solutions over temporary fixes allows homeowners to effectively address underlying issues.

Conclusion

A well-maintained basement is essential for the overall health, safety, and structural integrity of your home. Recognizing the signs of basement problems early can help you address issues promptly and avoid costly repairs in the future.

Whether it’s cracks in the walls, water leakage, or mold growth, ignoring these warning signs can result in more severe damage and compromise the livability of your home. Frequent inspections, proper maintenance, and timely repairs are vital to ensuring a dry, secure, and functional basement for years to come.

Why Vietnam’s Coal Import Surged?

Advertisements

Vietnam is intensifying its coal imports this year, nearly doubling its intake compared to 2023, as revealed by customs data. This surge comes amidst the government’s efforts to reassure foreign investors of stable power provisions, pledging to prevent a recurrence of the power shortages experienced last year.

According to Reuters, with major manufacturing hubs hosting multinational giants such as Samsung Electronics, Foxconn, and Canon, Vietnam’s credibility has been under scrutiny following disruptions caused by inadequate power supply during the previous summer’s prolonged heatwave. Some factories were compelled to halt operations temporarily.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, in a recent meeting with foreign investors, asserted a commitment to prevent any further electricity shortages, as reported by state media. However, attendees noted that while Chinh’s assurances were comforting, they lacked specificity regarding the strategies to achieve this objective.

Vietnam’s dependency on coal imports has become increasingly critical due to its limited capacity for renewable energy adoption and its resolve to evade future power deficits. Phan Xuan Dung, a Vietnam researcher at the Singapore-based ISEAS think tank, emphasized the necessity of importing more coal under these circumstances.

Customs data indicates a substantial 88% rise in coal imports, predominantly from Australia and Indonesia, as of March 15 compared to the same period last year. Additionally, domestic coal production increased by 3.3% in the first two months of the year, covering approximately half of Vietnam’s demand, according to official estimates.

Last year witnessed a 61% surge in coal imports as coal-fired power plants resumed full production, aligning with increased usage trends observed in Indonesia, Malaysia, and neighboring countries.

Forecasts suggest a further escalation in coal imports in the latter half of the year, particularly driven by heightened activities in steel production and other energy-intensive industries.

Although specific power generation breakdowns for this year are unavailable, coal-fired plants accounted for approximately 60% of total output on Monday, according to Vietnam’s power network operator.

The combination of augmented imports and increased domestic output indicates a robust coal supply exceeding 8 million metric tons per month during the typically quieter January-February period, marking an almost 9% upsurge from the average monthly figures of the past two years, the Reuters reported.
