Ho Chi Minh City: Requires inspection and handling of encroachment on roads and sidewalks

Advertisements

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has reported an increase in people violating regulations by stopping, parking, and occupying roads and sidewalks to conduct business or to park two-wheeled vehicles. This situation is particularly problematic in crowded areas and locations.

The department has identified 64 crowded places in Ho Chi Minh City, such as walking streets, shopping centers, schools, and hospitals, that have a complicated situation of stopping, parking, and occupying the road and sidewalks, which can cause disorder and potential traffic accidents.

To address this issue, the Department of Transport has requested functional units and local authorities to strengthen their management, and regularly inspect, and handle organizations and individuals who violate the regulations.

Marking sidewalks for pedestrians

To create more space for pedestrians, many sidewalks in Ho Chi Minh City have been marked with lines, temporarily allowing motorbikes to park for free, provided that a sidewalk of more than 1.5 meters is left according to regulations. Shortly, the department will seek opinions from households to build parking spaces and small businesses for a fee.

District 1 currently has 85 roads that are eligible for the temporary use of part of the sidewalk. According to statistics, Ho Chi Minh City has 1,238 roads with a roadway width of 7.5 m or more and 929 roads with sidewalks of 3 m or more in width. District 1 proposes a fee for temporarily using sidewalks for business at 50,000-100,000 VND/m2/month. The fee for using the roadbed for parking cars, motorbikes, and bicycles is 180,000-350,000 VND/m2/month.

It is expected that a part of the road and sidewalks will be used for parking, small businesses, and fees in 2024. Local authorities at ward and commune levels will collect opinions from people and householders with facades on these sidewalks.

BONK’s Surge Send Prices of Solana Saga Phone Flying to $2K

Advertisements

The sealed and unopened phone boxes contain an airdrop of 30 million bonk tokens, which has seemingly revived dismal Saga sales.

A dog-themed meme token may have just resurrected sales of Solana’s Saga phone – with some now selling for as much as $5,000 after earlier being deemed a “failure” by its makers.

Several Saga phones on online marketplace eBay (EBAY) have been sold for upward of $2,000 apiece, site data shows. Most of these phones are listed as “sealed and unopened,” and their sellers are predominately from the U.S.

One phone was sold for as high as $5,000, The Block earlier reported.

Sales of Solana Saga phones picked up last week as some arbitrage traders appeared to be chasing a 30 million BONK token airdrop given to every phone owner. The airdrop was worth over $700 at peak last week – for a phone that costs $599.

Earlier in November, the dog-themed BONK gained rapid popularity among blockchain users, spiking as much as 110% during one 24-hour period and extending 30-day gains to over 700%.

That seemingly lifted the fortunes of the Saga phone, whose disappointing sales prompted uncertainty about its future previously

“We haven’t seen a ton of signal whether that’s a compelling enough thing to sell 50,000 units,” Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko said during an interview at the time. “I think 25,000 to 50,000 units to feel like there is a hardcore user base for developers to be compelled to ship applications.”

The phone first went on sale earlier this year, and in August, its price was cut to $599 from $1,000.

Saga has since sold out in the U.S. and European Union, Solana co-founder Raj Gokal posted last Friday.

Bitcoin Hovers Over $41K as Memecoin, Ordinals Frenzy Clogs up Blockchains

Longs continue to get liquidated as the price of bitcoin and other major digital assets gyrate.

Bitcoin (BTC) opened the trading week marginally higher, trading above $41,000. Ether (ETH) was also up slightly, trading above $2,100.

Data from Coinglass have been $103.5 million in liquidations of token-tracked futures in the past 12 hours, and $95 million of them have been longs, or bets on higher prices. Of the $103.5 million in total liquidations, $33 million in bitcoin positions were liquidated, with $29 million of those being long bitcoin positions.

Lucy Hu, a Senior Analyst with Hong Kong-based digital asset management firm Metalpha says the broader market continues to hold up quite well despite the recent Ledger hack with rate cuts on the horizon and things like ordinals driving more interest in bitcoin.

“The massive Ledger hack did swing some sentiment in the DeFi space and raises important questions on wallet security,” she said in an email interview. “Besides, the stellar rise of Bitcoin Ordinals continues to fuel enthusiasm for Bitcoin miners, who have been heavily rewarded. We expect the long-term growth momentum of Bitcoin to remain on track.”

Predictions still optimistic

Despite bitcoin’s current correction phase, end-of-year predictions for 2024-2025 still remain optimistic, especially when compared to last year’s dour predictions of $10-12k bitcoin.

In a recent end-of-year report, Woo Network targets a $75K price point for BTC for “early 2024.” Bitwise, has a similar price target, with the fund predicting that bitcoin will trade above $80,000.

“Spot bitcoin ETFs will be approved, and collectively will be the most successful ETF launch of all time,” Bitwise also predicted. “Coinbase’s revenue will double, beating Wall Street expectations by at least 10x.”

Memecoins clogging up Layer-1s

Gas fees are spiking on Ethereum and many layer-1 chains, such as Avalanche, as dozens of new meme coins flood the market.

Avalanche has generated $5 million in fees over the last 24 hours, while Ethereum, with its significantly larger market cap, has generated $13.52 million.

Arbitrum and Optimism have also seen a large spike in gas fees during the last week.

Some of these layer-1 tokens declined faster than bitcoin or ether, with AVAX down 6% and Solana’s SOL token down 4%.

Fireworks light up the central sky of Ho Chi Minh City from the area at the beginning of the Saigon River tunnel.

As per the plan, during the 2024 Gregorian New Year, Ho Chi Minh City will launch fireworks at a high altitude at the entrance of the Saigon River tunnel in Thu Duc City, with 1,500 high-altitude shells, 30 low-altitude sets, and 10 artful sets.

Low-altitude fireworks at Dam Sen Cultural Park (District 11) will include 90 sets of low-altitude fireworks and 30 artful sets.

The fireworks display will last for 15 minutes, from midnight to 12:15 a.m. on January 1, 2024, with funding sourced from socialization.

Alongside the fireworks, Ho Chi Minh City will organize a countdown event at the moment of transitioning from the old year 2023 to the new year 2024 on Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street.

Hoi An aims to become the first ‘dog meat-free city’ in Vietnam

Advertisements

Hoi An aspires to become the first city in Vietnam where the consumption of dog meat is eliminated, as there are currently only two establishments engaged in this trade in the area.

Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hoi An City (Quang Nam Province), expresses the hope that Hoi An will be the first city in the country to completely stop the consumption of dog meat.

Mr. Hung recalls that the project sponsored by FOUR PAWS International to discourage the consumption of dog and cat meat in Hoi An has concluded. The local authorities have successfully persuaded two out of four dog meat businesses to transition their operations.

Hoi An City wants to become the first dog meat-free city in the country

“The two remaining establishments are located in Cam Pho Ward and Thanh Ha Ward. The city is focusing on raising awareness and encouraging these dog meat businesses to convert their operations in line with the project’s objectives. While the use of dog meat is not legally prohibited, it would be better not to use it, and businesses could switch to more suitable alternatives,” says Mr. Hung.

Furthermore, responsibilities related to food safety, taxes, business, and state regulations will continue to be enforced, according to Mr. Hung.

The other two dog meat businesses in the area are still undergoing efforts by the authorities to persuade them to change their occupations.

Previously, the project aimed to develop Hoi An as a pet-friendly tourist city that does not consume dog or cat meat, and it supported the eradication of rabies with assistance from FOUR PAWS International, with a total funding of over 1.1 billion VND (equivalent to 50,000 USD).

The project, implemented from September 2022 to December 2023, aimed to transform Hoi An into a pet-friendly tourist city that abstains from consuming dog and cat meat. Additionally, it sought to raise community awareness about the importance of rabies vaccination and the health risks associated with the illegal trade of dog and cat meat. The project also aimed to provide technical support and improve the vaccination rate for rabies in dogs and cats, ultimately reducing the risk of rabies in humans.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are among Euromonitor’s top 100 cities in the world. Photo: General Department of Tourism.

Global market research company Euromonitor International has recently released its list of the top 100 cities as global destinations for 2023. Vietnam has two representatives in the top 100: Ho Chi Minh City (ranked 85th) and Hanoi (ranked 98th).

According to CNN, this ranking was developed in collaboration with data company Lighthouse, evaluating leading cities worldwide based on criteria such as tourism, sustainability, economic efficiency, health, and safety.

Paris, France, takes the top spot for the third consecutive time. Europe dominates the ranking with 7 out of the top 10 cities, and 63 countries making it into the top 100.

Cities outside Europe in the top 10 include Dubai, UAE (2nd), Tokyo, Japan (4th), and New York, USA (8th). Tokyo enters the top 10 for the first time due to improved tourism infrastructure, relaxed Covid-19 regulations, and a weakening yen.

Madrid, Spain, secures the 3rd position in the ranking, while Amsterdam (Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), and Rome (Italy) are placed 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. Barcelona (Spain) and London (UK) also make it into the top 10.

Asia performs well in the top 20 with Singapore, Seoul (South Korea), Osaka (Japan), and Hong Kong all making the list.

The top 10 cities in the world for 2023 according to Euromonitor’s ranking are:

  1. Paris, France
  2. Dubai, UAE
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Tokyo, Japan
  5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
  6. Berlin, Germany
  7. Rome, Italy
  8. New York, USA
  9. Barcelona, Spain
  10. London, UK

Istanbul, Turkey, is projected to be the most visited city in the world in 2023, followed by Dubai and London. The cities with the highest annual growth in the top 100 are Hong Kong (+2,495%) and Bangkok, Thailand (+142%).

However, the surge in tourist numbers can bring mixed feelings. Alongside undeniable economic value, tourists also have negative impacts on local communities and the environment.

Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager at Euromonitor International, noted: “Some destinations are implementing restrictions, high taxes, or reducing hotel capacity to limit tourism and preserve cultural heritage. Some countries are adopting dispersal strategies to promote alternative destinations.”

She predicts that increasing living costs, fluctuating inflation, and geopolitical uncertainties will be significant obstacles to tourism growth in 2024 and 2025. Consumers will seek cost-effective travel options, and many will opt for vacations closer to home.

International visitors to Phu Quoc bustling again

Advertisements

Recently, Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Vice Chairman of the Kien Giang Tourism Association, stated that despite the difficult period due to various reasons, tourist arrivals to Phu Quoc are increasing again, and there are high expectations for a significant surge during the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2024. Particularly, after January 16, 2024, many markets such as Taiwan, China, and Mongolia will have flights to Phu Quoc.

Furthermore, some flight routes from other markets such as South Korea, Malaysia, and Hong Kong to Phu Quoc have seen an increase in frequency. Therefore, it can be predicted that from now until the end of 2023, the number of international visitors to the “pearl island” will continue to rise, making the tourism market vibrant. However, according to Mr. Huy, the current domestic flight ticket prices to Phu Quoc are quite high. This pricing is expected to impact domestic travelers visiting Phu Quoc.

“In addition, flights from Can Tho and Nha Trang to Phu Quoc have been temporarily suspended for several months. I hope that airlines will reopen these routes soon to serve domestic travelers visiting Phu Quoc for sightseeing and year-end vacations,” Mr. Huy said.

According to the report from the Kien Giang Tourism Department, in 2023, the total number of tourists visiting Kien Giang is estimated to exceed 8.5 million, an increase of 15.3% compared to the same period, surpassing the annual plan by 2.8%. International visitors accounted for nearly 600,000, a 203.3% increase compared to the same period, exceeding the annual plan by 63.8%.

To achieve the above target, Mr. Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the Kien Giang Tourism Department, mentioned that in addition to focusing on developing domestic tourism, the department has also strengthened management efforts to attract international tourists back to Phu Quoc. They encourage tourism businesses to create new products and emphasize improving service quality to meet the growing demands of tourists.

Mr. Thai added that in 2024, the tourism industry of Kien Giang province aims to welcome 9.2 million visitors, including 680,000 international tourists, with a total revenue of 20,000 billion VND.

Crypto Exchange CoinList Settles OFAC’s Russian Sanctions Allegations for $1.2M

Advertisements

CoinList did not detect users who claimed to be from non-embargoed countries, but provided addresses in Crimea, OFAC said.

Crypto exchange CoinList paid $1.2 million to settle U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control allegations it allowed users in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia, to use the platform.

CoinList “opened 89 accounts for customers, nearly all of whom had specified ‘Russia’ as their country of residence but all of whom provided addresses in Crimea upon account opening,” the OFAC notice reads. “Screening protocols failed to recognize that ‘Crimea’ or a city name in Crimea, provided in another data field, indicated likely residence in Crimea.”

Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, and most countries still see the region as part of Ukraine. The occupation led to the imposition of sanctions on Russia.

OFAC said that the fine was significantly lower than the potential maximum of nearly $327 million because of CoinList’s past compliance, cooperation and the small number of transactions involved relative to the exchange’s total volume.

“This enforcement action further emphasizes the importance for virtual currency companies and those involved in emerging technologies to incorporate risk-based sanctions compliance into their business functions, especially when the companies seek to offer financial services to a global customer base,” OFAC said in a media release.

For its part, CoinList said that it is taking this as a learning opportunity to invest in compliance.

“Our unwavering commitment to compliance is reinforced through our agreement to invest $300,000 into compliance controls – one of the largest investments made by a crypto company in our position,” the exchange said in a published statement.

CoinList is a relatively small exchange, according to CoinGecko data, with just $400,000 in daily volume, mostly with Tether and Solana pairs. Binance, the biggest exchange, records daily volumes of billions of dollars.

The exchange closed a $100 million funding round in October 2021 valuing the company at $1.5 billion.

ARK Sells $42.6M Coinbase Shares as COIN Hits 20-Month High

The firm has sold over $150 million worth of stake in COIN since Dec. 5.

Cathie Wood’s investment firm, ARK Invest, offloaded a sizeable chunk of Coinbase (COIN) as the shares of the Nasdaq-listed crypto exchange rose to a 20-month high on Wednesday.

ARK sold 283,104 shares worth $42.59 million based on Coinbase’s last close of $150.46, draining holdings from its ARK Innovation (ARKK) and ARK Next Generation Internet (ARKW) exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The firm has sold over $150 million worth of Coinbase shares since Dec. 5.

On Wednesday, COIN rose more than 7.7% to top $150 for the first time since April 2022. Despite recent sales, Coinbase still constitutes over 10% of ARK’s portfolio and retains the top spot on the investment firm’s list of top 10 holdings.

Coinbase shares have rallied by 325% this year, beating the S&P 500’s top performer and tech giant NVIDIA (NVDA) by a significant margin. NVDA has gained 226%, mainly on the back of the artificial intelligence narrative.

The investment firm also sold some $1.63 million shares of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).

According to some observers, COIN’s rally has legs, and prices could rise to $200 in the coming months.
