Global market research company Euromonitor International has recently released its list of the top 100 cities as global destinations for 2023. Vietnam has two representatives in the top 100: Ho Chi Minh City (ranked 85th) and Hanoi (ranked 98th).

According to CNN, this ranking was developed in collaboration with data company Lighthouse, evaluating leading cities worldwide based on criteria such as tourism, sustainability, economic efficiency, health, and safety.

Paris, France, takes the top spot for the third consecutive time. Europe dominates the ranking with 7 out of the top 10 cities, and 63 countries making it into the top 100.

Cities outside Europe in the top 10 include Dubai, UAE (2nd), Tokyo, Japan (4th), and New York, USA (8th). Tokyo enters the top 10 for the first time due to improved tourism infrastructure, relaxed Covid-19 regulations, and a weakening yen.

Madrid, Spain, secures the 3rd position in the ranking, while Amsterdam (Netherlands), Berlin (Germany), and Rome (Italy) are placed 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. Barcelona (Spain) and London (UK) also make it into the top 10.

Asia performs well in the top 20 with Singapore, Seoul (South Korea), Osaka (Japan), and Hong Kong all making the list.

The top 10 cities in the world for 2023 according to Euromonitor’s ranking are:

  1. Paris, France
  2. Dubai, UAE
  3. Madrid, Spain
  4. Tokyo, Japan
  5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
  6. Berlin, Germany
  7. Rome, Italy
  8. New York, USA
  9. Barcelona, Spain
  10. London, UK

Istanbul, Turkey, is projected to be the most visited city in the world in 2023, followed by Dubai and London. The cities with the highest annual growth in the top 100 are Hong Kong (+2,495%) and Bangkok, Thailand (+142%).

However, the surge in tourist numbers can bring mixed feelings. Alongside undeniable economic value, tourists also have negative impacts on local communities and the environment.

Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager at Euromonitor International, noted: “Some destinations are implementing restrictions, high taxes, or reducing hotel capacity to limit tourism and preserve cultural heritage. Some countries are adopting dispersal strategies to promote alternative destinations.”

She predicts that increasing living costs, fluctuating inflation, and geopolitical uncertainties will be significant obstacles to tourism growth in 2024 and 2025. Consumers will seek cost-effective travel options, and many will opt for vacations closer to home.

Vietjet opens direct flight Hanoi – Siem Reap

Advertisements

On December 12, Vietjet Air held the inauguration ceremony for a direct flight connecting the capital Hanoi with the heritage city of Siem Reap in Cambodia.

The event took place within the framework of the Vietnam-Cambodia Investment and Trade Promotion Forum, in the presence of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, along with leaders from various ministries, sectors, and businesses of both countries.

Vietjet General Director Dinh Viet Phuong (front row, 4th from right) received the certificate of direct flight Hanoi – Siem Reap in the presence of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet

Accordingly, the Hanoi – Siem Reap route will start serving passengers from December 15 with 7 round-trip flights per week, each leg taking 1 hour and 45 minutes. Passengers will experience convenient flights with Vietjet’s modern fleet, enjoying the rich flavors of Vietnamese cuisine such as banh mi, pho Thin, and world cuisine, served by dedicated and friendly cabin crews, along with many attractive customer care programs.

Vietjet’s new flights will land at Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, the largest airport in Cambodia, located approximately 50 km from the center of Siem Reap province and about 40 km from the Angkor archaeological site.

Congratulations and high praise to Vietjet for opening the direct Hanoi – Siem Reap route, connecting Cambodia with Vietnam. Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed the desire for more international flights in the future to further connect the two countries.

Hanoi, the heart of Vietnam, is a millennium-old capital with famous cultural and historical landmarks such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, Long Bien Bridge, and the renowned 36 ancient streets with a distinctive street food culture spanning the continents. Meanwhile, Siem Reap is a world-renowned destination with the Angkor archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Siem Reap preserves many intact architectural structures, famous global wonders, offering tourists various experiential activities, traditional art, and a culinary culture with a strong Khmer cultural imprint.

The Hanoi – Siem Reap route is expected to contribute to facilitating and promoting cooperation in investment, tourism, cultural exchange, and education between the two friendly neighboring countries, strengthening the bond between Vietnam and Cambodia. At the same time, it expands further within Vietjet’s flight network covering Vietnam, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Kazakhstan, and beyond.

International visitors to Phu Quoc bustling again

Advertisements

Recently, Mr. Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Vice Chairman of the Kien Giang Tourism Association, stated that despite the difficult period due to various reasons, tourist arrivals to Phu Quoc are increasing again, and there are high expectations for a significant surge during the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2024. Particularly, after January 16, 2024, many markets such as Taiwan, China, and Mongolia will have flights to Phu Quoc.

Furthermore, some flight routes from other markets such as South Korea, Malaysia, and Hong Kong to Phu Quoc have seen an increase in frequency. Therefore, it can be predicted that from now until the end of 2023, the number of international visitors to the “pearl island” will continue to rise, making the tourism market vibrant. However, according to Mr. Huy, the current domestic flight ticket prices to Phu Quoc are quite high. This pricing is expected to impact domestic travelers visiting Phu Quoc.

“In addition, flights from Can Tho and Nha Trang to Phu Quoc have been temporarily suspended for several months. I hope that airlines will reopen these routes soon to serve domestic travelers visiting Phu Quoc for sightseeing and year-end vacations,” Mr. Huy said.

According to the report from the Kien Giang Tourism Department, in 2023, the total number of tourists visiting Kien Giang is estimated to exceed 8.5 million, an increase of 15.3% compared to the same period, surpassing the annual plan by 2.8%. International visitors accounted for nearly 600,000, a 203.3% increase compared to the same period, exceeding the annual plan by 63.8%.

To achieve the above target, Mr. Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the Kien Giang Tourism Department, mentioned that in addition to focusing on developing domestic tourism, the department has also strengthened management efforts to attract international tourists back to Phu Quoc. They encourage tourism businesses to create new products and emphasize improving service quality to meet the growing demands of tourists.

Mr. Thai added that in 2024, the tourism industry of Kien Giang province aims to welcome 9.2 million visitors, including 680,000 international tourists, with a total revenue of 20,000 billion VND.

Crypto Exchange CoinList Settles OFAC’s Russian Sanctions Allegations for $1.2M

Advertisements

CoinList did not detect users who claimed to be from non-embargoed countries, but provided addresses in Crimea, OFAC said.

Crypto exchange CoinList paid $1.2 million to settle U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control allegations it allowed users in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia, to use the platform.

CoinList “opened 89 accounts for customers, nearly all of whom had specified ‘Russia’ as their country of residence but all of whom provided addresses in Crimea upon account opening,” the OFAC notice reads. “Screening protocols failed to recognize that ‘Crimea’ or a city name in Crimea, provided in another data field, indicated likely residence in Crimea.”

Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, and most countries still see the region as part of Ukraine. The occupation led to the imposition of sanctions on Russia.

OFAC said that the fine was significantly lower than the potential maximum of nearly $327 million because of CoinList’s past compliance, cooperation and the small number of transactions involved relative to the exchange’s total volume.

“This enforcement action further emphasizes the importance for virtual currency companies and those involved in emerging technologies to incorporate risk-based sanctions compliance into their business functions, especially when the companies seek to offer financial services to a global customer base,” OFAC said in a media release.

For its part, CoinList said that it is taking this as a learning opportunity to invest in compliance.

“Our unwavering commitment to compliance is reinforced through our agreement to invest $300,000 into compliance controls – one of the largest investments made by a crypto company in our position,” the exchange said in a published statement.

CoinList is a relatively small exchange, according to CoinGecko data, with just $400,000 in daily volume, mostly with Tether and Solana pairs. Binance, the biggest exchange, records daily volumes of billions of dollars.

The exchange closed a $100 million funding round in October 2021 valuing the company at $1.5 billion.

ARK Sells $42.6M Coinbase Shares as COIN Hits 20-Month High

Advertisements

The firm has sold over $150 million worth of stake in COIN since Dec. 5.

Cathie Wood’s investment firm, ARK Invest, offloaded a sizeable chunk of Coinbase (COIN) as the shares of the Nasdaq-listed crypto exchange rose to a 20-month high on Wednesday.

ARK sold 283,104 shares worth $42.59 million based on Coinbase’s last close of $150.46, draining holdings from its ARK Innovation (ARKK) and ARK Next Generation Internet (ARKW) exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The firm has sold over $150 million worth of Coinbase shares since Dec. 5.

On Wednesday, COIN rose more than 7.7% to top $150 for the first time since April 2022. Despite recent sales, Coinbase still constitutes over 10% of ARK’s portfolio and retains the top spot on the investment firm’s list of top 10 holdings.

Coinbase shares have rallied by 325% this year, beating the S&P 500’s top performer and tech giant NVIDIA (NVDA) by a significant margin. NVDA has gained 226%, mainly on the back of the artificial intelligence narrative.

The investment firm also sold some $1.63 million shares of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).

According to some observers, COIN’s rally has legs, and prices could rise to $200 in the coming months.

Total Value of Cardano DeFi Ecosystem Nears $450M Amid Layer 1 Push; ADA Rockets 17%

Advertisements

The total value locked (TVL) of all Cardano-based tokens jumped to over $440 million late earlier this week, crossing the previous peak of $330 million set in April.

Value locked on Cardano’s ecosystem grew rapidly in the past few weeks as a recent boost in Ethereum alternatives, such as Solana and Avalanche, is likely pushing crypto investors and users toward other blockchains in search of returns and capital allocation.

The total value locked (TVL) of all Cardano-based projects jumped to over $440 million late earlier this week, crossing a previous peak of $330 million set in April. Most growth seemingly occurred over the past week, with lending protocol Indigo and on-chain exchange Minswap seeing their TVL surge by over 50% to nearly $100 million each.

Djed DJED stablecoin, a token pegged to the U.S. dollar, saw a supply increase of over 45% in the past week – indicative of capital inflows toward the token as investors looked to capitalize on yields.

Meanwhile, value locked on relatively smaller protocols LendFi and Spectrum Finance, has surged by 90%, suggesting users were starting to take riskier bets.

Such on-chain growth has boosted the price of Cardano’s ADA token, which is used to pay for network activity. The tokens surged some 17% in the past 24 hours, helping extend monthly gains to nearly 80%, data shows, and a 100% growth in leveraged futures bets on further ADA price volatility in the same period.

As such, Cardano’s DeFi ecosystem has surged alongside those of other blockchains.

The total amount of capital locked or staked across all decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols reached $50 billion at the start of December for the first time in six months, led by Solana ecosystem protocols as optimism around the blockchain has picked up in recent weeks.

Da Nang International Terminal achieved “Welcome Chinese” certification

Advertisements

Da Nang City’s Department of Tourism recently announced that the Da Nang International Terminal has become the first airport terminal in Southeast Asia to receive a Welcome Chinese certification. This certification is a testament to the station’s dedication to understanding and meeting the needs of Chinese tourists. The airport terminal, also known as Terminal T2, has been awarded a Gold ranking, which is the highest of the three grades of the Welcome Chinese certificate issued by the Beijing-based research organization, China Tourism Academy.

Italy has four airports certified “Welcome Chinese,” while France, Russia, Spain, and Saudi Arabia each have one airport certified. The Da Nang International Terminal achieved this certification by implementing items such as displaying the Chinese language on signage, flight display screens, restaurant menus, maps, and websites. Additionally, the terminal provides free hot water, Chinese-speaking staff, and payment services via UnionPay and WeChat Pay. They also have tax refund counters, making it even more convenient for Chinese tourists.

According to Mr. Do Trong Hau, the Deputy General Director of Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation Joint Stock Company (AHT), the airport terminal is an essential gateway and the first touchpoint for international tourists visiting Da Nang. This certification will help strengthen the station’s image and Da Nang’s reputation as a welcoming and convenient destination for Chinese tourists. Furthermore, it will contribute to promoting and bringing local tourism services closer to this significant market.

Since reopening after the pandemic, the Da Nang International Terminal has made many upgrades, including infrastructure improvements, green space renovation, process optimization, and the development of a suitable utility ecosystem for Muslim target groups, Chinese, and Korean tourists.

Increase slots at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports during Tet

Advertisements

Recently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has made decisions to adjust the parameters for coordinating takeoff and landing procedures and flight operations services at Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2024.

Accordingly, the adjusted parameters for coordinating takeoff and landing procedures and flight operations services during the period from January 25, 2024, to February 24, 2024, are 40 slots per hour during the time frames from 06:00 to 23:55 (local time) at Noi Bai International Airport.

The parameters for coordinating slots at Tan Son Nhat International Airport have been increased to 44 slots per hour during the daytime hours (06:00-23:55) and 40 slots per hour during the nighttime hours (00:00-05:55) local time.

Previously, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam conducted a Slot Council meeting to review and adjust the parameters for coordinating slots at Noi Bai International Airport, Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and some other airports during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2024.

Additionally, to meet the increased travel demand of the public, especially during the Lunar New Year period, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam issued Directive No. 6881/CT-CHK on December 1, 2023, regarding ensuring traffic order and safety during the New Year, Lunar New Year, and the Spring Festival of the Year of the Tiger 2024.

Accordingly, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has requested Vietnamese airlines to coordinate with airports to report plans for Tet service, especially plans to increase flights during nighttime hours and plans for the operation and overnight parking of aircraft fleets so that airports and ground service units can arrange and organize resources effectively, particularly in allocating parking positions for overnight aircraft.

For the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, airports, and service providers, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has requested these entities to be ready to allocate all resources in terms of equipment and personnel to best serve the needs of the public during the Lunar New Year of the Tiger 2024. This includes enhancing services for nighttime flights to and from local airports to ensure the quality of aviation services and prevent congestion at airports, causing inconvenience to passengers.

Airlines have already opened sales for additional domestic flights during the peak period of the Lunar New Year 2024. People can now book airline tickets through the websites of airlines or through applications such as Viettel Money.

The airline temporarily suspends operations on several domestic routes to Phu Quoc

Advertisements

Currently, Phu Quoc Airport only operates domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hai Phong.

Sharing with Znews, Mr. Nguyen Minh Dong, Director of Phu Quoc International Airport, mentioned that many domestic flight routes to Phu Quoc have temporarily ceased operations for several months.

At this time, Phu Quoc Airport only has domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hai Phong.

Airlines have temporarily suspended routes from Da Nang, Can Tho, Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa) to Phu Quoc.

Earlier, Bamboo Airways announced the withdrawal from many domestic and international routes, including the Can Tho – Phu Quoc segment, as part of their restructuring process. This was the only airline operating this route due to low passenger numbers and lack of appeal to other carriers.

In this context, the average number of domestic transit passengers through Phu Quoc Airport is about 3,000 passengers per day.

Meanwhile, international flights to Phu Quoc include routes from South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Shanghai, with an average of 1,700 passengers per day.

According to statistics, in the first 5 months of this year, Phu Quoc Airport had around 160,000-170,000 domestic passengers per day, increasing significantly during the summer months of July and August with over 200,000 passengers per day. However, passenger numbers have shown a steep decline of 30-50% in the past 3 months.

From the beginning of the year until now, Phu Quoc Airport has welcomed a total of nearly 4 million domestic and international passengers, achieving only 69.1% of the plan to receive 5.7 million passengers. The mentioned passenger numbers increased by 16% compared to 2019 but decreased by 25% compared to the same period in 2022.

Currently, the ticket prices for the Ho Chi Minh City – Phu Quoc route are in the range of 2.1-2.5 million VND per ticket, a reduction of 500,000 to 1 million VND compared to the summer period.

The Hanoi – Phu Quoc route is priced at 2.8-3 million VND for a round-trip ticket. This price has decreased by about 50% compared to the peak period at 5-7 million VND for a round-trip ticket. Similarly, the price for the Hai Phong – Phu Quoc route is also significantly reduced to around 2.1-2.4 million VND for a round-trip ticket.
