SEC approval of a U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETF could result in inflows of as much as $30 billion, a report by the crypto services provider said.
The connection between gold and bitcoin (BTC) as stores of value is obvious, and the demand for BTC as a digital store of value was a big reason why the cryptocurrency grew in popularity, crypto services provider Matrixport said in a report Monday.
Bitcoin’s market capitalization is $540 billion, equivalent to 10.8% of the market cap of physical financial gold, Matrixport said, adding that gold exchange-traded-funds (ETFs) are valued at $200 billion.
This is why potential approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of a U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETF could result in inflows of $20 – $30 billion, potentially triggering a large rally in the cryptocurrency, the report said.
The SEC has dragged its heels on approving a spot bitcoin ETF, and in August said it was delaying its decision on all new applications until October. The crypto market is hopeful that such an approval will trigger a flood of mainstream money into the sector.
Still, bitcoin has an edge over gold as the private keys can be memorized, which eliminates the risk of confiscation, the report said.
“Even today, storing assets in the form of gold has not only become unfashionable in the digital age, but comes with significant restrictions when crossing borders,” wrote Markus Thielen, head of research at Matrixport, adding that “bitcoin offers a solution to this dilemma, enabling the swift and relatively inconspicuous movement of value across borders.”
“Therefore, considering the current state of technological developments, bitcoin’s primary roles are likely as a store of value akin to gold and a speculative financial asset,” the report added.
The firm registered with the Financial Conduct Authority just before new ad rules took effect on Sunday.
Komainu, a crypto custody joint venture of Nomura, Ledger and CoinShares, has successfully registered with the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority.
The company landed on the FCA register on Friday just before the regulator’s new promotions rules came into effect over the weekend. The rules require firms to be registered in the U.K. to be able to approve their own ads and convey appropriate risk warnings to users. Not complying with the rules could mean up to two years of imprisonment.
FCA-registered crypto firms are required to comply with the country’s anti-money laundering rules. There are 42 firms on the register, but at the beginning of the year, the regulator said it had received 300 applications from firms since it opened the registration regime in 2021.
Some unregistered companies have withdrawn certain services or stopped serving some clients in response to the new ad rules, while others, like Binance, are relying on other companies to approve their ads. Coinbase added risk disclaimers to its website, the firm said in an email to CoinDesk, while OKX announced modifications such as reducing its token offerings in the country.
The FCA didn’t waste any time updating its list of unauthorized firms, adding more than 100 firms – including KuCoin and Houbi – to its warning list on Sunday.

According to legal experts, when foreigners commit crimes in Vietnam, the Penal Code also specifies a distinct penalty: deportation. Deportation can either serve as the primary punishment or an additional consequence, depending on the circumstances.
Recently, the Criminal Police Department (PC02) in Ho Chi Minh City successfully dismantled a prostitution ring headed by Son Teaheum, a 47-year-old Korean national who owns the Luxury Business Club restaurant.
Initially, Son Teaheum admitted that his pursuit of profit led him to instruct the Korean manager and some Vietnamese women to involve the female hostesses from his restaurant in prostitution activities with customers. This strategy was aimed at luring customers and generating monthly revenues in the tens of billions of Vietnamese dong.
To evade surveillance by the authorities, the suspects excluded Vietnamese patrons and exclusively facilitated Korean guests to dine, drink, and engage in sexual transactions with the female flight attendants.
The suspects continuously altered their methods of running the prostitution operation, frequently conducting clandestine meetings, providing management directives, and employing various tactics to conceal their illegal activities. Moreover, the ringleaders regularly organized additional security personnel and implemented stringent patrols, even altering the symbols used to denote prostitution on the bills.
Responding to reports of this incident, Vietnam Insider raised a fundamental question: Are foreigners who commit crimes on Vietnamese soil subject to criminal prosecution in accordance with Vietnamese law?
Lawyer Quach Thanh Luc, Director of the Rule of Law Law Firm and a member of the Hanoi Bar Association, clarified that in this case, the police will determine whether Son Teaheum is entitled to diplomatic or consular immunity. If not, he will face the same legal penalties as Vietnamese citizens who commit offenses under Vietnamese law.
This matter is explicitly outlined in the 2015 Penal Code, which was subsequently amended and supplemented in 2017. Clause 2, Article 5 of this code addresses the issue of foreigners committing crimes within the Socialist Republic of Vietnam:
“For foreigners who commit crimes on the territory of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, they are subject to diplomatic or consular immunity as per Vietnamese law and in accordance with international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a party. If Vietnam is a member or adheres to international conventions, their criminal liability will be determined based on the provisions of said international treaty or international practice. In cases where the international treaty does not specify regulations or if there is no international precedent, their criminal liability will be resolved through diplomatic means.
In the event that Son Teaheum does not qualify for diplomatic or consular immunity, he will be subject to legal proceedings in accordance with Vietnamese law.
The fighting spirit of the Ukrainian military appears to be waning, with a significant rise in desertions among soldiers on the frontlines.
This unsettling trend is attributed to a combination of factors, including substantial casualties and the growing weariness experienced by those engaged in the conflict, as reported by Samid Basha, an analyst with the English edition of the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
Basha pointed out that there is a concerning escalation in stress levels and mental health issues among Ukrainian soldiers, leading to an alarming reluctance to engage in battle. This decline in morale is directly linked to the surge in desertions. Notably, in early June, Ukrainian border guards were apprehending as many as 20 individuals attempting to flee daily.
Romanian immigration authorities reported that since the commencement of the conflict, over 6,200 men have crossed the border into Ukraine illegally, while an additional 20,000 individuals sought refuge in the country through official channels, often exploiting irregular permits.
One of the key contributors to this erosion of morale is the high rate of casualties, coupled with the absence of adequate rest due to the lack of rotation. Additionally, the subpar accuracy of artillery and missile strikes, which frequently result in accidental incidents, has further undermined the confidence and determination of Ukraine’s armed forces.
Basha also noted that Ukraine has suffered significant losses among its well-trained military personnel, leaving the nation heavily reliant on inadequately trained recruits to fill the ranks. This shift has further exacerbated the challenges faced by Ukraine’s armed forces.
In a shocking turn of events, a Saigon restaurant with 200 hostesses providing sexual services to foreign customers has been exposed. Son Teaheum, the owner of the Luxury Business Club restaurant and a South Korean national, stands accused of orchestrating this illicit operation, involving nearly 200 beautiful hostesses in sexy dances and prostitution services for foreign patrons.
On October 7th, a major operation unfolded as Son Teaheum, aged 47, along with Khong Minh Tri and eight others, were apprehended by the Ho Chi Minh City Criminal Police Department (PC02). They are facing serious charges related to facilitating prostitution and running a brothel.
This sordid affair came to light when investigators uncovered a network of foreigners organizing prostitution activities within the Lucxury Business Club restaurant, located on Pham Thai Buong Street in District 7. The four-story establishment, housing 28 rooms and employing almost 200 female hostesses, primarily catered to Korean clientele. Notably, all customers were required to show their passports or be introduced by acquaintances to gain entry.
After an extensive surveillance period, culminating on the night of October 3rd, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hung, Chief of the Criminal Police Department, led a team of detectives in coordination with District 7 police. They executed a strategic operation to surround the Lucxury Business Club restaurant, swiftly taking control and confiscating the security guards’ communication devices. During their search, authorities discovered numerous hostesses provocatively dressed and entertaining customers in several rooms on the upper floors. Additionally, they uncovered various documents containing numerical symbols “0, 1, 2,” suspected to be used as prostitution invoices.
Simultaneously, the police apprehended four South Koreans and four hostesses from the Lucxury restaurant engaging in prostitution at a hotel on Phan Khiem Ich Street, Tan Phong Ward. Shockingly, these individuals confessed that the restaurant’s management had dispatched them to serve customers at prices ranging from 3 to 5 million dong.
As investigations continue, the scandal has sent shockwaves through Saigon, with authorities vowing to bring all those involved to justice. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

In addition to upgrading the infrastructure and establishing coordination regulations between two provinces and cities (Hai Phong – Quang Ninh) for the exploitation and preservation of the World Natural Heritage of Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, Hai Phong plans to increase the entrance fees for Lan Ha Bay to be on par with the entrance fees for Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh) because the current entrance fees in Hai Phong are much lower.
On October 6, Deputy Director of Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports Trinh Van Tu said that the city is proposing to raise the fee to visit the World Natural Heritage Cat Ba archipelago to be equal to the fee to visit Ha Long Bay (Quang Nam). Ninh) because Hai Phong’s current entrance fee is much lower.
Lan Ha Bay belongs to the Cat Ba archipelago, Cat Hai District (Hai Phong City) currently has a lower entrance fee than the fee that Quang Ninh province is applying to Ha Long Bay.
However, according to Mr. Tu, there is no specific time limit for increasing the entrance fee, we must wait for the City People’s Council to meet, give opinions, and pass a resolution.
While waiting for the People’s Council to approve the new entrance fees, Hai Phong will focus on addressing several key tasks related to the development of tourism in the Cat Ba Archipelago World Natural Heritage. These tasks include resolving traffic congestion issues at the Got Ferry Terminal during peak tourism periods, investing in the construction of the Binh Wharf passenger terminal, collaborating with Quang Ninh province to upgrade the Gia Luan – Tuan Chau ferry route, expediting the progress of cable car projects and related entertainment areas on Cat Ba Island, and emphasizing the development of tourism plans aligned with heritage preservation.
Furthermore, Hai Phong will restructure the Management Board of the Cat Ba Archipelago World Natural Heritage by integrating various units, including the Cat Ba National Park, the Management Board of the bays within the Cat Ba Archipelago, and the Cat Ba Archipelago Biosphere Reserve, into a unified entity to ensure effective management and the promotion of heritage value.
A corner of Lan Ha Bay viewed from above
According to Mr. Tu, since Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago spans two provinces and one city, there won’t be a single unified management board. However, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh are working on unified regulations for heritage management, protection, tour routes, and tourism service prices.
Currently, the entrance fee for Lan Ha Bay is 80,000 VND per person per trip, while at Ha Long Bay, it ranges from 200,000 to 250,000 VND (depending on the route). Overnight fees on Lan Ha Bay range from 250,000 to 500,000 VND per person, while at Ha Long Bay, they are between 550,000 and 750,000 VND per person.
Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago comprises a total of 1,133 small and large islands, with Ha Long Bay having 775 islands and Cat Ba Archipelago having 358 islands. The total area of the World Heritage site’s core zone is 65,650 hectares, with a buffer zone covering 34,140 hectares.
Previously, on September 16, 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially recognized Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago as a World Natural Heritage site.
The bus service that picks up passengers at the airport plays a crucial role in ensuring transportation needs are met and serves various groups of people, including the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. Therefore, the Public Transportation Management Center suggests waiving the entry and exit fees for this mode of transportation at the airport.
The Public Transportation Management Center of Ho Chi Minh City has recently submitted a proposal to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation to request Tan Son Nhat International Airport to exempt the entry and exit fees for public transportation vehicles and bus routes, whether subsidized or not.
Furthermore, they are considering allocating a designated area within the domestic terminal for convenient passenger pick-up and drop-off, as well as arranging parking and passenger services for the upcoming electric bus route at the airport, which is the Vinhomes Grand Park – Tan Son Nhat Airport route (operated by Vinbus).
Passengers catch the bus at Tan Son Nhat airport
According to the center, there are currently four bus routes connecting the international and domestic terminals at Tan Son Nhat Airport, with two subsidized routes and two non-subsidized routes. These four bus routes collectively perform around 300 trips per day, transporting 3,300 passengers. The passenger volume on these bus routes has increased compared to 2022.
However, the current challenge is that the bus pick-up and drop-off area at the domestic terminal is frequently occupied by private vehicles, making it difficult for buses to access passengers, especially those with luggage. Additionally, the placement of two pick-up and drop-off locations in lane B of the domestic terminal does not create a centralized passenger point and lacks informational signage, making it challenging for passengers to access.
Furthermore, the non-subsidized bus routes operating at Tan Son Nhat Airport incur expenses for entering and exiting the toll booth and for passenger pick-up and drop-off at both the international and domestic terminals, similar to other forms of passenger transportation. This creates difficulties for transportation service providers.

The Japanese Embassy guides how to register for an electronic visa for Vietnamese tourists
According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization, Vietnamese visitors to Japan during the first 8 months of 2023 ranked among the top 10 largest source markets.
Specifically, Vietnamese tourists ranked 7th, following South Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the United States, and ahead of the Philippines, Australia, and Singapore. In August 2023, Vietnamese arrivals in Japan reached 50,000, a 16.5% increase compared to the same period in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Over the course of 8 months, Japan welcomed 397,000 Vietnamese tourists, marking a 17.4% increase compared to the same period in 2019.
Of particular interest is that among the top 10 largest source markets for Japan in the past 8 months, Vietnamese tourists showed the highest growth rate at 17.4% compared to pre-pandemic levels. In the top 10, only three source markets for Japan saw growth compared to pre-pandemic levels, including Vietnam (17.4%), Singapore (16.8%), and the United States (14%). Other important markets for Japan, such as China (81% decrease), Thailand (28% decrease), Taiwan (22% decrease), Australia (13% decrease), and South Korea (8.6% decrease), saw declines.
Vietnamese tourists return to Japan in large numbers after the pandemic
Conversely, Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam numbered around 414,000 in the first 9 months of 2023, ranking 5th among the largest international source markets but declining by approximately 50% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Vietnam has granted visa exemptions to Japan, unilaterally, along with South Korea, Italy, Germany, France, and others. Since August 15, visitors from these countries can stay in Vietnam for 45 days without a visa, instead of the previous 15-day limit.
Android smartphone users no longer have the privilege of watching movies for free on Netflix; they must subscribe if they wish to continue accessing content on the platform.
In early October 2023, many Netflix subscribers in Vietnam started receiving notifications about “upcoming changes to the membership status of the service” through the email addresses they had registered for their free accounts on this online streaming platform. According to this announcement, the free policy for smartphone Android subscribers will cease to exist starting from November 1, 2023.
After that date, current account holders will no longer be members of this service and won’t be able to continue using it unless they upgrade to a paid subscription, which starts at 70,000 Vietnamese dong per month. Users who wish to cancel their subscription don’t need to take any action; the company will automatically revoke their membership when the free viewing program ends.
Netflix stops free packages, Vietnamese users have the option to sign up for a subscription with prices from 70,000 VND/month
The free subscription was introduced in November 2021 but was exclusively available to Android smartphone users. Vietnam is the second market in the world to benefit from this offer, following Kenya. The free subscription came with certain limitations, such as access only to Netflix Original content and other restricted content, along with lower resolution suitable only for smartphone screens. Users also couldn’t use this type of account on devices other than Android smartphones.
The free service has stopped accepting new member registrations after being in place for two years. This change is believed to be part of Netflix’s plan to boost revenue and the number of subscribers on the platform.
Since July 2023, Netflix has tightened its account sharing policy in Vietnam. Many TV service users have been required to verify that they live with the account owner to continue accessing desired content. Shared accounts are identified through IP addresses and device IDs, as well as user activity. Therefore, if not residing with the account owner, profiles will receive constant verification prompts whenever they want to watch a movie.
The previous tightening of policies has yielded significant results on a global scale. Netflix’s financial report for July showed that in the second quarter of 2023, they gained an additional 5.9 million new accounts, with the US and Canada experiencing the most growth since 2021.
