Request airlines to report Tet flight plans and ticket prices

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAA Vietnam) has requested airlines to report on market demand, operational plans, and capacity increase on specific routes during the peak Lunar New Year period in 2024.

CAA Vietnam, under the Ministry of Transport, has issued a communication to airlines including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, and Vietravel Airlines regarding their operational plans and preparations for the high-demand period during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Rat in 2024.

In order to proactively serve the transportation needs of the people, cargo transport, and ensure order and safety during the peak Lunar New Year period in 2024 (from January 25, 2024, to February 24, 2024, equivalent to the 15th day of the twelfth lunar month to the 15th day of the first lunar month), CAA Vietnam has requested Vietnamese airlines to report on market demand, operational plans, and slot utilization needs during this peak period.

Additionally, these entities are required to report plans for capacity increases on specific flight routes during the Lunar New Year peak period, comparing and evaluating with the previous year’s Lunar New Year period, and making recommendations (if any) related to capacity increases on these routes during this period.

In reality, even though Tet (Lunar New Year) in 2024 is nearly four months away, flight ticket prices are already scarce and soaring, especially on some crowded routes such as Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Vinh (Nghe An), Quang Binh, or from Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City to tourist destinations like Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Da Lat.

Specifically, the peak of ticket price tension falls between February 4th and February 8th, 2024, which is from the 25th to the 29th of the Lunar New Year, when flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and from February 13th to February 22nd, 2024, which is from the 4th of the Lunar New Year to near the Full Moon of the first lunar month when flying from Hanoi. Flight ticket prices during this period range from 4.8 to 5.8 million VND round trip (including taxes and fees) with Vietjet Air, while other airlines, including Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Vietravel Airlines, have ticket prices reaching up to 7 million VND.

On some routes from Ho Chi Minh City to bring laborers and workers back to Thanh Hoa, Vinh (Nghe An) for Tet, ticket prices have risen to 6.7-7 million VND round trip.

Meanwhile, the demand and ticket prices for flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to tourist destinations during Tet have also increased significantly.

Flight ticket prices for flights on February 11, 2024 (the 2nd day of Tet) and return flights on February 14, 2024 (the 5th day of Tet) from Hanoi to Phu Quoc are at their highest, ranging from 6.8 to over 8.3 million VND round trip (including taxes and fees). Ticket prices on other routes are also high, such as Hanoi to Nha Trang/Da Lat from 5-7 million VND, and to Da Nang from 3.3-5 million VND.

From Ho Chi Minh City, Tet flight ticket prices are slightly lower, with Phu Quoc routes ranging from 3.7-3.9 million VND round trip, Nha Trang from only 2.8 million VND, but flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang are as high as 4.9 million VND.

Ethereum Has Become More Centralized Since the Merge and Shanghai Upgrades: JPMorgan

The increase in staking has reduced the appeal of ether from a yield perspective, the report said.

The rise in ether (ETH) staking since the Merge and Shanghai upgrades has come at a cost to Ethereum as the network has become more centralized and the overall staking yield has fallen, JPMorgan (JPM) said in a research report on Thursday.

“Many in the crypto community had seen Lido, a decentralized liquid staking platform as a better alternative compared to the centralized liquid staking platforms associated with centralized exchanges,” analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou wrote.

Lido has been adding more node operators to contain the number of staked ether being controlled by any single operator, to address centralization concerns, the Wall Street bank noted.

Still, centralization by any entity or protocol creates risks for Ethereum as a “concentrated number of liquidity providers or node operators could act as a single point of failure or become targets for attacks or collude to create an oligopoly that would promote their own interests at the expense of the interests of the community,” the report added.

An added risk from the rise of liquid staking is rehypothecation, the bank said. This is when liquidity tokens are reused as collateral across numerous decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols at the same time. DeFi is an umbrella term used for lending, trading and other financial activities carried out on a blockchain.

“Rehypothecation could then result in a cascade of liquidations if a staked asset drops sharply in value or is hacked or slashed due to malicious attack or a protocol error,” the note said.

The increase in staking has also reduced the appeal of ether from a “yield perspective,” especially given the backdrop of rising yields in traditional financial assets, the report added. The total staking yield has dropped from 7.3% before the Shanghai upgrade to about 5.5%.

Data shows that broader crypto markets lost just under 1% in the past 24 hours.

Bitcoin (BTC) could be at risk of a short-term reversal following recent price bumps, while the dismal performance of ether (ETH) futures exchange-traded funds (ETF) weighed down on crypto majors.

“Bitcoin continues to tend to sell on growth, failing to make a fresh attack on the 200-day moving average,” FxPro senior market analyst Alex Kuptsikevich said in a note to CoinDesk. “Bitcoin has recently outperformed the stock market but is now retreating against the buying in the indices.”

“In the short term, bitcoin seems more at risk of falling than rising,” the trader said, adding ether’s bearish performance did little to boost confidence in top tokens.

Ether and bitcoin were buoyed to one-month highs last week as six ETH ETFs went live in the U.S. earlier on Monday, with traders expecting high demand for the products.

However, their performance told a different story. Less than $2 million were traded across the various ETFs on Monday, with poor volumes throughout the week prompting analysts to write down their bullish outlook and pivot to bitcoin investments instead.

Such sentiment weighed on prices, with ether losing nearly all gains since the past week, while bitcoin has generally hovered above support levels.

Crypto majors moved little in the past 24 hours after profit taking earlier this week and a lack of catalysts. Bitcoin slumped 0.5%, ether slipped 1%, while XRP and BNB Chain’s BNB were little changed.

Cardano’s ADA tokens were the only majors in green with a 2.2% price bump. Elsewhere, toncoin (TON) surged 8.8% on no immediately apparent catalyst, while Avalanche’s AVAX tokens continued gains from earlier this week with a 4% jump.

In August 2023, Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 50,000, an increase of 16.5% compared to the same period in 2019 before the pandemic. From November 1, 2023, the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi will issue electronic visas to Vietnamese tourists.

It is worth noting that among the top 10 largest tourist markets in Japan, Vietnamese visitors showed the highest growth rate of 17.4% compared to the pre-pandemic period. Out of the top 10 markets, only three showed an increase in visitors to Japan compared to before the pandemic: Vietnam, Singapore (16.8%), and the US (14%).

On the other hand, Japanese visitors to Vietnam are expected to reach approximately 414,000 in the first 9 months of 2023, ranking 5th in the top international tourist market but showing a decline of about 50% compared to 2019 before the pandemic. Vietnam unilaterally exempts visas for Japan and 12 other countries, including South Korea, Italy, Germany, and France. As of August 15, visitors from these countries can stay visa-free for 45 days instead of the previous 15 days under the old regulations.

Railway industry to sell collective tickets for Lunar New Year from October 15

According to the Vietnam News Agency (TTXVN), the Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) will start selling group tickets for the 2024 Lunar New Year from October 15th to October 22nd. Priority for group train ticket sales will be given to units within the armed forces, universities, colleges, industrial zones, export processing zones, social organizations, and entities within the railway sector.

Regarding the number of tickets that can be registered for group purchase, customers can register for both the outbound and return trips, with a minimum of 5 tickets per trip. The railway sector advises that those wishing to register for group tickets should bring an introduction letter, a list of ticket purchases, and summary sheets for outbound and return trips when they come to the stations to register.

Currently, the North-South railway line is operated with four pairs of Thong Nhat trains: SE1/SE2, SE3/SE4, SE5/SE6, SE7/SE8; one pair of Saigon – Nha Trang trains SNT1/SNT2, one pair of Saigon – Da Nang trains SE21/SE22, and one pair of Saigon – Phan Thiet trains SPT1/SPT2.

Vietnam welcomes over 1 million international visitors for the third consecutive month

In September, Vietnam welcomed over 1 million international tourists. This also marks the third consecutive month that our tourism industry has received over 1 million foreign visitors.

The arrival of over 1 million tourists in September has helped Vietnam’s tourism sector welcome a total of 8.9 million international visitors in the first nine months of this year, surpassing the annual target of 8 million. The total revenue for the entire industry reached 536.5 trillion Vietnamese dong.

In terms of market scale, among the top 10 source markets in the first nine months of the year, South Korea ranked first with nearly 2.6 million arrivals, accounting for 29% of the total. China followed with over 1 million arrivals.

However, when considering the recovery rate compared to the pre-pandemic period (2019), the Chinese market has only achieved a 28% recovery rate. Before the pandemic, China accounted for nearly one-third of the total international visitors to Vietnam. From 2015 to 2019, the number of Chinese tourists to Vietnam increased 3.3 times, from 1.78 million to 5.8 million.

Notably, some markets have even exceeded their pre-pandemic levels, such as Thailand (102%), Singapore (106%), and Cambodia (267%). In the South Asian region, the Indian market has also shown an impressive recovery rate (240%).

The National Tourism Administration believes that as the tourism industry enters the peak international travel season in the final months of the year and takes advantage of opportunities from the new visa waiver policy and the issuance of electronic visas, which took effect from August 15, they expect the number of international tourists coming to Vietnam to continue to increase rapidly in the near future.

After its release, the film created a box office frenzy among Vietnamese audiences. Furthermore, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts being appointed as Vietnam’s Tourism Ambassador brought even more attention to “Kong: Skull Island.” Prior to that, in 2015, Hạ Long Bay appeared in the Hollywood-produced film “Pan and the Land of Neverland.”

Being chosen as the setting for famous films is a great opportunity to promote Hạ Long Bay tourism to a global audience.

Recently, on September 16, 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognized the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago complex, located in Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city, as a World Natural Heritage Site. Previously, Ha Long Bay had been twice recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1994 and 2000.

New Year’s Eve has 3 days off

On January 1, 2024, which falls on a Monday, combined with the two weekend days, workers will have a three-day consecutive holiday for the New Year’s Day.

The Labor Law stipulates a one-day holiday for New Year’s Day. Since January 1, 2024, is a Monday, and when adding the two weekend days, workers will have a three-day holiday in a row.

After over a month of celebrating the Gregorian New Year, workers will have the Lunar New Year holiday. The Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA) is proposing a 7-day holiday for the Lunar New Year and has put forward two options for consultation with other ministries before presenting it to the Government.

Option 1: Civil servants and public employees will have a holiday from Thursday, February 8th, to Wednesday, February 14th, 2024 (from the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Quy Mao to the 5th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Giap Thin).

Under this option, civil servants and public employees will have a 7-day holiday (including 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 days to compensate for the regular days off).

Employees are entitled to 3 days off for New Year’s Day.

Option 2: MOLISA proposes a 1-day holiday before Tet and 4 days after Tet. Accordingly, civil servants and public employees will have a holiday from Friday, February 9th, to Thursday, February 15th, 2024 (from the 30th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Quy Mao to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Giap Thin).

Under this second option, during the Lunar New Year holiday, civil servants and public employees will also have a 7-day holiday (including 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 days to compensate for the regular days off).

According to MOLISA, both options offer the same number of holiday days, but the ministry suggests choosing option 1 for better balancing the time off before and after the holiday.

MOLISA stated that the actual conditions and holiday schedules for civil servants, public employees, and employers will be considered when planning for the Lunar New Year holiday.

The government encourages businesses to apply the same holiday schedule for workers as for civil servants.

DeFi Project Yield Protocol to Wind Down by Year’s End

At its peak in April 2022, the DeFi lending project had over $22 million in total value locked, but this figure has since dropped to around $2 million.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) lending project Yield Protocol is set to wind down by the end of this year due to a lack of demand and regulatory challenges.

The project’s December 2023 series will mature on Dec. 29, ending all borrowing and lending on the protocol, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

“We felt this decision was necessary because there is currently not sustainable demand for fixed-rate borrowing on Yield Protocol,” Yield said. “Additionally, the current regulatory environment in the U.S., combined with increasing regulatory requirements in Europe and the U.K., make it challenging for us to continue to support the Yield Protocol.”

At its peak in April 2022, Yield Protocol had over $22 million in total value locked, but this figure has since dwindled to around $2 million.

Low volatility returned to crypto markets after a sudden move higher earlier this week following ETF decisions.

Bitcoin (BTC) lost 0.7% while crypto majors showed mixed movements as low volatility seemed to return to the crypto markets, days after ETF optimism pushed prices higher.

The largest cryptocurrency by market value traded at $27,400 on Wednesday, seemingly stabilizing around that level after losing support at $28,000 earlier this week. Ether (ETH) lost 1.3%, Solana’s SOL fell 3.5% to lead majors losses, while Cardano’s ADA and BNB Chain’s BNB slipped 2% each in the past 24 hours.

XRP tokens were among the few majors in green following two Ripple victories in the last 24 hours. A court case tilted in the payment firm’s favor, while its Asia arm was awarded a license to offer key services in Singapore – bouying prices.

Elsewhere, Polygon’s MATIC and Tron network’s TRX rose 2% on no apparent material catalyst. Tokens of lending protocol Aave (AAVE) dropped 8%, plunging the most among the top hundred tokens by market capitalization.

Chiharu Shiota’s exhibition “A Tide Of Emotions” has officially launched in Vietnam.

From October 4, art enthusiasts in Vietnam will be able to see the works of female artist Chiharu Shiota for the first time in the installation exhibit “A Tide Of Emotions” at Vincom Contemporary Art Center (VCCA – B1-R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, 72A Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi).

The A Tide Of Emotions exhibition at VCCA is a breathtaking installation that occupies the entire exhibition room. The main display, which shares the same name, features an abundance of red wool fibers intricately woven together and attached to the gallery wall. The threads extend from boats placed on the floor, creating a stunning image of a cave intertwined with a red spider web crafted by human hands.

The overwhelming feeling of the space is both beautiful and painful due to the red color and woolen webs that fill the area. The exhibit’s title, A Tide Of Emotions, accurately captures the range of emotions that viewers experience in response to the work.

The second piece is another remarkable display of delicately woven fabrics that run along the glass wall in front of the exhibition room. The gentle white color and simple scale of the work create a welcoming, melodious melody that greets the audience and invites them to immerse themselves in the intense emotional tide of the exhibition hall.

According to the organizer, Chiharu Shiota has spent several days at the exhibition space and has completed two new pieces. While the works feature red wool and boats, which are signature elements of the artist’s previous works, the artist has made an effort to incorporate unique elements for each exhibition space, resulting in distinct pieces. For instance, in the creation of A Tide Of Emotions, the boats used were sourced from fishing villages and had a history of withstanding the sea and storms before being integrated into the artwork. The project required significant human resources and took a whole month to complete.

Chiharu Shiota (born 1972) is a Japanese artist who presently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She is well-known for her large-scale, stunning, and sophisticated installation pieces, which are methodically and skilfully woven from hundreds of thousands of strands and can take up whole areas. Her creations have a great aesthetic impact as well as multiple layers of significance.
