Terra Classic Community Votes to Stop USTC Minting as Revival Efforts Continue

TerraUSD Classic, the stablecoin at the center of Terra’s implosion, will no longer be minted.

The Terra Classic protocol will no longer mint terraUSD (USTC), the infamous token that slumped 99% amid the implosion of the once high-flying Terra protocol in 2022.

A community vote on Terra Classic’s governance forum that ended last week won 59% approval to stop all USTC minting. The current value of USTC is 1 cent as of Monday afternoon.

Terra Classic is the original network created by Terraform Labs. It has continued as an independent blockchain rather than Terra 2.0, which is a forked version that was created in the wake of Terra’s collapse.

TerraUSD was the token at the center of Terra’s collapse and led to a 99.9% drop in LUNA token prices, $28 billion being hemorrhage from Terra-based DeFi applications and an eventual spiral to crypto funds going bust.

Community members say the move could help protect users and outside investors who are burning USTC to help to achieve the repeg. Burning refers to the permanent deletion of tokens from circulation by sending them to an address that’s not controlled by anyone.

Algorithmic stablecoins like USTC are backed by a basket of assets, such as LUNA and bitcoin (BTC), without depending on any centralized third party to hold those assets. Most of the tokens, however, fall victim to a “death spiral” – with outflows or sales of backing assets causing a sudden de-pegging of USTC-like projects.

The USTC was intended to be pegged at $1 by this mechanism, and members hoped that burning tokens could eventually let USTC meet that goal. This, however, could require the trillions of tokens to be burned.

“Any form of minting or reminting goes completely against any community effort,” the proposal read. “Most importantly, this proposal opens the door for institutions like Binance to start burning USTC knowing that the minting and reminting is over.”

Such proposals and moves are part of a small set of engineers hoping to return Terra to its glory days.

Bitcoin and S&P 500 Eye Quarterly Loss as Bonds Look Most Attractive Since 2009

Relative attractiveness of bonds means less incentive to invest in bitcoin. The leading cryptocurrency is considered a zero-yielding risk asset, by some observers.

Bitcoin (BTC) and Wall Street’s benchmark equity index, the S&P 500, appear on track to end the third quarter lower as a key metric shows the case for owning bonds over stocks and risk assets in general, is strongest since 2009.

The top cryptocurrency by market value traded at $26,100, representing a 14% decline for the third quarter, assuming losses hold through Sept. 30. At Friday’s close of $4,320.05, the S&P 500, the benchmark for risk assets worldwide, including cryptocurrencies, was down nearly 3% for the third quarter.

The equity risk premium, the gap between the S&P 500’s earnings yield and the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note, has declined to -0.58, the lowest since 2009, according to charting platform TradingView. The spread has averaged roughly 3.5 points since 2008.

In other words, the allure of investing in stocks and other risk assets has dimmed with safe-haven government bonds offering a relatively higher return. Treasury securities are regarded as risk free, given they are backed by the United States government, which has never defaulted on its debts. The 10-year yield, therefore, is considered a benchmark risk-free rate of return against which other returns from other assets are compared.

The difference between the S&P 500’s dividend yield and the 10-year Treasury yield paints a similar picture. The spread has declined to -2.87, the lowest since July 2007.

Juicy bond yields also mean less incentive to invest in bitcoin. Crypto propounders consider bitcoin a haven asset like digital gold, although historically, the cryptocurrency has been a pure play on liquidity, often acting as a lead indicator to stocks.

“Bitcoin is a non-yield bearing, risk-on asset. As such, it will be adversely affected by a high USD risk-free rate due to portfolio rebalancing,” Alex McFarlane, co-founder of Keyring Network, said on LinkedIn.

“The suggestion that we can go forward ignoring rates markets and trade BTC as an orthogonal portfolio component doesn’t square unless BTC can offer a risk-free rate – which it cannot, unlike POS [Proof-of-stake],” McFarlane added.

The S&P 500 earnings yield is the sum of the earnings per share of the index’s component companies divided by the current index level. The dividend yield is the basic return an investor can expect to receive by investing in the index companies.

The spread between the earnings yield and the bond yield helps money managers assess the relative attractiveness of the two assets.

To serve tourists in a timely manner for sightseeing and experiencing the Tu San Gorge within the Nho Que 1 hydroelectric reservoir, the People’s Committee of Meo Vac District has requested that two entities, namely the Nho Que 1 Hydroelectric Joint Stock Company and the Tu San Agriculture and Tourism Services Cooperative, “work together to agree on a plan to continue transporting tourists within the scope of the Nho Que 1 hydroelectric reservoir.” The results of their collaboration will be submitted to the People’s Committee of Meo Vac District before 9 a.m. on September 20th.

Furthermore, the People’s Committee of the district has also requested the “resumption of tourist transportation within the Nho Que 1 hydroelectric reservoir,” with the starting time being 7 a.m. on September 21st.

In addition, any issues related to tourist transportation activities within the Nho Que 1 hydroelectric reservoir will be further reviewed by the People’s Committee of the district to address matters within its jurisdiction. Timely reports will be made to the provincial People’s Committee and relevant provincial specialized agencies to ensure appropriate resolutions.

A representative from the Tu San Agriculture and Tourism Services Cooperative confirmed that on September 21st at 7 a.m., tourist transportation activities for sightseeing, experiencing, and exploring the Tu San Gorge within the Nho Que 1 hydroelectric reservoir will resume.

On September 20th, Mr. Trinh Van Tu, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hai Phong City in charge of heritage, announced that Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago has been recognized by UNESCO as a world natural heritage, but not the entire Cat Ba Archipelago, Cat Hai District, becomes heritage.

Mr. Tu explained that according to the UNESCO evaluation dossier, it includes the entire Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba National Park, Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve, and a portion of the area belonging to the communes of Gia Luan and Xuan Dam. The entire Cat Ba Town, Ben Beo area, the area implementing the Cat Ba Amatina project by Vinaconex, Hien Hao commune, Phu Long commune, etc., are not included within the recognized boundaries of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago world natural heritage, as this area has been planned for economic development, residential areas, commercial zones, tourism, and services.

Regarding the regulations for tourism service operations for the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago world natural heritage, the Hai Phong Tourism Department is awaiting government guidance. Afterward, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces will agree on a joint operation plan.

At that time, tourists visiting Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh and Lan Ha Bay in Hai Phong will have a simpler experience. Visitors can purchase tickets for tours of Ha Long Bay or visit Lan Ha Bay by the hour, or tourists can purchase tickets for a combined itinerary to visit both bays.

Vietnam among the top 20 most crowded summer destinations

In Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Thailand are among the top 20 most attractive international destinations for summer 2023. The United States and Spain are leading the list.

ForwardKeys, the world’s leading travel data company, analyzed the numbers based on air travel passenger volumes to compile a list of the 40 most attractive international destinations for this summer.

Globally, the number of flight bookings for the summer (from July 1st to August 31st) is down by 23% compared to pre-pandemic levels (as of 2019) and up by 31% compared to the same period in 2022.

The top countries most visited by international tourists are led by the United States, attracting 11% of the total international tourists during the summer of 2023. Following closely are Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, France, Mexico, Germany, Canada, and Turkey.

In this list, Vietnam ranks 19th, following Thailand, the UAE, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, but ahead of Switzerland, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and others. According to ForwardKeys, the number of air travelers to Vietnam during this summer is down by 28% compared to the same period before the pandemic and up by 12% compared to the same period in 2022. However, Thailand is down by 41% compared to 2019 and up by 11% compared to 2022.

In terms of the source market, the United States leads with an 18% share of scheduled flight ticket bookings. Next are Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, South Korea, China, Japan, Spain, and Italy.

For most countries, tourism numbers have seen double-digit growth compared to the previous year but have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. The world’s largest source markets have shown more resilience, with the United States increasing by 17% compared to the previous year and only decreasing by 1% compared to 2019.

Other major source markets have seen slower recoveries: France is down by 17% compared to pre-pandemic levels, the UK by 20%, Germany by 21%, Italy by 24%, South Korea by 28%, Japan by 53%, and China by 67%.

Vietnam tourism welcomed nearly 8 million international visitors in the past 8 months

Asian tourism has recovered, with all three countries in the region ranking in the top 10 source markets. South Korea, China, and Japan are experiencing growth rates of at least three digits compared to 2022. Although China’s outbound tourism market was among the slowest to recover, it still ranks 7th due to its massive scale.

Olivier Ponti, Deputy CEO of ForwardKeys, noted: “Now, the world’s major tourism powerhouse, China, is beginning to revive. Looking towards the fourth quarter and beyond, including 2024, my optimism is growing. Currently, global flight bookings in the last three months of the year are only slightly behind 4% compared to 2019, and in the first three months of 2024, they are up by 3%. The most promising region in the fourth quarter is the Middle East, where flight bookings are up by 37% compared to 2019. Next is Central America with a 33% increase and the Caribbean with a 24% increase.”

On September 20th, the Trade and Investment Promotion Center of An Giang province announced the launch of a new and exciting waterway in the West. This waterway stretches from the confluence of the Chau Doc River to Cham village, upstream of the Hau River.

The waterway connects Chau Doc rafting village to Da Phuoc town, which is famous for its Cham village of the Muslim community.

The waterway project is located in Phuoc Tho and Ha Bao 2 hamlets in Da Phuoc town, An Phu district, An Giang province. The project includes 161 rafts and cages that raise various freshwater fish species found in An Giang. Tam Coc – Bich Dong adjusts tour ticket prices

The boat fare is charged separately at a reasonable price of 150,000 VND per boat. The new ticket collection method for Tam Coc – Bich Dong is now similar to that of the Trang An scenic area.

Shiba Inu Developers Floated a Dummy Token and Now Activist Traders Are Making it a Real Thing

A token meant for testing purposes wasn’t intended to be traded, yet some traders have pounced on the supposed opportunity.

Only in crypto can a token deemed worthless by its developers be resurrected as a serious project by an “army” of followers.

Calcium (CAL), a so-called dummy token created by the Shiba Inu team as part of a plan to renounce the bone (BONE) token contract, was issued by developers early on Friday. Over 50% of its supply was picked up by a bot shortly after going live as part of a planned move, and these tokens were live on the decentralized exchange (DEX) ShibaSwap.

But traders still purchased the tokens in hopes of making a quick buck, only to end up losing money. Some Shiba Inu community members warned against purchasing the tokens, as they were not intended to be an investable asset.

However, a cohort of community members who claim to have lost money used their CAL token holdings to create a new trading pair on Uniswap – with the token quickly finding over 1,400 holders in less than 12 hours. Participants in this new trading pair said they were “tired of Shiba Inu’s promises,” and intended to make Calcium a real project.

This led to prices of the original CAL token dropping 99% and had an on-chain liquidity of just $4,800 on ShibaSwap. But CAL tokens on the Uniswap DEX racked up $4 million in trading volumes and amassed $164,000 in liquidity.

How Calcium Came Into Play

Shiba Inu developers said in a post last week that they would issue calcium tokens to renounce the contract ownership of bone (BONE), the governance tokens of the newly launched Shibarium blockchain.

In crypto circles, renouncing a smart contract means that the contract’s creator will no longer have control over it – giving investors a sense of security as the contract can no longer be changed or updated, and is hence saved from possible manipulation by the contract creator.

“This token is being created only for a specific purpose to mint and renounce BONE,” Shiba Inu developers said. “Please do not trade this token as it will not have any future value or need.”

“If someone is selling this please consider this a scam,” developer Kaal Dhairya wrote at the time.

Crypto project, however, doesn’t need a developer’s endorsement to work. Community members can rally around any token, seed liquidity on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and gather outside developers to work on use cases.

“People bought, added lp, and created a TeleGram chat which then turned it into a movement against the $SHIB team because of their recent actions against the community and ecosystem,” @1BlockChainKing, a vocal member of the Calcium token community, tweeted.
