Russia has seen the biggest drone assault on its territory since it launched its war on Ukraine

Russia sees biggest drone assault on its own territory since invading Ukraine, as Kyiv strikes back through the skies.

Russia has seen the biggest drone assault on its territory since it launched its war on Ukraine while Moscow killed two men in a near-simultaneous bombardment on Kyiv, as the aerial intensity of the conflict ratcheted up.

Six Russian regions including Moscow came under attack early Wednesday, while in the city of Pskov, near the Estonian border, several transport planes were reportedly damaged when drones targeted an airport.

Russian officials haven’t reported any casualties, and claimed to have thwarted almost all of the strikes.

Kyiv officials meanwhile said Russia hit the Ukrainian capital with a “massive” bombardment overnight. “Kyiv has not experienced such a powerful attack since spring,” Serhii Popko, the head of the city’s Military Administration, said on Telegram.

Popko said several groups of drones were traveling towards Kyiv “from different directions” and later missiles were launched towards the capital. More than 20 “enemy targets” were destroyed by air defense forces, he added.

Two people were killed – men aged 26 and 36 years old – and three people sustained injuries of varying severity from falling debris, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Across the country, Ukraine downed 28 cruise missiles and destroyed 15 out of 16 drones launched overnight, the Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, said Wednesday.

“The trees were on fire. There was lot of smoke … shrapnel went through the thick cabinet on my balcony,” Yelena Yemelyanova, 69, told CNN on Wednesday in Kyiv.

“The wave of the blast swung me to the corridor wall. Everything fell from the kitchen cabinets,” she said. “The front door of the apartment was blown out.”

Another resident in the proximity of one of the blasts, Victor Savchuk, told CNN that his 15-year-old grandson was left soaked in blood after debris fell on him. “The sirens go off every day one, two three times a day. We don’t know what to expect,” Savchuk said.

Flights shut down in Moscow

Ukraine has increasingly been emboldened to hit strategic targets inside Russia through the air in recent weeks, even as it suffers assaults on its own cities, setting up a new phase of the conflict defined by Kyiv’s apparent efforts to wear down domestic Russian support for the war.

Following the raids all four Moscow airports temporarily suspended flight operations. At least 11 passenger flights were redirected to alternate airports, causing disruption, state news agency TASS reported citing the Federal Air Transport Agency. Later updates indicated that the airports resumed normal operations.

The governor of Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, said air defenses thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack on a television tower early on Wednesday. Aleksandr Bogomaz said a fire had been extinguished and emergency services were working at the site of the alleged attack.

The wave of strikes came hours after the governor of Russia’s southwestern Bryansk region said that the Ukrainian military had fired at the village of Klimovo with multiple launch rocket systems, and claimed an unspecified number of deaths.

An airport in Russia’s western city of Pskov, used for both civilian and military aircraft, also came under drone attacks late on Tuesday, according to the region’s governor.

Mikhail Vedernikov posted a video showing what appears to be a large plume of smoke coming from behind buildings in what looks like a residential area. Russian state news agency TASS reported that “as a result of drone attacks four Il-76 aircraft were damaged,” in Pskov. A fire broke out and two aircraft were engulfed in flames, TASS said, citing emergency services.

‘We’re not going to make stupid mistakes’: Fmr. Ukraine defense minister responds to counteroffensive criticism

Flights over Pskov and the region were restricted, TASS added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov attributed the increase in drone attacks on Russia to what he called the “continued terrorist activity of the Kyiv regime,” and said Russian President Vladimir Putin is receiving “timely and up-to-date information” on all developments.

Fierce fighting and sluggish movement is meanwhile continuing in the ground war. Ukraine stepped up its evacuations of children from the frontline town of Kupiansk on Tuesday, as Russian forces continued to bear down on the battered city.

Kupiansk lies in northeastern Ukraine, more then 200 miles from the southern front, where Ukrainian troops are making slow progress in their counter-offensive. The dueling theaters of fighting may indicate an attempt by each side to draw opposition troops away from their primary targets.

The Ukrainian military says that its forces have made further progress in a part of the southern front, towards the villages of Novodanylivka and Verbove. If successful in the Verbove area, the Ukrainians would widen a wedge of territory they have taken as they push south towards the strategic hub of Tokmak, which is occupied by the Russians.

Instead of force close, Hanoi train street should be considered as tourist attraction. Here’s why

Advertisements

Hanoi is being recommended to pilot the concept of the ‘railway coffee street.’ Many travel experts suggest that Hanoi should consider opening a trial version of the “railway coffee street” after this street continued to operate despite being officially banned.

According to local media, on August 27 hundreds of tourists flocked to the new railway coffee street in Dien Bien Ward to watch the passing trains. On the morning of August 28, the Phung Hung railway street section was also active, with numerous visitors sitting to enjoy coffee, strolling along the railway to take photos. The entrances to the Phung Hung railway street had one or two people from the local militia stationed there to provide security. If visitors inquired, they would be informed that entry was prohibited. Nonetheless, cafe owners openly invited guests and indicated there was a detour to access the area.

In 2019, the “railway coffee street” was banned due to safety concerns regarding the railway corridor. The Hoan Kiem District authorities also rejected the business applications from residents in this area in October 2019. Despite the ban, the “railway coffee street” continued to operate openly or covertly. Occasionally, when authorities tightened their control, businesses would resort to “guerrilla operations.” However, from Lunar New Year until the present, the railway street has been operating openly, attracting a large number of visitors.

The Director of a local travel company and a destination development expert, has suggested that considering the current situation, completely banning the railway street is “unfeasible.” Therefore, Hanoi should contemplate developing this area into a tourist spot with regulated entry and supervision. Additionally, the daily number of visitors should be restricted to ensure safety when trains arrive.

“Business owners should also contribute towards maintaining security personnel and adhere to railway safety regulations,” he said.

Given the current dilemma of “neither completely closed nor fully open,” Duong Ngoc Dung, Chief Marketing Officer at Vietnam Maritime Bank (MSB), believes that opening the railway street would be a more viable choice for tourism development.

Mr. Duong has a personal connection to this area as he lived on Hang Bong street as a child. The memory of the former railway street in Mr. Duong’s mind was a place of “smells, danger, and somewhat shabbiness.” Since cafe businesses started operating, the appearance of the street has undergone a complete transformation, indicating a positive change due to tourism.

“I believe it’s necessary to trial the opening of the railway street and implement safety measures. The residents are still active, but the lack of management makes it even riskier,” Mr. Duong mentioned, although he acknowledged that openly enticing customers in front of authorities is “disregarding the law.”

Foreign tourists at Hanoi train street

Nguyen Thanh Binh, CEO of a international travel agency believes that the railway coffee street is an “unconventional and dramatic” attraction that appeals to international tourists. “All relevant parties should convene to brainstorm safety measures. If they prove inadequate, then a complete ban could be considered,” Mr. Binh proposed.

He believes that dealing with the railway street issue is not as straightforward as simply “allowing or disallowing.” From a sociological perspective, people have lived in this area for generations. Hence, it is essential to determine whether their living area falls within the railway safety corridor and whether their land is encroaching or legally acquired. If it constitutes encroachment and violates the railway safety corridor, the authorities should take steps to rectify it. However, if the land use is legal, their livelihood in that living area is “justified.”

“If a ban is imposed, Hanoi needs to consider the impact on how many households. They have invested so much, so who will support them if they are banned?” Mr. Binh questioned.

From the perspective of international tourists, most find the railway street to be a unique destination with very few similar places worldwide. They find it perplexing to learn that the railway street is under a ban.

Byron, an Australian tourist who visited the railway street on August 28, expressed that he had never seen such a “distinctive” place worldwide. He hopes that authorities will regulate it to ensure the railway street becomes a safe destination. Byron and his friends declined the “underground invitation” from cafe owners due to concerns about scams.

Daisy Hayer-Markos, a tourist from the Netherlands, believes the railway street has a special allure for foreigners. Tourists are highly conscious here. They promptly follow the instructions of cafe owners when the train arrives. Consequently, Daisy stated that there is “no peril” justifying a ban on such an appealing tourist spot.

Evaluna Perez Guillen, an Italian tourist, described Hanoi’s railway street as a favored destination for many Europeans. She visited the railway street in September of the previous year and noted that the trains move at a leisurely pace, with regular whistle reminders for visitors. Evaluna believes that this area could only pose a danger “for the hearing-impaired.”

“This is Vietnam’s unique destination; I’ve never encountered anything similar. This street could help Vietnam draw in an immense number of global tourists,” she said.

Can the “Blue Moon” be observed in Vietnam tonight (August 30)?

Advertisements

The term “Blue Moon” refers to the second full moon in August which is irrelevant to the color of the Moon. The previous full moon, which was also a supermoon, occurred on August 1. The moon will be completely illuminated and will be on the opposite side of the earth from the sun.

On August 30-31, 2023, there will be a full moon and a monthly blue moon. It is also a supermoon, the third in a row, and the nearest supermoon of 2023. (Photo: John Jardine Goss/ EarthSky)

This is the second of three supermoons scheduled for 2023. During this supermoon, the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, around 363,711 kilometers away. The Moon image may look 7% bigger and brighter than a normal full Moon.

The supermoon phenomenon is relatively uncommon, occurring three to four times every year on average. However, “Blue Moons” are rare, with just one out of every 33 supermoons meeting the criterion.

Astronomy enthusiasts will have to wait until 2037 to see the next “Blue Moon”, according to NASA.

The next supermoon will arrive at 8:35 a.m. (Vietnam time) on August 31. Because this is not a good time to see the supermoon, people in Vietnam can only see it at its most rounded condition on the nights of August 30 and August 31.

Harmonizing Expectations: Navigating Expatriate Life in Hoi An’s Timeless Charm

Advertisements

Hoi An, with its timeless beauty and historic charm, has been captivating the hearts of travelers for years. However, when it comes to living long-term in this picturesque destination, opinions tend to vary. For those considering a move to Hoi An, it’s essential to gain insight beyond the alluring façade and to understand the realities of day-to-day life in this enchanting town.

Balancing Comfort and Adventure

The prospect of relocating to a new place can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. As someone who has spent several years in the bustling modern city of Saigon, the idea of transitioning to Hoi An may conjure a mix of emotions. The allure of its historic streets, ancient architecture, and slower pace of life might be magnetic, but concerns about comfort and convenience are legitimate.

Climate and Environment

One of the notable challenges that some expats face in Hoi An is adapting to the climate. The heat and humidity can be intense, especially during certain months. Unlike the modern amenities of Saigon, Hoi An might not always offer the same level of comfort in terms of air conditioning and ventilation. Moreover, issues like black mold and sanitation can present a less than idyllic living situation. It’s essential to recognize that Hoi An’s charm comes with a trade-off, particularly when it comes to the physical environment.

Lifestyle and Local Experience

Haggling, overcrowding, and availability of everyday products are concerns frequently raised by expats living in Hoi An. While the vibrant local markets and street stalls might add a unique touch to the town’s ambiance, they can also lead to challenges for those accustomed to a more streamlined shopping experience. For someone who values the sanctity of their home environment, adjusting to the hustle and bustle of Hoi An may require patience and an open mind.

Beaches and Beyond

Hoi An’s proximity to stunning beaches is often a significant draw. The question of beach cleanliness is crucial for those who envision spending leisurely days by the sea. It’s advisable to gather updated information about the state of the beaches in 2023, as local efforts might have been made to improve the beach environment and address any pollution concerns.

Seeking Personal Insights

While blog posts offer a valuable starting point, they might not always reflect the current reality. The experiences of individuals who have made Hoi An their home in recent times can provide valuable insights into the day-to-day challenges and rewards of living in this unique destination. It’s worth connecting with expats who have transitioned from Saigon to Hoi An to understand the differences and similarities they’ve encountered.

Conclusion

The decision to relocate to Hoi An is a significant one that requires careful consideration. While the town’s allure as a vacation destination is undeniable, the practical aspects of day-to-day life can present challenges, particularly for those accustomed to the conveniences of modern city living. By seeking out the experiences of current residents and weighing the pros and cons, you can make a more informed decision about whether Hoi An aligns with your vision of comfort, home, and environment. Remember, every adventure comes with its unique set of trade-offs, and finding the right balance is key to making your new chapter in Hoi An a success.

Heavy traffic on expressway, HLD advises restricting cars during September 2nd holiday

Advertisements

The Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC E) has recently issued recommendations for vehicles to choose appropriate routes when traveling on the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway (HLD) during the upcoming September 2nd holiday.

According to VEC E, after the opening of the Dau Giay – Phan Thiet expressway segment four months ago, the traffic volume on the HLD expressway has been steadily increasing. Specifically, the section from An Phu to the junction with the Dau Giay – Phan Thiet route serves an average of 58,000 – 62,000 vehicles per day, with peak days seeing an increase to 70,000 – 73,000 vehicles, nearly doubling its operational capacity.

Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway is often congested

The high volume of vehicles not only causes congestion on the expressway but also poses the risk of creating pressure on the service demand at the Km41+100 rest stop during the September 2nd holiday.

Therefore, VEC E advises vehicles to select appropriate routes for travel during the holiday period in order to reduce the load on the HLD expressway and to meet customer needs at the rest stop, without affecting everyone’s travel schedules.

The management unit of the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway also recommends drivers to pay attention to reducing speed, maintaining a safe distance to avoid collision risks on the route.

According to the road network planning for the period 2021 – 2030 and the vision until 2050, the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway is planned to have a 10-lane scale. Currently, Phase 1 of the project with a 4-lane scale has been invested and operated by the Vietnam Expressway Investment and Development Corporation (VEC) since 2016.

Since its operation, the traffic volume on the route has continuously increased (averaging about 10.45% per year). Calculations show that the expressway section from HCMC (An Phu junction) to Long Thanh (junction with the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway) covering approximately 26 km has been operating beyond its capacity, failing to meet transportation demands. The route frequently experiences severe congestion.

Previously, in October 2022, VEC proposed self-financing of about 14.7 trillion VND to expand this expressway to 8 – 10 lanes.

FTX Customers Hit by ‘Withdrawal’ Phishing Mails After SIM Swap Attack

Advertisements

Woes for users of Sam Bankman-Fried’s former company show no signs of stopping.

FTX customers continue to be plagued by issues several months after the exchange shut down, blocking millions of users from accessing billions in capital stored on the disgraced exchange.

Some former users are getting hit by a new phishing attack on their FTX-registered emails a week after Kroll, the claims agent in the bankruptcy proceedings, was impacted by a SIM swapping attack. The attack leaked personal information of customers, such as account balances, phone numbers and home addresses.

Customer data of other bankrupt crypto firms Genesis and lender BlockFi were also leaked in that attack. Crypto account passwords and other sensitive data weren’t affected, but customers were warned to be on the lookout for scammers impersonating parties in the bankruptcy.

Whoever got their hands on this goldmine of information lost no time in crafting hopeful emails that purport to return the lost capital to holders – as long as they first connect a crypto wallet to the account.

“You have been identified as an eligible client to begin withdrawing digital assets from your FTX account,” an email sent to several FTX creditors, viewed by CoinDesk, read. “Withdrawals will be dispatched in USDC matched to the balance of digital assets held in your wallet at the time of platform pause.”

“You can now withdraw to an external ERC20 wallet by clicking the withdraw now button,” the phishing mail states.

Connecting a wallet to such a phishing mail is likely to drain one’s token holdings, as it may request private key data to conduct the transfer.

SIM swapping happens when scammers contact your mobile phone’s carrier and trick them into activating a SIM card that the fraudsters have. The scammers then target phone numbers and use a victim’s information to steal passwords, financial data, cryptocurrencies and other valuable items.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, FTX said it had taken a “precautionary measure of temporarily freezing affected user accounts within the customer claims portal.” The claims portal is an official platform where creditors can submit details about their accounts.

International tourists to Vietnam approaching yearly target in 8 months

Advertisements

Vietnam has welcomed over 7.8 million international visitors in the first 8 months, approaching the target of 8 million visitors set for the entire year.

According to data from the General Statistics Office, international arrivals to Vietnam reached 1.2 million in August 2023, a 17.2% increase compared to the previous month, and 2.5 times higher than the same period last year.

Cumulatively for the first 8 months of this year, international visitors to the country have totaled over 7.8 million, a 5.4-fold increase compared to the same period last year, but still only 69.2% compared to the same period in 2019 – a year unaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among these, South Korea continues to lead as the top source market for visitors to Vietnam in August, with nearly 386,000 arrivals, bringing the total from the “land of kimchi” to 2.27 million since the beginning of the year.

Vietnam achieved 97.5% of the plan to welcome international visitors in 2023.

This is also the only market with a total number of visitors to Vietnam reaching the million mark; all other markets recorded under 1 million visitors.

Notably, Chinese tourists are still experiencing strong growth. In August, Vietnam welcomed over 212,000 Chinese visitors, a 15% increase compared to July. The total number of Chinese visitors to Vietnam for the first 8 months reached nearly 950,000.

Following that are markets like Taiwan (China), Japan, the United States, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and more.

In the capital city, Hanoi, the Department of Tourism estimates that in August, there were 382,900 international arrivals out of a total of 2.18 million visitors, marking a 21.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022, and an 8.7% increase compared to July. For the first 8 months of 2023, Hanoi welcomed 2.79 million international visitors, a 4.6-fold increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Therefore, compared to the annual target of 8 million international visitors, Vietnam has achieved 97.5% of the year’s plan.

Especially noteworthy is Vietnam’s change in visa policy starting from August 15, moving towards granting electronic visas to citizens of all countries and extending the maximum stay period to 90 days. The extension of temporary residence for citizens of 13 visa-exempt countries to 45 days creates ample room for growth as Vietnam enters the peak season of international tourism at the end of the year.

Indian Crypto Exchange CoinSwitch Cuts Support Team, Citing Market Doldrums

The firm laid off 44 employees from the team, which still has 82 members.

Indian crypto investment platform CoinSwitch cut its customer support team by more than a third, citing low market activity.

The 44 job losses, which occurred about three weeks ago, amount to just under 7% of total employees, a company spokesperson told CoinDesk. The firm has hired around 60 people since April, mostly in product tech and compliance, for a total employee strength of around 640 before the layoffs. The customer support team still has 82 members.

CoinSwitch is not alone in needing to adapt to a changed environment. Earlier this month, rival CoinDCX cut about 12% of its staff, laying off 71 employees as a bear crypto market and India’s tax regime conspired to reduce trading volumes and thus revenue. India has imposed stiff taxes on crypto, including a 30% tax on crypto profits and a more controversial 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) on all transactions since Feb. 1 2022.

“As and when volumes grow and we open new roles, we will be happy to welcome back those impacted,” a company spokesperson said.

Local Indian news outlet Moneycontrol reported the job losses earlier today.

CoinSwitch has offered severance and additional benefits for up to four months depending on the tenure of the laid-off employees, according to a source.

YouTube launches feature to find songs by melody

Advertisements

YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows you to search for a song solely based on its melody.

Few things are as frustrating as having a tune echoing in your mind, making you ponder all day long without being able to pinpoint which song it originates from. That melody keeps resonating in your head, yet you can’t seem to recall the title or even the lyrics of the song to retrieve information.

Dubbed as ‘hum-to-search,’ this feature was developed by Google to enable you to simply hum, sing, or produce any sound resembling a melody, in order to uncover the song containing that melody. Apart from humming to search for the desired song, you can also record a snippet of the song for identification.

If you’re using YouTube and want to experience this feature, you just need to activate YouTube’s voice search tool. Then, you’ll need to hum or record the song for at least three seconds. Once the song is recognized, you’ll be directed to relevant content on the platform.

The results might not always be accurate, but it’s a worthy option to try if you’re stuck with elusive melodies. Additionally, it’s important to note that this feature is currently in the testing phase, so it’s uncertain whether it will become a permanent addition.

It’s also worth mentioning that due to the experimental nature of this feature, it’s currently only available to a “small percentage” of YouTube users on Android. This implies that you’ll have to wait a while before the feature becomes widely accessible. The experimental nature of the feature also means that Google might introduce some changes without prior notice.
