Tourists not allowed to bring plastic bags, single-use plastics to Co To Island from September 15th

Advertisements

After a one-year trial period, coming up ahead, tourists must officially adhere to the rule of not bringing plastic bags and single-use plastic items to Co To Island, Quang Ninh.

In an exchange with VietNamNet today (August 23), Mr. Nguyen Hai Linh, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Co To District, stated that the People’s Committee of Co To District has formally adopted a plan for protecting the marine environment.

Specifically, starting from September 15, all passengers will not be allowed to bring plastic bags and single-use plastics that pose a risk of environmental pollution to Co To Island.

People and Co To district authorities cooperate to clean up rubbish at Tinh Yeu beach, which is carried by the tide from the sea.

Previously, the Co To District authorities conducted a one-year trial period to encourage tourists to follow this practice. The results demonstrated significant improvement in the marine environment both around Co To Island. Moreover, residents and authorities collaborated to regularly clean up waste at beaches, roads, and to collect wastewater for treatment, contributing to the increasing cleanliness of the marine area around Co To Island.

As an example, most recently on August 22, while a fishing boat was anchored in the waters of Co To, a large-sized turtle was spotted swimming near the boat and gradually moving towards the sandy shore.

According to Mr. Linh, the most recent appearance of sea turtles on Co To Island was about 10 years ago. A few months ago, dolphins were also seen swimming and playing near the shores of Co To Island.

Large sea turtles appeared on Co To island on August 22

At the current time, turtles are beginning their nesting season, and they select clean sandy beaches as their nesting sites during the night.

Therefore, the marine environment in Co To is progressively improving, becoming cleaner after implementing local environmental protection activities. Especially notable is the campaign to reduce plastic waste and restore the cleanliness of Co To’s marine environment.

HCMC renames 8km Hanoi Highway to Vo Nguyen Giap Road

Advertisements

The section of Hanoi Highway spanning approximately 8km from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc Intersection in Thu Duc City (Ho Chi Minh City) has officially been renamed Vo Nguyen Giap Road.

This morning (August 23rd), the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City organized a ceremony to rename Hanoi Highway to Vo Nguyen Giap Road. Specifically, a segment of Hanoi Highway, measuring nearly 8km from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc Intersection (within Thu Duc City), has been renamed Vo Nguyen Giap Road.

Leaders of Ho Chi Minh City performed the renaming ceremony of Hanoi Highway to Vo Nguyen Giap Street.

According to Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Duong Anh Duc, this renaming is to recognize and honor the significant contributions of General Vo Nguyen Giap. It also demonstrates the sentiments and gratitude of the Party, government, and citizens of the city towards a prominent figure who made significant contributions to the nation.

“Renaming Vo Nguyen Giap Road will create a continuous axis of Hanoi – Vo Nguyen Giap – Dien Bien Phu, establishing a connection between historical events, such as the Dien Bien Phu campaign, and the historical figure of General Vo Nguyen Giap. This contributes to educating about historical, cultural traditions and enhancing love for the homeland and the pride of the people,” shared the leadership of the People’s Committee.

On behalf of the Ho Chi Minh City government, Deputy Chairman Duong Anh Duc suggested that relevant departments review and gather information about businesses, organizations, individuals, and households in the 8 wards of Thu Duc City affected by the road renaming. This is to provide support in adjusting and updating related documents and minimizing disruptions that could impact people’s lives.

Mr. Duong Anh Duc also hoped that residents living along the road would empathize and collaborate with state agencies during the process of updating and revising relevant documents.

Prior to this, on July 12th, during the 10th session of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, an agreement was reached to change Hanoi Highway (from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc Intersection) to Vo Nguyen Giap Road.

HCMC to have 14 km of flower road along North-South railway route

Advertisements

The Department of Construction has reported to the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City regarding the support and coordination in implementing the “Railway – Flowers Path” movement, following the main idea of Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, Bui Xuan Cuong.

Since the beginning of the year, the Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) has been executing a plan to transform Vietnam’s railway into the longest flower-lined path in the country’s future. This involves planting and caring for characteristic flowers from the three regions along railway lines, at train stations, and within units of this industry.

In May, the famous international travel site Lonely Planet named Vietnam’s Thong Nhat railway (North-South railway) first in the world’s 9 most spectacular train travel itineraries.

The North-South railway passes through the Ho Chi Minh City area with a length of about 14 kilometers, traversing the districts of District 3, Phu Nhuan, Go Vap, Binh Thanh, and Thu Duc. Starting from April, VNR has organized signing ceremonies to introduce the model of a “Safe, Clean, Green, and Environmentally Friendly Railway Corridor,” aiming to initiate the “Railway – Flowers Path” movement within the city.

According to the Department of Construction, the railway sector has proactively collaborated with districts across the city, signing comprehensive agreements to undertake cleaning, litter removal, weeding, and planting of trees, ornamental plants, and flowers along the railway sections passing through Binh Thanh District and Phu Nhuan District. District 3 has a plan for deployment, and Thu Duc City has conducted on-site surveys to coordinate strategies.

To support VNR in turning the concept into reality, the Department of Construction proposes that the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee issue directives to localities and relevant entities to collaborate in cleaning and transporting garbage and waste from the northern Saigon railway station area in Ward 11, District 3 (about 200 meters), which has been disposed of onto the railway tracks by individuals over many years. Once the area is cleared, the railway units and Ward 11 People’s Committee will establish green spaces, committing to maintaining and protecting the clean and beautiful green environment to prevent re-pollution.

Simultaneously, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City will support the planting of 300 Tabebuia rosea trees in the vacant space between the railway protection fence and the sidewalk of Pham Van Dong Street. They will also evaluate and provide resources for constructing the most beautiful flower-lined route within Phu Nhuan District, serving as a typical representation of the movement across Ho Chi Minh City.

The Department of Construction also suggests that the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee task the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with collaborating alongside the People’s Committees of localities with railway lines passing through them to assist railway units in selecting and providing flower species suitable for the city’s climate and soil conditions. They should also provide guidance on caring methods and protection measures for facilitating the favorable growth of these flowers.

The Department of Tourism should promote the image of the “Railway – Flowers Path” movement through various tourism programs and tours to attract both residents and visitors.

Mr. Dang Sy Manh, General Director of VNR, expresses his expectation: “Through the train windows, passengers can admire the peach blossoms of the North, witness the vibrant paper flowers of the Central region, and see the golden apricot blossoms of the South… throughout all four seasons. We are committed to making Vietnam’s railways a flowery path and building a railway-friendly brand to attract tourists.”

Ba Ria – Vung Tau invests 1.2 trillion VND to build beachside park

Advertisements

The Thuy Van road along the Back Beach in Vung Tau City (Ba Ria – Vung Tau province) will be invested in the construction of a public park, parking area, and green landscapes, with a total budget of approximately 1,200 billion VND.

The Executive Committee of the Provincial Party Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province has recently agreed on a plan to utilize around 1,200 billion VND from public investment funds to renovate the Thuy Van road at Back Beach, Vung Tau City, with the aim of serving public interests.

According to the plan, the Thuy Van road along the seaside of Back Beach will be transformed into a public park, adorned with green landscapes, on-site parking lots, and utility spaces to serve the community, creating attractive points for tourists visiting Vung Tau City.

Prior to this, the People’s Committee of Vung Tau City also proposed an alternative plan that, in addition to the public park, included a commercial and service area and an underground parking garage beneath the park, with an estimated budget of 2,000 billion VND. However, this option was not chosen.

To expedite the implementation of the renovation plan, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Pham Viet Thanh, has requested the provincial People’s Committee, Vung Tau City, and relevant departments to promptly carry out procedures for funding allocation, urban planning, and the selection of capable contractors. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to engage with businesses currently using land in the area to recover the land and create clean land reserves.

The area of over 28 hectares along the Thuy Van road by the seaside of Back Beach was previously assigned by the Provincial People’s Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province to the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Construction and Investment Company for redevelopment and construction.

Upon completion, this company leased the land to 8 enterprises for infrastructure and business purposes. As of the end of 2017, these enterprises had not paid the full amount of land rent, resulting in a total outstanding payment of over 320 billion VND.

Furthermore, some businesses undertook unauthorized construction projects on the land. These violations were pointed out by the provincial inspection team of Ba Ria – Vung Tau in their findings from 2018, which recommended taking action against the responsible organizations and individuals.

In 2021, the Provincial People’s Committee of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province made the decision to reclaim the entire land area for renovation, returning the public space to the people and tourists.

Dong Nai: Rare Bengal tiger gives birth to 7 cubs

Advertisements

Ms. Duong Thi Nha, the owner of Vuon Xoai eco-tourism area (Phuoc Tan Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai), stated on August 22 that a Bengal tiger mother successfully gave birth to three black tigers and four white tigers on the morning of the same day. The cubs are currently being cared for by vets and resort staff.

According to Ms. Nha, this is a very encouraging sign for the Vuon Xoai eco-tourism area. The resort has successfully tamed and bred numerous rare animals up to this point.

Prior to the Bengal tiger, four other rare animals such as hippopotamus, giraffe, and bear gave birth at the Vuon Xoai eco-tourism area, in which the Bengal tiger, white lion, brown bear, black panther, flamingo, South American parrot, rhinoceros, and red panda are extremely rare species being cared for here.

There are currently about 90 species and over 3,000 individuals of rare wild animals at the Vuon Xoai eco-tourism area’s zoo. Because the majority of the animals are protected and well cared for, the species has a relatively high reproduction rate.

The Bengal tiger is one of the six rarest tiger species on the planet. There are also Malay tigers, South Chinese tigers, Indochinese tigers, Sumatran tigers, and Siberian tigers, in addition to the Bengal tiger. There are currently less than 4,000 tigers in the wild.

The number of Bengal tigers, in particular, has rapidly declined, with only approximately 3,200 remaining. This species is at the top of the list of endangered species.

Nha Trang proposes to reopen scuba diving site in Hon Mun

Advertisements

Nha Trang City (Khanh Hoa Province) proposes reopening diving sites in the Hon Mun area after a period of suspension to restore the coral ecosystem.

This proposal was put forth by the People’s Committee of Nha Trang City in a report outlining the implementation of the comprehensive plan for the restoration of Nha Trang Bay until 2030. The proposal includes reopening the diving site at Hon Mun Island after a temporary suspension to restore the ecosystem of this area.

The Nha Trang Bay Management Board had previously suggested to the People’s Committee of Nha Trang City to allow the reopening of the diving site on the southern side of Hon Mun Island. With this proposal, the Management Board will be responsible for closely monitoring and controlling the number of tourists to avoid causing strain on the ecosystem. This will be applicable only to registered professional diving organizations and individuals, and divers participating must hold international sports diving certificates.

Many divers feel sad when they witness the scene of the desolate seabed. Photo: Minh Kha.

Additionally, the Bay Management Board suggests continuing the suspension of diving activities, regularly monitoring coral reefs, and organizing patrols and 24/7 control in the remaining areas of Hon Mun Island.

Furthermore, the board will collaborate with experts to assess the current state of coral reefs at Hon Mun. If positive results are achieved, consideration will be given to reopening diving sites in this area.

Prior to this, starting from June 27, 2022, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board temporarily halted swimming, snorkeling, boats, and glass-bottomed boats in the waters around Hon Mun Island until further notice. During this period, temporary diving arrangements were made at the Northeast of Hon Rom Island with limited visitor numbers.

Regarding the incident, by the end of 2022 and March 2023, the Northern and Southwest parts of Hon Mun Island had a coral coverage rate (including both hard and soft corals) of about 74.5%. This rate falls within the good range (51-75%) on the ranking scale.

In the Northwest and West of Hon Mun Island, due to the impact of Typhoon No. 9 in December 2021, coral reefs were damaged and broken. Currently, there are signs of recovery, particularly with Acropora dominating and various soft coral species thriving.

This recovery is a result of implementing measures to enhance patrols, surveillance, and temporarily suspending all tourism activities in the strictly protected zones.

Google deletes accounts not logged in for the past 2 years

Advertisements

Starting from December 2023, Google will delete accounts that have not been logged into for the past 2 years.

In May 2023, the search giant announced that this action is being taken for security reasons, while also serving as a cost-cutting measure.

Users often employ multiple Google accounts simultaneously for various purposes such as storing photos and documents. However, for the operating company, maintaining such storage capacities on free accounts constitutes a significant expense.

To maintain an account, users only need to log in at least once every two years. Google said the company will continue to send emails reminding users of account deletion.

Google’s new policy has drawn criticism from many. Some argue that Google needs to provide clearer communication about the new policy, rather than sending emails with easily dismissible subjects like “Update to Google Account Inactivity Policy.”

Others contend that citing security reasons to delete user accounts is illogical. “Old accounts are at risk of being compromised, so we should delete them? This is like saying we should burn all our money in the bank to prevent robberies,” a user complained on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the new regulation does not apply to schools, businesses, and accounts with YouTube videos. Paid storage subscription accounts are also unaffected. According to a 2020 statistic, Google indicated that the 15GB storage level would be maintained for a minimum of three years for 80% of users.

“Forgotten or unmonitored accounts often use outdated passwords and may be susceptible to intrusion. They lack two-factor authentication and users do not regularly check their security,” noted Ruth Kricheli, Google’s Vice President.

Microsoft is also implementing a similar policy, requiring customers to log into their accounts at least once every two years and reserving the right to unilaterally close accounts if users fail to comply.

For the first time in nearly two decades since being listed, Google is reporting four consecutive quarters of revenue growth below 10%. This is attributed to advertisers tightening budgets amid uncertain macroeconomic conditions and fierce competition from rivals like TikTok.

Thailand Warn Meta to Rein In Crypto Scams or Face Expulsion

Advertisements

A Thai lawmaker is seeking a court order to shut down Facebook in the country by the end of the month, accusing the platform of supporting fraudulent investment schemes.

Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) has told Meta’s (META) Facebook to curb the number of fraudulent crypto investment scams being advertised on the site, or risk being expelled from the country.

These fraudulent ads have affected more than 200,000 people, according to a statement published on the Ministry’s website. Chaiwut Thanakmanusorn, the Minister in charge of DES has asked a Thai court to prepare an order that would shut down Facebook by the end of the month if the platform doesn’t comply.

Over the course of three years, Facebook (now known as Meta) has gradually eased its restrictions on cryptocurrency and blockchain-related advertisements, CoinDesk has previously reported, broadening the criteria and accepted regulatory licenses for running such ads.

In March 2022, the company was sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for allegedly engaging in false, misleading, or deceptive conduct by publishing scam crypto ads linked to prominent Australian celebrities.

Shiba Inu Plans Shibarium’s Public Restart Days After Botched Launch

Advertisements

Test blocks on the network are processing as normal after developers blamed the earlier stoppage on unprecedented demand.

Shiba Inu developers are slowly working towards a Shibarium network reopening by monitoring validator data and transactions days after a much-hyped network launch was marred by network issues and a faulty bridge.

In a post early Tuesday, the project’s key developer, who goes by Shytoshi Kusama, said the network was “almost ready to reopen to the public” and had mechanisms in place to prevent an outage repeat.

“After two days of testing and tweaking parameters to achieve “ready” state Shibarium is now enhanced and optimized,” Kusama said. “As mentioned it is still in testing, but producing blocks.”

“Moreover, we have enabled a new monitoring system and additional fail-safes including rate limiting at the RPC level and auto server reset in case we get a huge level of traffic again,” he added.

Shibarium is an Ethereum layer-2 network that uses SHIB tokens as fees in what is part of a broader plan to position Shiba Inu as a serious blockchain project. It is said to have a focus on metaverse and gaming applications while finding use as a cheap settlement for DeFi applications built atop it.

A testing period for Shibarium saw significant success, with millions of wallets participating and conducting some 22 million transactions over a four-month period.

But last week’s launch quickly fizzled out. Transactions on the network were stalled for at least eleven hours shortly after going live, with millions of dollars stuck on a bridge, or a tool that transfers tokens between different networks. SHIB prices plunged 10% at the time.

Developers responded to the outage stating that “there was no bridge issue” and that the problem occurred following an unprecedented mass influx of transactions from users. They claimed servers failed as users overloaded the network with transactions – much higher than the handling capacity of those servers.

The network was later closed to the public and is set for a reopening now that these errors are supposed to be fixed. As such, developers are already allowing validators – or entities who provide computing resources to process network transactions – to start taking initial steps for the reopening.

“Tomorrow additional validators will go live, giving even more options for you to stake BONE for a share of the rewards,” Kusama wrote in Tuesday’s update. “Testing will wrap up, and we will prepare for public consumption once again.”

SHIB prices were down 4.3% in the past 24 hours, CoinGecko data shows.
