Crypto Options Volume on CME Rose to Nearly $1B in July: CCData

The increase in BTC options volume on the CME suggests that institutions might be hedging their positions.

Derivatives giant Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) recorded double-digit growth in crypto options trading volume in July, helped by investor appetite for hedging tools.

Trading activity rose 24% to $940 million, registering the first increase in four months, according to data tracked by CCData. Volumes in bitcoin (BTC) options rose 16.6% to $734 million, while ether (ETH) options registered a 60% increase to $207 million.

“The increase in BTC options volume on the CME suggests that institutions might be hedging their positions with options as uncertainty remains in the market,” CCData said in a report shared with CoinDesk.

Options are derivative contracts that give the purchaser the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at a predetermined price on or before a specific date. A call option gives the right to buy and a put option confers the right to sell.

CME’s options give the buyer of the call/put the right to buy/sell one cryptocurrency futures contract at a specific price at some future date. CME offers bitcoin and ether options based on the exchange’s cash-settled standard and micro BTC and ETH futures contracts. Standard contracts are sized at 5 BTC and 50 ETH. The micro ones are one-tenth of 1 BTC and one-tenth of 1 ETH.

Bitcoin and ether fell by 4% in July as optimism from the potential launch of bitcoin-spot ETF faded and regulatory uncertainty and DeFi hacks roiled sentiment. Bitcoin traded alongside stocks and gold a little more than it did in the second half of June, warranting the use of options to hedge directional exposure in the crypto market.

The combined activity in CME BTC and ETH futures cooled in line with the global slowdown. Futures volume on CME registered a 17.6% decline to $39.1 billion, while total derivatives trading volume (futures and options) fell 17.0% to $40.1 billion, according to CCData.

The combined crypto spot and derivatives trading volume on centralized slipped 12% in July to $2.36 trillion. “This was the second-lowest combined volume on centralised exchanges since December 2020, only eclipsed only by December 2022,” CCData noted.

Foreign visitors are experiencing the convenience of self-checking in for the first time in Da Nang.

Advertisements

Korean passengers today for the first time can check-in and automatically board the plane when leaving Da Nang International Terminal.

At 1pm on August 1, Korean male tourist Minsik arrived at Da Nang International Terminal to check-in to return home after his trip to the central region was guided by airline staff to the self-check-in device area, instead of having to wait in long lines like before.

The self check-in kiosk is simple to operate, the process is clearly displayed on the touch screen, and the content is bilingual. It only took two minutes for Mr. Minsik to complete the self-check-in procedure. In the early days, the area where 5 devices will be placed will have a 24/7 Support Assistant Team.

This is the first self-check-in service at Da Nang International Terminal, giving priority to passengers with simple travel documents. At first, the equipment mainly served Korean customers returning home, on flights operated by Korean Air (2 flights per day, 260 passengers per flight).

A Korean Air representative said that self-check-in kiosks are quite popular in developed countries, including South Korea. Passengers from the land of kimchi are very fond of this service because it saves a lot of time compared to having to wait at the traditional check-in counter.

“We have operated at other international airports such as Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa) but Da Nang International Terminal has developed fast in terms of infrastructure and is very smart. That is also the reason. many Korean passengers choose Da Nang as a destination,” he said.

Due to the first day of putting self-check-in kiosks into the application, the number of Korean customers who know about this service is not much. The self-check-in device has been invested by the terminal and is in the process of connecting with data and software with airlines, so passengers temporarily push their luggage to the check-in counter.

“In the short term, the terminal will apply self-check-in and auto boarding pass control services at departure gates. By October, the terminal will operate a self-check-in system when data is available. and synchronized application with airlines”, said Mr. Do Trong Hau, Deputy General Director of Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation Joint Stock Company (AHT).

International visitors to Da Nang are increasing rapidly after the Covid-19 pandemic. In the first seven months of the year, the city welcomed more than 1.144 million international visitors, 7.7 times higher than the same period in 2022. In July alone, international visitors were estimated at more than 204,000 arrivals, an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period in 2022. June and increased by 212% compared to July 2022.

Mr. Hau said that in July every day the station welcomes about 16,000 arrivals and departures. The city is building many new routes to India, Australia, … and restoring the destination of Da Nang with the Korean and Chinese tourist markets. The number of international passengers is gradually recovering, so AHT has proactively digitized the airport process to reduce congestion at the rush hour terminal.

“When the three systems of self-check-in, self-check-in luggage and auto-boarding operate synchronously, passengers only take 2-5 minutes to complete all procedures, instead of about 15 minutes compared to the previous system.” Mr. Hau said he would evaluate the effectiveness of this system to work with airlines operating at Da Nang International Terminal using self-check-in kiosks.

“When passengers save time doing procedures, they will have more time to experience the facilities and services at Da Nang International Terminal,” added Mr. Hau.

Quang Ninh struggles to pilot the night economy

Advertisements

Launched from the beginning of 2021, the Nighttime Economy Project (NEP) of Quang Ninh province focuses on the two cities of Ha Long and Uong Bi, but the selected locations have not yet shown effective results.

In 2021, Ha Long and Uong Bi were chosen as the first places for the development of the nighttime economy in the province. Specifically, the tourist area of Tuan Chau in Ha Long and the Legacy Yen Tu Resort in Uong Bi were designated for this purpose.

The NEP in Quang Ninh is built upon four main areas, namely: Culture, entertainment, and arts (cultural activities, theaters, music, entertainment programs, festivals, events, etc.); Food and beverage services (restaurants, food areas, bars, etc.); Shopping services (markets, shopping areas, etc.); Tourism services (visiting tourist attractions, cultural heritage sites, architectural landmarks, etc.). The designated timeframe for the nighttime economy runs from 6 pm to 6 am the following day for the pilot areas, with the aim of eventually transitioning towards a 24-hour economy for cities and urban areas with potential.

According to assessments, the chosen location of Legacy Yen Tu Resort is not suitable due to limited tourist traffic and high seasonality. Yen Tu meets the criterion of having a unique space, but other criteria require further testing and evaluation. In particular, many experts believe that selecting the special national historical site of Yen Tu is not appropriate for the pilot location.

For the Tuan Chau tourist area, Quang Ninh plans to develop five tourism models, combining visits to Ha Long Bay, entertainment, shopping, dining, and healthcare. Currently, the Tuan Chau Group has hired the consulting firm Kume Design Asia (Japan) to develop the project.

Until now, all nighttime activities have been concentrated in the Bai Chay tourist area because it has many restaurants and hotels, attracting a large number of visitors. Entertainment venues such as Ferris wheels, parks, bars, and nightclubs are also concentrated in Bai Chay, but nighttime activities usually end before 11 pm.

YouTube tests using AI to create video summaries

Advertisements

YouTube is experimenting with the idea of helping users make quicker decisions about which videos to follow on its platform.

Choosing to watch video content on a vast platform like YouTube can sometimes be challenging, especially for users without prior plans. Therefore, the company is testing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate video summaries to help users grasp the main points before making a selection.

Specifically, Android Police discovered in the latest content update on the support page that YouTube’s team stated video summaries would be automatically generated in English, and some users can already view them. These summaries are designed to provide an overview of the video content.

The YouTube team wrote: “We are starting to experiment with AI-generated video summaries on YouTube to make it easier for users to quickly review what a video is about and decide if it fits their needs. To start, you may see these summaries on video watch pages and in search.”

YouTube expects AI-generated summaries to help users decide whether to watch video content or not

However, YouTube has not shared screenshots of the interface for the AI-generated video summaries. The video-sharing platform confirmed that these summaries will appear both on video watch pages and in search results. The purpose of the AI-generated summaries is not to replace the original video descriptions provided by content creators.

Android Police noted that the feature is currently being tested with English videos, so it might be limited to certain regions.

Last July also saw YouTube implementing several changes, such as raising the price of the Premium subscription by $2 in the US. The largest video platform on the planet has also quietly experimented with a new feature called “Stable Volume,” but details about it have not been disclosed yet.

In May 2023, Bamboo Airways continued to lead the domestic aviation industry in on-time performance (OTP) with a rate of 95.6%.

According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Bamboo Airways had the highest on-time departure rate (OTP) at 95.6%, surpassing the industry’s average OTP of 88.3%.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air had OTP rates of 89.4% and 84.8% respectively. With these figures, Bamboo Airways maintained its position as the airline with the best on-time performance in the Vietnamese aviation industry.

Bamboo Airways leads in on-time flight rate in the first 5 months of 2023

During the first five months of 2023, Vietnamese airlines recorded 13,762 delayed flights, accounting for 11.7% of all flights, a 2-point increase compared to the same period in 2022. Among the airlines, Bamboo Airways had the lowest delayed flight rate at 4.4%, while Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air had delayed flight rates of 10.6% and 15.2% respectively.

The main contributing factors to flight delays for the airlines included issues with airport equipment and services, flight management and operations, airline-specific reasons, weather conditions, and aircraft returning late, among others. Notably, late aircraft returns were the primary reason for delayed departures during this period.

Flight cancellation rate of airlines in the 5-month period of 2023

The aviation industry is showing strong signs of recovery through growth indicators and expansion plans to meet the robust market demand. Statistics indicate that in the first six months of 2023, airlines transported 28 million passengers, a nearly 27% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Among them, around 7 million passengers were international travelers, while approximately 21 million were domestic passengers.

Since the beginning of the year, airlines have implemented robust plans to restore their domestic flight networks, resume operations, and introduce new international routes to connect key regions.

Vietnam Airlines has fully restored its domestic flight network and resumed operations on 90% of its international routes compared to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, Vietjet Air has opened ten new domestic and international routes. Most recently, Bamboo Airways achieved its goal of connecting all 22 commercial airports in Vietnam with the launch of the Hanoi – Ca Mau route.

Earlier, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam predicted that the total Vietnamese aviation market in 2023 would reach approximately 80 million passengers and 1.44 million tons of cargo, representing a respective 45.4% increase in passenger numbers and 15% increase in cargo compared to 2022.

Tourists return, travel companies, and hotels escape losses

Advertisements

Some travel companies and hotels have managed to escape losses as tourist numbers have increased significantly since the beginning of this year.

Hoi An Tourism Service Corporation is the unit operating the first and oldest hotel in Hoi An. According to their financial report for Q2/2023, they achieved a revenue of 26.3 billion VND, which is 2.7 times higher than the same period last year, and a post-tax profit of nearly 710 million VND compared to a loss of nearly 4.7 billion VND in the same period last year. Overall, in the first 6 months of this year, the company achieved a revenue of over 47.3 billion VND and a post-tax profit of nearly 839 million VND, compared to a loss of 11.69 billion VND in the same period last year.

The hotel business in Hoi An contributed more than 50% of the company’s total revenue, while the rest came from its subsidiary companies, such as Hoi An Tourism Limited Liability Company, Bai Bien Resort, and Tam Thanh Resort. Earlier, on April 27, the company’s HOT shares were delisted due to three consecutive years of losses. Currently, HOT shares are being traded on UPCoM.

Hotels and resorts have escaped losses when tourists increase again

Another company that managed to escape losses in the first 6 months of this year is Ninh Van Bay Tourism Real Estate Joint Stock Company, which owns some of the most luxurious resorts in Vietnam, including Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. Their report shows revenue of 184.7 billion VND, a 10.7% increase compared to the same period last year. The post-tax profit reached over 22 billion VND, with the parent company’s profit being more than 7.2 billion VND, whereas they suffered a loss of 12.9 billion VND in the same period last year.

The company evaluates that in 2023, domestic tourism and resort destinations, in particular, have shown signs of recovery and remarkable development. The business activities of the resorts in the first 6 months are very promising. Additionally, the company also recorded a return of 18.3 billion VND from the provision for capital contribution to Tan Phu Tourism Joint Stock Company.

On the other hand, Thanh Thanh Cong Tourism Joint Stock Company, which owns hotel chains like TTC Hotel, reported a revenue of over 303.6 billion VND in the first 6 months of this year, a 22.3% increase. In Q2/2023 alone, the company made a profit of nearly 7.8 billion VND, helping them achieve a profit of 1.11 billion VND in the first 6 months, escaping losses. However, compared to the first 6 months of 2022, Thanh Thanh Cong’s profit has decreased by nearly 50%.

The companies explained that in the context of the global economic downturn, rising interest rates, and increased corporate income tax expenses are the main factors contributing to the reduction of profits.

Lastly, Saigon Hotel Corporation, the unit managing Saigon hotels, one of the oldest hotels in Ho Chi Minh City, achieved a revenue of over 20.5 billion VND in the first 6 months of this year, more than double compared to the same period last year. Halong Bay Management Board proposes not to open more beaches

Advertisements

The Halong Bay Management Board has recently sent a document to the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism stating that no more beaches will be opened on Halong Bay.

According to the document, the Halong Bay Management Board emphasizes that, in order to preserve the integrity and protect the intrinsic values of the special national monument and the world’s natural heritage site, Halong Bay, they will not continue to develop any more tourist beaches in the bay.

The reason for this decision is due to the natural characteristics of the terrain, where most of the sandy beaches in Halong Bay are small and located at the foot of the islands, with steep slopes, submerged rocks, and strong currents. During high tides, most of these beaches are submerged.

The beach on Ti Top island is sometimes overloaded because there are so many tourists swimming in the sea

Developing these beaches into tourist spots would require adding more sand to ensure the safety of visitors and investing in beach infrastructure such as anchorage points, piers, changing rooms, restrooms, management facilities, observation stations, and more. These activities would have direct negative impacts on the integrity and intrinsic values of the special monument and the world’s natural heritage site, Halong Bay.

Currently, there is only one permitted bathing beach on Ti Top Island in Halong Bay. However, during peak times, this beach becomes overcrowded with a large number of people, all trying to squeeze in for a swim.

Currently, on Ha Long Bay, there is only 1 beach on Ti Top Island

Previously, the Halong Bay Management Board sent a letter to the People’s Committee of Halong City, Quang Ninh, proposing the exploitation of a group of beaches in the Tra San – Cong Do area.

According to the assessment of the Halong Bay Management Board, the Tra San – Cong Do area covers approximately 250 hectares and possesses several naturally beautiful sandy beaches, with abundant coral reefs and diverse underwater species, contributing significantly to the overall heritage of the site. However, this proposal has not yet been approved by the People’s Committee of Halong City.

FTX Wants Dubai Unit Removed From U.S. Bankruptcy Proceedings

Advertisements

Liquidating FTX Dubai under UAE law would make way for the timely distribution of any outstanding liabilities, the bankrupt estate argued in court filings.

Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX wants to exclude its Dubai unit from the wind-down proceedings in the U.S., according to court filings from Thursday.

When FTX filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. last November, it started Chapter 11 cases for 102 associated entities from around the world. FTX Dubai, set up in February 2022 and owned by the company’s European arm, was one of the entities roped into the proceedings.

But FTX Dubai didn’t conduct any business prior to the bankruptcy filing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and therefore “has no reasonable likelihood of rehabilitating its operations,” the bankrupt estate argued in the filing requesting the dismissal of the unit.

“Additionally, FTX Dubai is balance sheet solvent. Therefore, the Debtors believe that a solvent voluntary liquidation procedure in accordance with the laws of the United Arab Emirates would allow a timely distribution of the positive cash balance after payment of all outstanding liabilities and liquidation of all assets,” the filing said.

The estate argues that any court orders while FTX Dubai was part of the proceedings should stand, but that the dismissal requested “is necessary” to protect the debtors and authorize them to, for instance, pay pre-bankruptcy wages and salaries, along with other compensation, benefits and expenses to Dubai employees.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Aug. 23.

Crypto Traders Might Want to Track Ether ‘Slippage’ Indicator

Advertisements

Hyblock’s slippage indicator has consistently marked short-term trend changes in the second-largest cryptocurrency this year.

Slippage – the difference between the price a trader expects to pay and the price they actually pay – can be used to identify changes in market trends.

Data tracked by Hyblock Capital shows spikes in slippage in the ether market frequently mark price peaks and troughs.

Traders use several technical and fundamental indicators to navigate the speedy and risky crypto market.

They can consider adding one more to the list: A gauge of “slippage” in the ether market. The indicator has consistently identified trend changes in the price of the second-largest cryptocurrency this year.

Slippage is the difference between the price at which a trading order is executed and the price at which it was requested. It occurs in fast-moving, highly volatile market conditions or when liquidity is low.

In both cases, the price moves faster than the time it takes for the order to fill either because of the volatility or the lack of supply, and can work in favor of or against traders. For instance, if a purchase order is executed at a price higher than the quoted price, it’s the case of high (or unfavorable) slippage.

A spike in slippage in the ether market has historically presaged trend changes, data provided by Crypto research firm Hyblock Capital show.

The chart shows ether’s USDT-denominated price and aggregated maximum slippage – the highest daily slippage on a single market order. The aggregated max slippage includes data from crypto exchanges Binance, BitMEX, Bybit, Bitfinex, Deribit, Huobi, OKX, Phemex, and quarterly futures listed on Huobi and OKX.

Ether’s late 2021 bull market peak and the December 2022 bear market bottom coincided with a sudden and notable increase in slippage. Similar spikes in slippage have marked interim tops and bottoms this year.

Hong Kong’s first license to a cryptocurrency exchange to serve retail customers has gone to HashKey Exchange under the city’s new crypto rules that aim to make the region a crypto hub.

HashKey Exchange, a virtual asset exchange based in Hong Kong which is part of HashKey Group, a digital asset financial services group, announced the development saying it can now expand its business scope from serving professional investors to retail users.

“As an existing Type 1 and Type 7 licenses holder, HashKey Exchange successfully underwent a simplified process to obtain the licence upgrade … to expand its business scope from serving professional investors to retail users, fulfilling market demand for a licensed platform that offers users a safer and simpler process for buying and storing cryptocurrencies.” the exchange said.

What are the best and worst airplane seats?

Advertisements

Which seat on the plane is the best, whether it’s the seats in business class; And which seat on the plane is considered the worst?

Choosing a good seat on the plane helps increase your sense of flight satisfaction, especially when you’re going through a multi-hour journey. A good location provides the most comfort, comfort and safety. Therefore, when buying airline tickets, many passengers spend extra money to buy the seats they want.

So which seat on the plane is the best and the worst? The Insider site lists the following positions based on the experience of longtime flight attendants.

What is the best seat on the plane?

The rows of seats near the exit door

If you sit in this row, you will easily get out when the plane crashes. Spacious legroom, tall people can sit comfortably.

Many people think that the row near the exit door is the best position on the plane because it will be seated near the beautiful flight attendants.

Sitting in near the exit seat, you will have to assist the flight attendant to open the door in an emergency. Therefore, this row of seats is often prioritized for healthy people. The elderly, young children and pregnant women are not usually accommodated here.

Rows of seats with only two seats

Many small planes have only two seats per row. According to the flight attendants, these are good seats as one will be placed by the window, the other in the aisle. Thus, each person’s space will be more comfortable and no one has to sit in the middle – the least desirable position. However, that means on this plane, every seat is very good, so to answer the question of which seat on the plane is the best, other factors need to be considered.

Seats at the front of the plane

The front seats are usually smoother, less bumpy than the seats at the back of the plane. That’s not to mention because it’s close to the door, so it’s very convenient for passengers to get on and off the plane, without having to wait long. When flight attendants serve food, drinks or cold towels, they will be served first

The rows of seats in the middle

This seat is considered the quietest if the plane is going through turbulence, because it is in the center of gravity. However, this seat has the disadvantage of being noisier because it is closer to the engine.

 Seats by the window

In terms of beautiful scenery, this is the best seat on the plane and the most chosen by many people. It has a beautiful view, you can watch the clouds and the scenery at the take-off and landing places. You can also lean your head against the wall to sleep peacefully, undisturbed by the people sitting next to them when they want to leave or turn around.

Which seat on the plane is the worst?

Middle seat

In any row, the middle seat is also the worst seat. People sitting here will feel uncomfortable because they are sandwiched between two other people, the armrests on either side are often occupied by “neighbors” and sometimes they have to sit with their arms crossed in front of their chest. According to airline etiquette, the person in the middle seat should be given priority to place their hands on the side rails.

If you take a wide-body plane, each row has 9 seats divided into three rows, when you must use the middle seat, you should choose the middle seat in the middle row so that no one will disturb you if someone wants to get up to pick up things or use the house toilet.

Seats right in front or behind the bulkhead

The seats in front of the bulkhead often don’t recline for comfort. The seat in the middle of the plane is often preferred for families with young children because the space in front is enough to place a crib. If you don’t want to hear crying during the flight, you can consider this position.

Seat near the toilet

In addition to the problem of smell, when sitting here, you are often bothered by people standing in line waiting to use the toilet. This place is therefore noisier than other locations. People sitting in the aisles of this area are often touched by passers-by, affecting their sleep. The only advantage is that you don’t need to queue if you want to go to the bathroom.

The last seats of the plane

This location is bumpy, noisy, far from the center. This is also usually the seat near the toilet, right in front of the partition.

Tan Son Nhat Airport tests 10 automatic passport scanners

Advertisements

On August 1st, the automatic passport scanner system at Tan Son Nhat International Airport has been put into operation. The international terminal now has 10 scanners – 5 for exiting and 5 for entry.

As per the Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper, the fast passport scanning system has been imported from Europe and has been adopted by numerous airports globally to lessen airport congestion.

According to a spokesperson from the Border Gate Police at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the new scanner system is expected to decrease the duration of immigration security checks to just 30 seconds per person.

During the trial period, the scanner system applies to citizens holding Vietnamese passports upon entry. Passengers who possess an electronic passport with a chip can pass through the automatic immigration gate, while those without one must register manually.

For exiting of the country, this trial period is limited to Vietnamese persons holding diplomatic or official passports. People with ordinary passports must have an APEC card. Foreign visitors who want to exit by automatic door must have a permanent residence card or a temporary residence card.

According to a representative from the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the introduction of an automatic passport scanning system will enhance the movement of passengers through security checks and reduce the time it takes to enter and exit the airport, without compromising on security measures or stamping procedures.

A new passport scanner system is being installed at five international airports, including Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai, which are two of the busiest gateway airports.
