Vietnam’s Stock Market Gears Up for Another Influx of Foreign Funds

Vietnam’s stock market is set to receive a significant boost with the impending investment of another hundred billion from a foreign fund.

The upcoming CGS Fullgoal Vietnam 30 Sector Cap ETF listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX) on August 25 is expected to raise a minimum of USD 5 million (~ VND 110 billion). The fund aims to invest in Vietnamese stocks and closely replicate the performance of the iEdge Vietnam 30 Sector Cap Index.

The iEdge Vietnam 30 Sector Cap Index is specifically designed to track the 30 largest and most liquid companies listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE). The index takes into account the free-floating market capitalization, foreign ownership limits, and imposes a maximum share weight limit of 10% and a maximum industry limit of 25%.

The top 10 largest stocks in the index basket, as of June 14, are dominated by financial groups, featuring three securities companies: SSI, VNDirect (VND), Vietcap (VCI), and two banks: BIDV (BID), SHB. The remaining stocks include familiar names in the VN30 basket, such as Vinhomes (VHM), Hoa Phat (HPG), Vinamilk (VNM), Vingroup (VIC), and Masan (MSN).

The CGS Fullgoal Vietnam 30 Sector Cap ETF is not the first foreign ETF to enter Vietnam’s stock market. Several well-known ETFs, including Fubon FTSE Vietnam ETF, VanEck Vietnam ETF, FTSE Vietnam ETF, and KIM Growth VNFinSelect ETF, have already established their presence. Additionally, there are numerous notable domestic ETFs such as DCVFM VNDiamond ETF, DCVFM VN30 ETF, DCVFM VNMidcap ETF, SSIAM VNFinLead ETF, FPT CAPITAL VNX50 ETF, and MAFM VNDiamond ETF.

Although ETFs have been instrumental in attracting foreign capital into Vietnam in recent years, the global capital withdrawal wave has somewhat slowed down the inflow of funds in the past few months. Some ETFs have faced challenges in attracting investments and even experienced capital withdrawals.

Despite these short-term fluctuations, experts predict that ETFs will become an explosive trend in the future. Vietnam’s stable macro outlook and the high growth potential of listed companies are expected to attract a strong return of foreign investors, particularly after the market’s anticipated upgrade.

Hanoi is about to have a “sleepless” entertainment complex

Advertisements

According to a newly released project from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on boosting night tourist products, Hanoi would build a distinct night entertainment complex along with Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

This complex, together with historical and cultural tourism, will form a “piece” of a full image of tourism in the capital.

In a few months, when the entertainment and entertainment complex is put into operation in the East of the Capital, on the river about more than 800m long there will be a show on the boat, with a combination of modern sound and light.

The special thing about the show The Grand Voyage is that it may be viewed from any place. This is also Vietnam’s first boat show.

In addition to the scene display, guests may engage in a variety of other activities in the “sleepless” entertainment complex in the East of Hanoi. This not only serves the demands of the capital and neighboring regions, but it also answers the problem of tourists not knowing “where to go, what to play” at night when they visit Hanoi.

According to Brad Smith, the President of Microsoft, companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure its safety, security, and human oversight. The Frontier Model Forum represents an important step in bringing the technology industry together to enhance the responsibility of AI and address challenges to benefit everyone.

The forum members stated that their main goal is to promote research in AI safety, such as developing evaluation standards for models, encouraging the deployment of responsible advanced AI models, discussing trust and risks of AI with policymakers and scholars, and helping research the applications of AI in areas like climate change mitigation and cancer detection.

The forum’s launch comes at a time when countries are pushing for AI governance processes. On July 21, technology companies, including the founding members of the Frontier Model Forum, agreed to new AI safeguards after a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

The parties committed to “sealing” AI content to make it easier to detect things like deepfakes and enable independent experts to verify AI models.

Earlier, on July 18, the United Nations Security Council held its first meeting on AI. During the meeting, UK Foreign Minister James Cleverly remarked that AI “will fundamentally change all aspects of human life.” He emphasized the urgency to “shape the governance of transformative technologies because AI knows no boundaries.

Copyright dispute: VCPMC requests revocation of BlackPink’s performance license in Vietnam

Advertisements

“In the event that the music copyright license is not granted prior to the program’s performance, VCPMC requests that IME refrain from performing musical works from KOMCA’s repertoire,” VCPMC demanded.

The Vietnam Center for the Protection of Music Copyright (VCPMC) recently informed that on July 21st, the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) sent a letter to VCPMC to assert and request cooperation in preventing any infringement of copyright for musical works belonging to KOMCA’s members during the BlackPink group’s performance in Vietnam.

Blackpink band.

The Chairman of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) stated the following in the letter addressed to Mr. Dang Dinh Tam – Chairman of IME Music Company Limited, and Mr. Lim Kean Hwa – Director of IME Music Company Limited:

“Through this letter, KOMCA confirms certain aspects that the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) has authorized VCPMC in accordance with the mutual agreement between KOMCA/VCPMC. This agreement was initially signed between KOMCA and VCPMC on May 1st, 2009.

Under this agreement, among other provisions, KOMCA grants VCPMC exclusive rights to license public performances of all musical works in KOMCA’s repertoire to be performed within VCPMC’s territory, including but not limited to works composed by KOMCA’s member authors.

VCPMC is the sole entity in Vietnam authorized at this time. We are aware that many musical works owned by KOMCA’s members will be performed in Hanoi, Vietnam on July 29-30, 2023.

According to our agreement concerning the rights delegation to our members, KOMCA manages the delegated copyrights so that KOMCA can collect copyright fees on behalf of our members. Also, under this copyright delegation agreement, our members are not allowed to grant third parties the use or enforcement of the copyrights that have been delegated to KOMCA.

KOMCA desires that VCPMC takes decisive steps against users who undermine the interests of the authors represented by KOMCA by not fully complying with VCPMC’s licensing terms. We trust that VCPMC will take necessary measures (including legal actions in court) to ensure licensing from businesses or individuals using KOMCA’s musical works. In case the music copyright license is not granted before the performance, KOMCA respectfully requests that IME Music Company ceases the performance of musical works from KOMCA’s repertoire.”

Previously, upon receiving information about the BlackPink group’s tour in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the end of July, VCPMC had contacted IME Music Company to request permission and payment of copyrights before the event in accordance with copyright laws. However, as of July 19, 2023, IME had not yet fulfilled their copyright obligations. On July 21, 2023, a meeting involving the Vietnamese state management authorities was held to address the existing issues.

To safeguard the rights and interests of authors – owners of the works, and in adherence to the mutual cooperation commitments between VCPMC and KOMCA, as well as the final letter sent by KOMCA to IME, VCPMC requests that the state management agencies revoke the performance license of the BlackPink group organized by IME Music Company as they have severely violated copyright. This action is contrary to the commitments made with VCPMC and the directives issued by the Vietnamese state management authorities before the event.

On July 27th, VCPMC confirmed that they had received an email from someone named Pham Tam – Project Manager of IME Music Company Limited, stating the following content: “Firstly, IME Vietnam would like to express gratitude to VCPMC for actively reaching out and assisting IME Vietnam in complying with music copyright regulations.

As of now, we have not reached an agreement with the artist management company regarding the copyright of the songs in the program as they fall under the copyright of YG Company, the entity providing the performing artists. IME Vietnam agrees to pay for the song copyrights and comply with Vietnamese law. If during the process, IME Vietnam can provide an authorization/permission to use song copyrights in Hanoi, we request VCPMC’s guidance to mutually execute this.”

VCPMC asserts that up to the current time, IME has not fulfilled their copyright obligations as agreed upon during the bilateral work process. All 13 works, approved by document number 2438/SVHTT-QLNT of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, which fall under VCPMC’s protection scope, were licensed through a bilateral contract with various organizations. Among them, 12 works belong to the members of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA).

“In the event that the music copyright license is not granted prior to the program’s performance, VCPMC requests that IME refrain from performing musical works from KOMCA’s repertoire,” VCPMC reiterated its demand.

Meta Remains Committed to the Metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg Says

Advertisements

Meta’s pivot cost the social media giant billions of dollars, but the company’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the firm isn’t giving up on the metaverse anytime soon.

Meta (META) hasn’t given up on the metaverse, despite a very public pivot to artificial intelligence.

“Our investments in AI continue. We remain fully committed to the Metaverse vision as well. We’ve been working on both of these two major priorities for many years in parallel now, and in many ways the two areas are overlapping and complementary,” Mark Zuckerberg said in an earnings call.

The focus on the metaverse hasn’t been profitable for the social media giant as it continues to lose billions of dollars due to the initiative. During 2022, Meta’s Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) division, which is responsible for metaverse, lost $13.7 billion on revenue of $2.2 billion, up from a loss of $10.2 billion on revenue of $2.3 billion in 2021.

“This is an ambitious long-term horizon, multi-faceted roadmap. There are lots of components to the Reality Labs portfolio across VR, AR, Metaverse, social platforms, neural interfaces, and we really have a long-term time horizon for evaluating the return on our investments here,” Zuckerberg continued. “I can’t guarantee you that I’m going to be right about this bet. I do think that this is the direction that the world is going in.”

In its most recent earnings, Meta reported a fiscal second-quarter net income of $7.79 billion, up from $6.7 billion in the previous year, with revenue climbing 11% to $32 billion.

Daily active users for Facebook and Meta’s family of apps, including Instagram, also saw an increase of 5% and 7%, respectively. Meta’s Threads app – designed as a Twitter replacement – has experienced a 60% drop in active users from its launch week, according to a report from Similarweb.

The stock closed over 1% higher at $294.47 on Wednesday and was trading at nearly $319 in after hours trading.

Bitcoin, Ether CME Futures Saw Record Participation From Large Traders in Q2

Advertisements

Bitcoin futures institutional interest continued to increase throughout the quarter as investors sought regulated venues/products to hedge rising market volatility and manage risk and exposure, CME said.

Derivatives giant Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s (CME) regulated bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) futures saw record participation from large traders in the second quarter.

The number of large open interest holders, or entities holding at least 25 bitcoin futures contracts, averaged a record 107 in the second quarter, the CME said in an email to CoinDesk. Ether’s so-called large open interest holders averaged 62 through the second quarter.

“Bitcoin futures institutional interest continued to increase throughout the quarter as investors sought regulated venues/products to hedge rising market volatility and manage risk and exposure,” the exchange said, explaining the robust participation from large traders.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regulates the CME futures. The standard bitcoin futures contract is equivalent to 5 BTC, while the micro contract is sized at one-tenth of 1 BTC. The standard ether futures have a contract size of 50 ETH, while micro futures are equivalent to one-tenth of 1 ETH.

The CME’s regulated and cash-settled futures have long been a preferred choice for institutions looking to gain exposure to the cryptocurrency without having to own it.

The record participation from large holders came as top cryptocurrencies extended the first quarter rally. Bitcoin rose 7% in three months to June, confirming an 84% rise for the year’s first half. Ether gained 61% in the first six months.

The demand for hedging tools also lifted trading volumes and open interest in BTC and ETH futures and options to all-time highs in the first half, CME said.

Trading volume refers to the number of contracts transacted on a given day. Open interest refers to the number of contracts active at any given time. An increase in open interest represents an influx of new money into the market.

Open interest in standard bitcoin futures contracts averaged a record 14,800 contracts through the first half, a 15% rise compared to 2022. Meanwhile, open interest in bitcoin options averaged a record 9,400 contracts, confirming an impressive 175% rise versus 2022.

The CME plans to list futures tied to the ether-bitcoin ratio later this month, subject to regulatory approval. The exchange has recently expanded its options product suite by listing weekly bitcoin and ether expiries.

Fed raised interest rates to the highest level in 22 years

Advertisements

After a one-month pause, Fed resumed raising interest rates and signaled further tightening later this year.

On July 26, after a two-day policy meeting, the Fed announced to raise interest rates by 25 basis points (0.25%). The reference interest rate in the US is currently around 5.25-5.5% – the highest since 2001.

The Fed considers the job market to remain strong and the economy to grow at a “moderate” rate. This assessment is more upbeat than in June, when Fed officials called growth “modest”.

Last month, the Fed paused the tightening process to assess the state of the economy after the collapse of three local banks earlier this year. To date, this agency has increased interest 11 times since March 2022, in order to cool down inflation, which is still double the target.

The Fed’s interest rate applies to interbank overnight loans. While this isn’t what consumers pay, it can still affect the loan and savings rates they come into contact with on a daily basis, such as taking out a home loan, buying a car, or using a credit card.

Fed officials also forecast another rate hike this year. Inflation in the US has cooled down in recent months. This is good news for both people and businesses in this country. However, the Fed’s announcement affirmed that “inflation is still accelerating” and that the agency “remains very concerned about inflation risks”.

In order to decide on the appropriate level of tightening to bring inflation gradually back to 2%, the committee will make an overall assessment of monetary policy, the lag of its impact on economic activity and inflation, as well as other factors. other economic and financial developments,” the Fed said in a statement.

The agency’s preferred inflation gauge – the Personal Consumption Price Index (PCE) – rose 3.8% in May compared with the same period a year ago, down significantly from the previous month. However, core PCE is almost the same as April. The US Department of Commerce will release June data this week.

Fed officials still keep the option to raise interest rates again, in case inflation is stronger than forecast. However, the timing of the rise is still a question mark. Even this may not happen and the Fed will move to a new phase of the fight against inflation, which is to keep interest rates stable until inflation reaches the right target.

Investors are still betting on the possibility that the Fed will soon stop raising interest rates and the US will have a soft landing – inflation to 2% without causing the economy to decelerate sharply. However, Fed officials emphasized they will make decisions based on the data and adjust each session. The next Fed meeting will be in September.

“We still intend to tighten policy until we are confident that inflation is cooling down sustainably, towards the 2% target. We are also ready to tighten more if appropriate. The road is still long.” “, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said in a press conference.

He said the Fed will probably raise, or leave rates unchanged in September. However, Powell also warned that “will only cut rates when it feels comfortable and that won’t happen this year”.

The Fed chair still expects the economy to have a soft landing and said economists at the Fed no longer forecast the prospect of a recession.

The Ukraine Conflict: A Strategy for NATO’s Disposal of Outdated Weapons

Advertisements

According to Pierre Henrot, a military expert and former senior artillery officer in NATO, member countries of the alliance have been supplying Ukraine with weapons that are outdated and have been neglected for decades.

Henrot stated that this process of providing obsolete weaponry to Ukraine serves a dual purpose for NATO countries. They effectively offload their oldest equipment to Ukraine while also taking the opportunity to equip their own militaries with modern, next-generation weapons. A clear example of this is Poland, a staunch supporter of Kiev, which sent all of its Soviet-era tanks to Ukraine and, in return, received a brand new batch of Abrams tanks exclusively for the Polish army from the United States.

Several other countries have also contributed retired equipment, such as Germany’s 88 Leopard 1 tanks withdrawn from service in 2003 and France’s AMX 10-RC light tank developed in the early 1970s, which was decommissioned by the French army.

One concerning case highlighted by the expert is France’s delivery of the VAB four-wheeled armored personnel carrier, which has been in service since 1979 and is notorious for getting stuck in autumn mud and posing logistical challenges, leading some to nickname it the “mobile steel coffin” for the Ukrainian infantry.

Additionally, countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania have provided Ukraine with their outdated Soviet-era MiG or Sukhoi fighters.

Henrot emphasized that besides the careless provision of outdated weaponry, another significant issue arises from the incompatibility of spare parts and ammunition for these weapons, creating logistical and technical difficulties for the Ukrainian army.

Despite these shortcomings, certain weapons supplied by Western countries have proved useful and of high quality for the Ukrainian army. These include small arms, bulletproof vests, night vision systems, and American-made missiles like the Stinger and Javelin, which are formidable assets for Ukrainian infantry.

Nevertheless, Henrot noted that Western countries often lack the capacity to produce the specific weaponry required by the Ukrainian military. Challenges arise due to the wide variety of calibers and the hesitancy of military contractors to start production without solid, long-term contracts from Western governments.

The recent contentious decision by the US to send cluster munitions to Ukraine is seen by Henrot as indicative of a similar problem. It appears that the US has openly admitted that these munitions represent their last remaining stock and that they lack additional supplies to deliver.

Khái quát về CS:GO

CS:GO bao gồm hai phe đối lập: Kẻ khủng bố và Cảnh sát đặc nhiệm.
