Craig Wright Must Pay $516K to Pursue Case Against Kraken, Coinbase: UK Judge

Wright claims he’s Bitcoin White Paper author Satoshi Nakamoto and holds intellectual property rights on numerous cryptocurrencies

Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist who claims he is blockchain innovator Satoshi Nakamoto and owns the concepts underpinning Bitcoin, must pay 400,000 British pounds ($516,000) in security for legal costs to pursue claims against crypto exchanges Coinbase and Kraken.

James Mellor, a judge at the England and Wales High Court, said he wasn’t convinced Wright would be able to fund legal costs, pointing to previous allegedly inconsistent statements about Wright’s financial position in a judgment issued Tuesday.

The evidence “does not persuade me” that Wright or his investment company have liquid assets to meet potentially substantial legal costs, Mellor said, adding that he’ll strike out the action within weeks if security isn’t put in place.

Wright says he owns the goodwill in the term “Bitcoin,” and that Coinbase and Kraken, by allowing trading in bitcoin (BTC) and bitcoin cash (BCH), are damaging the brand of rival cryptocurrency bitcoin satoshi vision (BSV).

Mellor cited statements made by Wright that he had made himself financially “untouchable” by using a trust to shift assets and testimony allegedly inconsistent with that given in parallel U.S. court proceedings involving former business partner Ira Kleiman.

In a Florida case due to be heard later Wednesday, Wright is due to defend himself against charges he should be held in contempt of court for failing to fully disclose information needed to resolve a dispute with Kleiman’s estate over the ownership of $143 million in cryptocurrency. Wright has argued he doesn’t have financial information about his wife Ramona Ang and that his own witness statements filed in UK courts constitute “hearsay.”

In October, an Oslo court ruled Twitter user Hodlonaut had been within his rights to post 2019 tweets calling Wright a “fraud” and “scammer” for saying he was Nakamoto, author of the 2008 Bitcoin White Paper. An appeal of that case will be heard later this year.

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Kraken told CoinDesk that the ruling “is an important win in our defense against Wright’s claims to control Bitcoin.”

“Satoshi never meant for a single person to control Bitcoin, which is why he released the Bitcoin software under open-source licenses for the world’s benefit,” the spokesperson said.

Coinbase and lawyers for Wright did not immediately respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment.

Japan: The Vietnamese man ran to help the elderly man just as a high-speed train approached.

Advertisements

In the video, an old Japanese man on a bicycle falls into the track accidentally. Because of his age, the bicycle collapsed on him, preventing him from getting up and moving to another location. When a young man driving a car noticed the old man had fallen and heard the train approaching, he jumped out of the car and hurried to help.

He lifted the old guy, his bicycle, and his stuff from the tracks. Just a few seconds later, the train passed at a high pace, and several people went to find out about what was happening.

Nguyen Duy Tan (30, born in Khanh Hoa) is the man who saved the elderly man in the video above. The occurrence occurred not long ago in Kanagawa (Japan).

“When I ran out, I felt obliged to get him out as soon as possible. The old man was between the ages of 70 and 75. I observed him getting crushed by a bicycle at the moment, attempting but unable to escape. I just lifted the bike and took him out, believing that the elderly man’s safety came first. In that situation, everyone would do the same thing as me, nothing special,” Mr. Tan recalled.

Mr. Tan was praised and rewarded by the company after taking action to save live

Singapore High Court Declares Crypto as Property in Case Involving Bybit

Advertisements

The ruling held that a crypto asset is a “thing in action” enforceable via court orders.

Singapore’s High Court has recognised crypto as a property capable of being held on trust, in a case involving Seychelles-based exchange Bybit and a contractor, according to a court judgement published on Tuesday.

Bybit brought a case against Ho Kai Xin, claiming that in breach of her employment contract, she abused her position to transfer over 4.2 million USDT (stablecoin issued by Tether) to addresses owned and controlled by her. Ho also transferred a quantity of fiat currency to her own bank account.

“Like any other thing in action, USDT is capable of being held on trust,” Judge Philip Jeyaretnam, who presided over the case, said.

The judge’s ruling also referred to a public consultation response published by the Monetary Authority of Singapore on 3 July 2023, which “reflect the reality that it is possible in practice to identify and segregate digital assets,” supporting the view that they can be held on trust.

The judge added that “the holder of a crypto asset has in principle an incorporeal right of property recognisable by the common law as a thing in action and so enforceable in court.” He acknowledged that this conclusion might have an “element of circularity” about it, it is “not strikingly different from how the law approaches other social constructs, such as money.”

“It is only because people generally accept the exchange value of shells or beads or differently printed paper notes that they become currency,” Jeyaretnam said.

“While some people are sceptical of the value of crypto assets, it is worth keeping in mind that value is not inherent in an object,” he added.

The exchange sought a declaration that Ho was holding both the USDT and fiat currency on trust for Bybit. Ho blamed her cousin Jason Teo for stealing the assets from ByBit without her knowledge, claiming that only he owned and controlled those addresses.

The judge accepted on a balance of probabilities that “Jason does not exist (or at any rate did not play the role asserted for him by Ms Ho),” and ordered that Ho transfer assets back to Bybit.

Streamer Do Mixi and his fans draw a map of Vietnam at an international event on r/place

Advertisements

R/Place is a large Reddit social networking event that takes place once a year and is viewed by millions of Reddit members worldwide. This is a free white area where individuals from all around the world may join together to create pixelated artwork for their community. Each individual will be assigned 1 pixel (arbitrary color) on this white area every 5 minutes to construct their own creation.

Streamer Do Mixi’s map of Vietnam illustrated with the Hoang Sa – Truong Sa archipelago has recently taken a prominent place on R/Place. This is something that Vietnamese Reddit users have never done while competing with online communities from powerful nations such as France, the United States, and Germany, or well-known Streamer organizations such as IshowSpeed and xQc.

The online community joins hands to complete the map of Vietnam

Keeping the content as Vietnam’s sovereignty over its seas and islands, the Mixigaming Tribe’s motto to all friends across the globe is “Truong Sa, Hoang Sa belong to Vietnam” over a red background with a yellow star reflecting the country’s national flag.

Furthermore, Streamer Do Mixi and his community skillfully included a texture imitating the surface of the Bronze Drum (Heger I Drum) in the work. In addition, the Mixigaming Tribe community has effectively drawn the picture of “Tri – Cong – Nong – Binh” (Intellectuals – Workers – Farmers – Soldiers), which is frequently seen on Vietnamese promotional banners.

And after nearly 9 hours of livestream building and protecting against vandalism until the last moment, FA chat channel and streamer Do Mixi have completed the picture with a Vietnamese identity and occupied an extremely prominent position on R/Place.

The BlackPink concert “helps to improve the image of Hanoi – Vietnam as a safe and friendly destination.”

The Hanoi People’s Committee issued a written notification concerning BLACKPINK’s global tour program in Hanoi on July 25. As a result, the concert will have two music nights on July 29 and 30, with a total of around 67,000 people in two nights.

This was deemed an international and large-scale cultural event by the Hanoi People’s Committee. BlackPink is a well-known and well-liked Korean music group among young people.

The program has been held in many areas of the world, and if it is successfully held in Hanoi, it will help to improve the image of Hanoi – Vietnam as a safe and welcoming destination for friends from all over the world.

According to the resolution of the Hanoi Party Committee, this is an opportunity to promote tourism, emphasize Vietnam’s ability to manage large events, and at the same time, it is an opportunity for Hanoi to share and develop the cultural industry.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has tasked departments, branches, and localities with directing the City Police and the Capital High Command to develop a plan to ensure absolute security and safety, as well as the Department of Health, to develop a plan to ensure the health and prevent epidemics, in order for the two concerts to be a success with approximately 67,000 spectators in attendance.

Is Blackpink’s show a necessary event for the advancement of Vietnam’s entertainment industry?

From here, Vietnam’s tourist business will gain when it opens the door to music tourism in Vietnam, attracting tens of thousands of fans from across the world.

The business also noted that the decision of a world-famous group such as BlackPink to host a concert in Hanoi is a tribute to the city’s economic, political, and social stability, infrastructure, and capacity to arrange significant international events.

UK Information Commission to Make Inquiries About Worldcoin

The firm has claimed that they comply with “very, very local and very specific rules and regulations in each of the markets where there’s an Orb.”

The U.K.’s data watchdog, the Information Commissions Office (ICO), will examine Worldcoin, a project by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

“We note the launch of WorldCoin in the U.K. and will be making further enquiries,” a spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office told CoinDesk.

“Organizations also need to have a clear lawful basis to process personal data. Where they are relying on consent, this needs to be freely given and capable of being withdrawn without detriment,” the watchdog added.

Worldcoin which launched on Monday describes itself as a digital passport that can help holders prove they are human. The project already had 2 million users from its beta launch.

The firm has claimed that they comply with “very, very local and very specific rules and regulations in each of the markets where there’s an Orb.”

Worldcoin representatives did not respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment at the time of publication.

Drowning in Debt: The Price of Following Music Idols

Advertisements

Young people are facing significant debt issues due to borrowing money to purchase tickets for concerts, particularly those of the famous K-pop girl group BlackPink.

The national financial management agency must remain vigilant about the increasing use of online loans among young people, which is resulting in a substantial amount of debt. Many of them find themselves unable to repay these loans, solely because they wanted to attend concerts of their favorite foreign idols, according to a report by the SCMP.

For instance, in November 2022, approximately 70,000 people queued for hours to buy tickets for Born Pink, a concert that was part of BlackPink’s world tour in Jakarta, Indonesia. Similarly, the upcoming Music of the Spheres world tour by the British band Coldplay also saw all its tickets sold out for the Jakarta show scheduled for November.

Conversely, the situation for BlackPink’s concert in Hanoi on July 29-30 is not favorable. Many ticket-holders are selling their tickets at a loss, hoping to recover as much as they can. However, it is essential to recognize that selling out tickets doesn’t always indicate a positive outcome.

The love for international music, particularly the chance to see famous artists like BlackPink and Coldplay, has created a great opportunity for music lovers in Indonesia. This has significantly contributed to the local entertainment tax revenue, as records from the Ministry of Finance and the MUC Consulting report show an increase in concert events in recent months.

While this may seem like good news, there’s a downside to it. According to Bloomberg, some local concert-goers are resorting to online loans to finance their attendance at these concerts. As a result, the Financial Services Authority has issued a warning to Indonesians, advising them against using “buy now, pay later” services solely for purchasing concert tickets.

This caution comes as the country’s outstanding loans through digital platforms have seen a significant increase, reaching 51.5 trillion rupiah in May, marking a 28% rise from the previous year. The regulator has also highlighted the risk of falling victim to scams by using fake, high-interest loan apps. These fraudulent practices, especially during the challenging economic times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, exploit people who are already facing financial hardships.

[inline_related_posts title=”You Might Be Interested In” title_align=”left” style=”list” number=”3″ align=”none” ids=”” by=”tags” orderby=”rand” order=”DESC” hide_thumb=”no” thumb_right=”no” views=”no” date=”yes” grid_columns=”2″ post_type=”” tax=””]

The rise of digital lending and financial technology has indeed provided more access to loans for individuals from low-income backgrounds. However, it has also led to a surge in consumerism and reckless spending, creating a risky financial situation in a country like Indonesia, which has a substantial young population.

With more than half of Indonesia’s 270 million people aged between 18-39, this generation plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future. The issue at hand is not merely about their penchant for lavish spending; it is also rooted in the fact that around 90 million people in Indonesia do not have access to traditional banking services, leading them towards riskier digital lending options.

As e-commerce continues to grow rapidly, Indonesia has become the world’s 11th largest e-commerce market, with a projected sales figure of over $44.8 billion for that year. This growth can be attributed, in part, to the burgeoning middle-class population of nearly 52 million people, according to the World Bank.

It is essential for the government to address this situation with a two-fold approach: serving the unbanked population while also educating the tech-savvy younger generation about the potential risks associated with financial technology. This way, Indonesia can continue to enjoy its booming music scene, attracting top music groups like BlackPink and Coldplay, without compromising the financial well-being of its youth, who are instrumental in building the nation’s future.

According to a United Nations report, the music industry is experiencing significant growth in the creative economy, primarily due to the application of digitalization.

Amidst the pandemic, Indonesia has emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s leading streaming hubs for Spotify. Over 50% of workers in the music industry are utilizing e-commerce to enhance production and expand their markets.

This trend extends to other sectors in the country as well. In terms of Internet users and e-commerce retail sales, Indonesia has outperformed neighboring countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand in 2021.

While digital transformation has undoubtedly brought about numerous benefits and enriched people’s lives, it has also fostered a concerning culture of “get rich on trends.”

A prevalent habit among many individuals is showing off their wealth online, which can lead to an increase in violent crimes and create public unrest, particularly when aimed at elected officials.

In March, The Jakarta Post reported that Indonesian President Joko Widodo urged civil servants to refrain from flaunting their wealth on social media.

Whether it involves flaunting newfound wealth or people purchasing concert tickets they can’t afford, the social, psychological, and cultural impacts of the fintech and digital revolution remain areas that we have yet to fully comprehend.

However, one thing is certain: this poses a formidable challenge for governments not only in Indonesia but across the developing world, SCMP reported.

Dogecoin Bumps 10% on X Payments Speculation, DOGE Futures Traders Lose $10M

Advertisements

Crypto traders are buying up DOGE in hopes of the token playing a larger role on Twitter, which rebranded as “everything app” X on Monday.

Dogecoin (DOGE) rose for the second consecutive day as speculations of the memecoin playing a bigger role on the newly-rebranded X platform, fuelled the rally.

CoinGecko data shows DOGE surged as much as 10% to over 7.7 cents in the past 24 hours, with trading volumes at $2.3 billion. Most of these volumes came from the South Korean exchange UpBit – known for attracting speculative plays – against the Korean won trading pair.

Futures traders lost nearly $10 million betting on and against dogecoin’s price movements, Coinglass data shows.

Analysts say Twitter, which rebranded to everything app X on Monday, could soon accept doge tokens in the coming months given owner Elon Musk’s seeming infatuation with the meme coin.

“The speculation is that advertisers could be able to pay DOGE for ads and for other uses on Twitter,” Kryptomon Chief Marketing Officer Tomer Nuni explained to CoinDesk in a Telegram message.

“We have seen the same happening when Tesla revealed the ability to pay for its goods with DOGE. So the speculation could be around Musk’s businesses and stakeholdings starting to accept crypto, as Tesla does,” Nuni added.

Such speculations aren’t all unfounded. In April, Musk teased DOGE payments on Twitter in a tweet, proposing dogecoin as one of the payment options for Twitter Blue, the site’s subscription service with premium features.

Musk’s electric car company Tesla already accepts DOGE payments for merchandise purchases on the Tesla Store, and a repeat could be on the cards.

As per a January report, Twitter is designing a system to permit payments through the social media platform, and although billionaire owner Elon Musk wants it “first and foremost” to be for fiat currencies, he wants the ability to add cryptocurrencies later.

Doksuri is heading to East Sea, which could become a super typhoon

Advertisements

Typhoon Doksuri is predicted to make its way into the East Sea of Vietnam and has the potential to become the second major storm of 2023. However, experts assert that the storm is unlikely to directly impact our country’s mainland.

Nguyen Van Huong, the Head of the Weather Forecasting Department at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, confirmed this information in response to reporters on the afternoon of July 24.

The meteorological agency forecasts that Typhoon Doksuri will likely intensify to level 15-16, expected to enter the northeast part of the North East Sea region. If it reaches level 16, it will be classified as a super typhoon.

While the storm is unlikely to make landfall on the country’s mainland, the northeast region of the North East Sea is expected to experience storms and strong winds, which could pose significant danger to ships in the area over the next 48-96 hours.

For the period of July 24-25, specific weather forecasts for various regions are as follows:

July 24: Sea areas from Ninh Thuan to Ca Mau, and the middle and southern regions of the East Sea (including the waters of the Spratly archipelago) can expect strong southwest winds at level 5, occasionally reaching level 6, and at times level 7-8. Seas will be rough, with waves ranging from 2 to 3.5 meters in height.
In the area between and south of the East Sea (including the waters of the Truong Sa archipelago), as well as the sea areas from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang, and the Gulf of Thailand, there will be showers and strong thunderstorms. During these storms, the possibility of tornadoes and strong winds is heightened.

July 25: Sea areas from Ninh Thuan to Binh Thuan, and the middle and southern regions of the East Sea (including the waters of the Spratly archipelago), can expect strong southwesterly winds at level 6, with gusts reaching level 8-9. Seas will be rough, with waves reaching heights of 2-4 meters.

In the North East Sea, there will be strong winds at level 6-7, with gusts at level 9, and rough seas with waves reaching 3-5 meters in height.

While the potential for Typhoon Doksuri to intensify into a super typhoon raises concerns, the forecast indicates that our country’s mainland is not likely to be directly impacted. However, all relevant authorities and individuals are advised to stay vigilant and closely monitor the updates from meteorological agencies to ensure safety during this period.

Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City Police Apprehend Three South Korean Men Linked to Prostitution Ring at District 1 Restaurant

On Monday, authorities in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed the arrest of three South Korean men, Kim Tea Hyung (48), Cha Jinyoung (46), and Lee Hyun Jun (25), on allegations of operating a prostitution ring within a restaurant situated in District 1.

The arrests came after a targeted operation at the Gallery restaurant, located on Bui Thi Xuan Street, which took place on the night of July 19. During the raid, law enforcement apprehended 52 women who were reportedly offering sexual services to customers.

Investigations revealed that Kim and Cha had established the restaurant last year and had employed approximately 80 women to provide sex services to foreign customers, charging fees ranging from VND3-4 million (approximately US$126-170).

With Lee holding the position of general manager, the establishment featured 30 karaoke rooms and exclusively catered to foreign patrons, mainly South Koreans. The police have stated that these karaoke rooms were not legally registered with the authorities.

In addition to the South Korean nationals, Kim had also hired around 20 Vietnamese individuals as managers, staff, and guards.

The modus operandi of the prostitution ring involved the prostitutes accompanying customers, often to hotels or rented apartments.

Following the police operation, Cha attempted to evade capture and was found hiding in Can Tho City. When approached by authorities, he claimed to be waiting for an opportunity to return to his home country.

According to law enforcement, the three South Korean men, along with their Vietnamese accomplices, reportedly profited around VND4 billion from the illicit activities of the prostitution ring.

It is important to note that in Vietnam, sex work has long been regarded as a social issue, and engaging in pimping is considered a criminal offense.
