Foreign Tourist’s Bikini Ride in Vietnam Prompts Public Debate

Advertisements

(Vietnam Insider) – A transport provider has issued an apology following controversy over a foreign tourist wearing a bikini while riding on the back of a motorbike in Du Già commune, Tuyen Quang province of Vietnam.

In recent days, video footage of a foreign visitor in a bikini riding along a scenic mountain road has sparked heated debate online. The road is located near Du Già Waterfall, about 2 km away, in an area known for its ethnic minority communities and cultural traditions.

According to the transport company, which offers motorbike rentals with drivers, the incident stemmed from a “lack of awareness and understanding.” A driver had filmed the tourists returning from swimming at Du Già Waterfall to their homestay, and later uploaded the video to his personal social media account. The clip quickly went viral, garnering more than 1.1 million views.

The company stressed that the tourist did not intentionally choose to wear a bikini in public spaces, and acknowledged that the images were inappropriate given local cultural sensitivities. “We sincerely apologize and will work to ensure this does not happen again,” a company representative told Vietnam Insider.

The firm has since removed the video and instructed drivers not to photograph or film customers in swimwear or other sensitive contexts, nor to post such content online.

This is not the first time such incidents have drawn criticism. In September 2023, a female tourist wearing a bikini danced aboard a boat on the Nho Quế River, prompting divided public opinion. Many argued that such attire was unsuitable since the area is not a beach destination.

Since 2018, Ha Giang province (now merged into Tuyen Quang) has enforced a Code of Civilized Conduct for tourists, which requires “appropriate and respectful clothing, especially when visiting religious sites, cemeteries, and traditional festivals.” After the July merger, Tuyen Quang authorities confirmed they would continue implementing this code.

The provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has instructed travel agencies to remind visitors of local cultural norms, encouraging respectful behavior to promote a friendly, sustainable image of the destination.

In recent years, Du Già Waterfall has become a must-visit stop for international travelers exploring the famous Ha Giang Loop. Located about 70 km from the city center, it can be reached by car or motorbike via Provincial Road 33 (Bắc Mê – Cao Bằng direction) or National Highway 4C through Mậu Duệ, then turning onto DT181 to Du Già.

iPhone 17 Pro Max vs. iPhone 16 Pro Max: What’s New?

Advertisements

Apple’s latest flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, introduces the biggest design overhaul since 2017, along with hardware upgrades that could make it one of the most compelling Pro Max models yet.

Compared to last year’s iPhone 16 Pro Max, the new version offers a refreshed design, improved durability, upgraded cameras, and a larger battery.

Design: Aluminum Returns, Bold New Look

  • Apple has replaced titanium with aluminum, making the device lighter and more comfortable to hold thanks to softer curves and a matte finish. While some may find it less “premium” without the glossy titanium edges, Apple says aluminum improves heat dissipation.
  • The rear combines aluminum and Ceramic Shield 2 glass, with the Apple logo shifted lower for the first time. This may also lower repair costs for back-glass replacements.
  • A striking new color, Cosmic Orange, debuts on the Pro line, alongside silver and blue. Black is absent this year.

Cooling: First iPhone With Vapor Chamber

A vapor chamber cooling system debuts on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, helping to quickly spread and release heat from the battery and logic board. Early tests suggest it significantly improves thermal management — a clear plus for gaming and heavy workloads.

Cameras: Sharper Telephoto, Controversial Design

  • The camera housing stretches across the back in a bold, debated design shift.
  • Triple-lens setup: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto.
  • The telephoto camera jumps to 48MP (from 12MP), enabling better digital zoom: up to 8x “lossless” zoom in daylight and a max of 40x digital zoom. Optical zoom is reduced from 5x to 4x, but Apple promises better results thanks to the higher resolution sensor.
  • The front camera is now 18MP, with a unique square design for easier horizontal/vertical selfies. Low-light performance has improved significantly.

Display: Brighter and More Readable Outdoors

  • 6.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR, 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.
  • Peak brightness increased to 3,000 nits (vs. 2,000 on the iPhone 16 Pro Max).
  • Added anti-reflective coating makes the screen easier to use in direct sunlight.

Battery & Charging: Bigger and Faster

  • First iPhone with a battery over 5,000 mAh — 5,088 mAh, up from 4,685 mAh.
  • Apple claims up to 6 more hours of local video playback and 4 more hours of streaming.
  • 40W wired charging (vs. 25W on the iPhone 16 Pro Max). Wireless charging remains 25W, now with Qi 2.2 support.

Performance: A19 Pro Chip

Powered by the Apple A19 Pro built on 3nm, the new chipset continues Apple’s lead in raw performance. Combined with aluminum casing and vapor chamber cooling, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is pitched as the ultimate iPhone for gamers and power users.

Pricing

  • Internationally, the iPhone 17 Pro Max keeps the same price as last year’s model, unlike the iPhone 17 Pro, which is $100 more expensive.
  • In Vietnam, however, prices are up: the Pro Max now starts at around VND 38 million (up from VND 35 million).

Here’s a quick Pros & Cons comparison table between the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max, optimized for quick reader reference:

Pros of iPhone 17 Pro Max: Bigger battery, faster charging, brighter display, upgraded cameras, better cooling, new design.
⚠️ Cons: Aluminum less “premium” than titanium, fewer color options, optical zoom reduced (5x → 4x), higher local price.

Verdict: The iPhone 17 Pro Max isn’t just an incremental update. With a redesigned chassis, improved thermals, upgraded cameras, and a bigger battery, it sets itself apart from its predecessor. While its aesthetics may divide opinion, performance and usability upgrades position it as Apple’s most ambitious Pro Max yet.

VN-Index Extends Winning Streak to Four Sessions

Advertisements

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index climbed for the fourth straight session on Monday, fueled by strong inflows into steel, banking, and securities stocks, helping the market recover from last week’s sharp 70-point drop.

Ahead of the session, many brokerages expected heavy volatility and possible declines after multiple recovery days on weak liquidity. Instead, the index stayed in positive territory throughout the day and widened its gains toward the close.

By the end of trading, the VN-Index had added more than 17 points to finish just below 1,685.

On HoSE, nearly 240 stocks advanced — three times the number of decliners. Large-cap stocks also saw broad gains, with 22 rising against just six losers.

Key market movers

  • Banks in focus: BID (+3.1% to VND 42,200) was the top contributor to the index, followed by CTG and TCB.
  • Securities rally: Securities stocks surged after the government approved a plan to upgrade Vietnam’s market status. VIX hit the ceiling at VND 37,450, while VND, VCI, and HCM all rose more than 1%. SSI, initially pressured by foreign selling, reversed to end +0.7%.
  • Steel strength: The steel group gained 0.5–2.8%. HPG briefly rose 3% to near VND 31,000 before profit-taking trimmed gains to around 1%.
  • Energy stocks: Oil & gas leaders GAS (+1.1%) and PLX (+0.4%) also closed higher.
  • Other sectors: Aviation, retail, rubber, and energy names also contributed positively.

Market liquidity showed signs of improvement, with more than 1.24 billion shares traded — up 10% from last Friday. Trading value edged above VND 37.6 trillion, with large-cap stocks accounting for nearly VND 20 trillion.

HoSE saw seven stocks exceed VND 1 trillion in trading value. HPG led with VND 2.7 trillion, followed by VPB with VND 2 trillion, while VIX, SSI, SHB, and MSN also ranked high.

Despite the rebound, foreign investors extended their selling streak to a fifth session, offloading over VND 1.3 trillion net. FPT was the most heavily sold (over 6 million shares), followed by HPG, MWG, VND, and NVL.

MB Securities (MBS) expects the short-term trend to remain upward, though the market may see turbulence this week due to ETF rebalancing and derivatives expiration. Large-cap stocks could face pressure, with money likely rotating into mid- and small-cap names.

MBS identified the current support zone at 1,600–1,615 points, with resistance at 1,694–1,700 — about 10–15 points above the present level.

Russian Health Minister Saves Passenger Suffering Hypertensive Crisis on Flight to Hanoi

Advertisements

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko personally administered first aid to a passenger suffering a hypertensive emergency on a Vietnam Airlines flight from Moscow to Hanoi.

Emergency at 30,000 Feet

The incident occurred on flight VN62 on September 11, according to Vietnam Airlines. About two hours after takeoff, a 55-year-old Russian male passenger showed signs of dizziness and fatigue.

Cabin crew initiated emergency medical procedures and broadcast a call for medical assistance. Fortunately, four Russian doctors traveling with the Minister of Health were on board, including Murashko himself. They quickly examined the passenger, who was later diagnosed with an acute hypertensive crisis, as reported by Russian broadcaster RT.

A video shared on social media showed the minister alongside flight attendants as the passenger received treatment.

Successful Mid-Flight Intervention

The doctors conducted an on-the-spot consultation and administered urgent medical care. The passenger was then moved to the premium economy cabin for continued monitoring.

By the time the aircraft landed safely at Noi Bai International Airport, the passenger’s condition had fully stabilized, Vietnam Airlines confirmed.

A hypertensive crisis is a life-threatening condition where blood pressure suddenly rises above 180/120 mmHg. Without immediate treatment, it can cause severe organ damage or even death.

Who Is Minister Mikhail Murashko?

Murashko, 58, has served as Russia’s Minister of Health since January 2020. He previously headed the Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare and has extensive experience in healthcare management.

The Russian Embassy in Vietnam noted that Murashko was leading a delegation on a working visit to Vietnam from September 12–14. His entourage included senior officials from national research centers, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment firms, and Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.

During the visit, the delegation met with Vietnam’s Ministry of Health and toured the Vietnam–Russia International Eye Hospital. The trip followed a May memorandum of understanding between the two countries to strengthen cooperation in biomedical sciences, including information exchange, training programs, and joint scientific conferences.

Viral Video on Social Media

Footage of Murashko assisting the passenger mid-flight was posted on Telegram and X (formerly Twitter) on September 15, quickly attracting more than 35,000 views.

Why International Tourists Are Flocking to Vietnam During the Low Season

Advertisements

Vietnam’s tourism industry has reached an unprecedented milestone: welcoming record numbers of international visitors in July and August — traditionally considered the low season.

Record-Breaking Arrivals in Summer 2025

According to data from the General Statistics Office released on September 6, Vietnam received 1.56 million international visitors in July and 1.68 million in August. These figures surpass the country’s peak season arrivals in September–October 2024 (1.3 and 1.4 million respectively), marking the highest-ever summer visitor numbers in Vietnam’s history.

Tour operators in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Khanh Hoa also reported inbound bookings rising 15–40% year-on-year, highlighting strong international demand despite the off-peak period.

Why Tourists Choose Vietnam in the Off-Peak Season

1. Competitive Prices and Quieter Destinations
For travelers like Natacha Santos from Portugal, Vietnam’s summer offers affordable airfares and less-crowded attractions. “I enjoy visiting during the low season because it’s quieter and more authentic,” she said while exploring Ho Chi Minh City in August.

2. Tourism-Friendly Policies
Experts attribute the surge partly to government initiatives:

  • Aggressive tourism promotion through cultural and culinary events in major cities.

  • Visa policy expansion, including 45-day visa-free entry for more countries.

  • New direct flights and increased frequencies from China, South Korea, India, and Australia, boosting connectivity to destinations like Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, and Da Nang.

3. Diversified Travel Experiences
Vietnam’s summer travel offerings have become more varied, from beach resorts in Da Nang, Phu Quoc, and Ha Long to cultural tours and international festivals.

Global Travel Trends Favor Vietnam

  • Seasonal shift in Western travel habits: Many tourists now travel in summer instead of fall-winter, taking advantage of long holidays and lower prices.

  • Geopolitical and economic changes: Uncertainty in the U.S. and overcrowding in other Southeast Asian destinations (Thailand, Indonesia) make Vietnam a more appealing, affordable, and safe alternative.

  • Extreme heat in Europe: Record-breaking summer temperatures above 46°C in Southern Europe drove travelers to cooler destinations, with Vietnam emerging as a popular choice.

Key Source Markets in 2025

  • China, South Korea, and Taiwan account for 50% of summer arrivals, thanks to short distances and cost-effective travel options.

  • India and Russia showed impressive growth — up 300% year-on-year — supported by new flight routes and relaxed visa policies.

  • Europe, the U.S., and Australia also contributed strongly, with many travelers opting for off-season trips to take advantage of discounts.

A Shift Toward Year-Round Tourism

In the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam welcomed nearly 14 million international visitors, with over 3.2 million in July–August alone. Experts predict that September could see 1.8 million arrivals, continuing the growth momentum into the year-end festival season.

According to Pham Ha, CEO of Lux Group, this trend signals a transformation: “Vietnam’s tourism is moving away from short peak periods to attracting visitors year-round. This provides stability for service providers and reduces reliance on just a few months of high demand.”

Takeaway

Vietnam’s unique mix of affordable travel, improved connectivity, favorable visa policies, and diverse experiences has turned its so-called low season into a new growth engine. The country is no longer just a seasonal hotspot but an all-year-round destination for international tourists.

Police Bust Weapons-Assembly Ring: Thousands of Military-Style Guns and Parts Seized

Advertisements

Hanoi, 15 Sept 2025 — Vietnam’s Criminal Police Department (C02) has dismantled a major illegal weapons network led by Ngô Quang Vỹ, 33, that manufactured and sold thousands of military-style firearms and parts online, authorities announced.

Key facts

  • Leader: Ngô Quang Vỹ (33), from Lâm Thao, Bắc Ninh.

  • Scope: Network operated across multiple provinces with local “agents” and stash houses.

  • Operations: Bought air rifles, pellets and parts from overseas e-commerce sites, then modified and assembled them into lethal firearms using mechanical workshops.

  • Sales channels: YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, Viber and Zalo livestreams and private channels — included installation tutorials and direct sales.

  • 2025 activity: More than 3,500 transactions recorded this year alone.

  • Seizures: Authorities confiscated dozens of completed weapons (including PCP air rifles and shotguns), roughly 130,000 pellets, thousands of parts and machining equipment.

  • Raids: On 13 Sept, nearly 200 officers from C02 and provincial police (Lai Châu, Hà Tĩnh, Bắc Ninh, Hải Phòng) simultaneously searched homes of 33 suspects.

  • Forensics: Initial expert analysis classified the seized guns and core components as military-grade weapons.

How the ring operated

Investigators say the group imported airguns, pellets and spare parts, then used CNC machines and metalworking tools to alter components and convert them into high-power firearms with increased lethality. Finished weapons were hidden in rented properties and sold to buyers nationwide, including customers in mountainous areas seeking hunting arms.

Members promoted sales through social media livestreams, demonstrated assembly and offered shipping instructions. The trafficking business is estimated to have generated tens of billions VND.

Law enforcement response

The operation was led by C02 under the direct supervision of Thượng tướng Nguyễn Văn Long, Deputy Minister of Public Security. The coordinated raids aimed to disrupt production, trace distribution networks and collect evidence for prosecution under laws against manufacturing, storing and trading illegal firearms.

Public safety and next steps

Authorities warn the public about illegal weapons markets online and have called for continued vigilance. Police will pursue criminal charges against suspects and continue investigations into suppliers, money flows and customers who purchased modified firearms.

Vietnam Ranks Third in Southeast Asia’s Booming E-commerce Market

Advertisements

Hanoi – Vietnam’s e-commerce market reached a value of over 25 billion USD in 2024, marking a 20% year-on-year growth and accounting for nearly 10% of the country’s total retail and consumer services revenue. With this milestone, Vietnam now ranks third in Southeast Asia, behind only Indonesia (65 billion USD) and Thailand (26 billion USD), according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The figures were released on September 5 during the E-commerce and Cross-border E-commerce Forum, held as part of the Vietnam International Sourcing 2025 Exhibition in Hanoi.

Vietnam’s e-commerce growth and outlook

Vietnam’s e-commerce industry continues to expand rapidly, with projections estimating the market could reach 63 billion USD by 2030.

Key growth sectors in 2024 included:

  • FMCG products (up 62%)

  • Home appliances and technology (up 41%)

  • Fashion and accessories (up 39%)

This rapid growth has been fueled by rising online consumer demand, logistics improvements, and the increasing global presence of Vietnamese businesses.

Cross-border e-commerce: A new growth driver

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thị Thắng highlighted that many Vietnamese brands and local products are now reaching international markets via global platforms. Vietnamese businesses are expanding their online presence in key markets such as the US, China, EU, Japan, and South Korea, while also exploring opportunities in ASEAN, the Middle East, Russia, and Australia.

Globally, the cross-border e-commerce market was valued at 791.5 billion USD in 2024, with expected growth of over 30% in the coming years. In Vietnam, cross-border e-commerce has become a strategic pillar for national exports, integrated into the Government’s GoGlobal Plan to strengthen international trade.

Strategic plans for 2026–2030

According to the National E-commerce Development Master Plan (2026–2030), cross-border e-commerce will play a central role in building a sustainable digital export ecosystem and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises in global markets.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade, along with the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, is implementing measures such as:

  • Improving institutional frameworks and policies

  • Supporting training and capacity building for businesses

  • Strengthening connections with leading international e-commerce platforms

  • Coordinating with Vietnamese trade offices abroad to promote and expand exports

With strong government support and increasing digital adoption, Vietnam’s e-commerce sector is set to remain one of the most dynamic markets in Southeast Asia.

Da Nang Cyclo Tours Introduce Multilingual Smart Guide Technology

Advertisements

Da Nang – Visitors to Da Nang are now enjoying a unique experience when booking cyclo rides around the city: vehicles are being equipped with smart guide technology that offers real-time commentary in up to 15 languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

On September 15, the Da Nang Tourism Promotion Center announced the trial launch of technology-equipped cyclo tours designed to combine traditional sightseeing with modern digital experiences.

Smart cyclo tours with multilingual commentary

Unlike the usual cyclo ride where tourists simply enjoy the view, passengers are now provided with individual devices and headphones throughout the journey. Using GPS positioning, the system automatically plays audio commentary whenever the cyclo passes a landmark, sharing historical stories, cultural insights, and real-time introductions to attractions.

Tourists can also interact with an AI chatbot integrated into the application to ask questions and learn more about the places they are visiting.

The guide system supports 15 languages, making it convenient for both domestic and international visitors. Popular routes include trips along the Han River, passing iconic destinations such as Dragon Bridge, APEC Park, Han Market, and Han River Bridge.

A new way to experience Da Nang

Da Nang’s cyclo service has long been part of the city’s cultural identity. Traditionally used for transporting goods, cyclos are now mainly used for tourism in destinations like Da Nang and Hoi An.

Since August 15, the trial program has received positive feedback. A total of 83 selected cyclo drivers have undergone training in device operation, foreign language basics, customer service, and local knowledge. The cyclos are also standardized in design, featuring stainless steel frames, cushioned passenger seats, and sunshades.

Health checks and traffic law training ensure that drivers can provide both safe and informative experiences for visitors.

Free service until end of September

According to the service provider, the introduction of smart commentary has significantly increased bookings.

“The smart cyclo tours with multilingual guide service will be free of charge until the end of September. Starting October, passengers will pay the normal ride fare plus a guiding service fee of about 50,000 VND per trip,” the representative said.

With this initiative, Da Nang aims to enhance the appeal of its city tours, blending traditional charm with innovative technology to provide a memorable and modern travel experience for visitors.

Ho Chi Minh City Police Urgently Arrest 3 Youths for Snatching “Cô Hồn” Offerings

Advertisements

Ho Chi Minh City – Police have urgently arrested three young men for stealing offering tables during the “cúng cô hồn” ritual, an act that authorities say constitutes robbery of property.

Three Teenagers Arrested

On September 15, the Criminal Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City confirmed the urgent arrest of:

  • Mai Anh Kiệt (18, resident of Bảy Hiền Ward)

  • Nguyễn Tuấn Hùng (17, resident of Bảy Hiền Ward)

  • Hà Kim Bảo (17, resident of Tân Hòa Ward)

The three are under investigation for property snatching. Another minor, T.Q.Đ. (15), is also being investigated.

The Incident at PNJ Store

Around 4 p.m. on September 6, staff at the PNJ jewelry store on Âu Cơ Street, Tân Hòa Ward, set up an offering table for the traditional cúng cô hồn ritual. The table displayed fruits, candies, roasted chicken, xôi, chè, and 200,000 VND in cash.

Just minutes later, a group of youths on motorbikes stopped in front of the store. One jumped off, forcefully snatched the metal table, causing offerings to scatter across the road, before fleeing with his accomplices.

Although the 200,000 VND was recovered by staff, the stainless steel table — considered store property — was taken.

Series of Thefts Across the District

During police questioning, the suspects admitted to multiple thefts on the same day. Earlier, they had gathered in an alley and planned to steal offering tables from local households during the cô hồn ritual.

They later joined another group of around 10 youths, also roaming to steal offerings. Throughout the day, they managed to snatch several stainless steel tables, fruits, and candies from homes and temples in District 11.

The stolen tables were hidden near a local checkpoint before police tracked them down.

Public Security Concerns

Authorities emphasized that such acts are not harmless pranks but criminal offenses that threaten public order.

“Taking advantage of the cô hồn ritual to steal offerings is a violation of the law and can lead to criminal prosecution,” Ho Chi Minh City police said.

They urged citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and prevent youths from being lured into crimes disguised as “ritual traditions.”

Hanoi Surpasses Bangkok to Rank as Asia’s Second-Best Street Food City

Advertisements

Hanoi has officially beaten Bangkok to claim the title of Asia’s second-best street food city, according to a recent ranking by Time Out.

The magazine praised Vietnam’s capital as a culinary treasure trove, where visitors can discover hidden gems tucked away in narrow alleys, up winding staircases, and on bustling street corners.

A Culinary Wonderland in the Old Quarter

Foodies are encouraged to join the long lines at Banh Mi 25 in Hanoi’s Old Quarter for its famous barbecue pork bánh mì, or venture into tucked-away spaces for a steaming bowl of northern-style pho. Among the city’s many specialties, humble yet flavorful dishes like boiled snails also stand out as must-try experiences.

Why Hanoi Stands Out

According to Time Out, the ranking considered key factors including:

  • Affordability – delicious meals at wallet-friendly prices.
  • Accessibility – ease of finding authentic eats across the city.
  • Dish quality – fresh ingredients and flavors rooted in tradition.

These qualities helped Hanoi rise above Bangkok, long celebrated for its street food culture, in this year’s ranking.

A Growing Global Recognition

Hanoi’s vibrant street food scene is increasingly earning global recognition, reflecting the city’s unique blend of tradition and innovation. For travelers and locals alike, it’s not just about the food—it’s about the experience of savoring dishes that capture the spirit of Vietnam.

Vietnam Among World’s Fastest-Growing Travel Destinations With 21% Surge

Advertisements

Vietnam has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, recording a remarkable 21% growth in the first half of 2025 — a rate matched only by Japan — while global tourism expanded by just 5%, according to the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

Strong rebound in international travel

UN Tourism reported that nearly 690 million international tourist arrivals were recorded worldwide in the first six months of 2025, an increase of 33 million compared to the same period in 2024. Despite regional variations, the figures highlight a robust recovery of global travel.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized that “despite global challenges, international tourism continues to demonstrate resilience and growth momentum.”

For Vietnam, the surge in visitors and revenue has significantly contributed to local economies, jobs, and livelihoods. At the same time, it underscores the need for sustainable and inclusive development, with greater collaboration among local stakeholders.

Vietnam outpaces regional peers

Among major destinations, Vietnam and Japan each grew 21%, followed by Morocco (+19%), South Korea (+15%), Mexico and the Netherlands (+7%), and Malaysia and Indonesia (+9%). France and Spain — the world’s top destinations — grew by 5%, while Hong Kong (+7%) remains below pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier UN Tourism data also ranked Vietnam as the 6th fastest-growing destination in Q1 2025, with a 30% year-on-year rise in international arrivals. Vietnam also placed 2nd globally in recovery compared with 2019 levels (+34%) and 4th in tourism revenue growth (+29% vs. 2024).

According to Vietnam’s General Statistics Office, the country welcomed over 6 million foreign visitors in Q1 alone — the highest quarterly figure in its history. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) noted that this performance makes Vietnam a “bright spot” in Asia-Pacific, where many countries are still struggling to recover from the pandemic.

Policy support and industry efforts

Vietnam’s growth is credited to the tourism sector’s coordinated efforts, ranging from policy development to creative promotional campaigns and diverse product offerings. The government has also introduced supportive measures, including more open visa policies to attract high-spending international travelers.

Global tourism trends

Globally, Africa recorded the strongest growth (+12%), led by North Africa (+14%) and Sub-Saharan Africa (+11%). Asia-Pacific saw an 11% rise, reaching 92% of pre-pandemic levels, with Northeast Asia surging 20% year-on-year (though still 8% below 2019). Europe welcomed nearly 340 million arrivals (+4% vs. 2024 and +7% vs. 2019), with Central and Eastern Europe rising 9%.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that both international passenger traffic and airline capacity grew 7% year-on-year. Hotel occupancy worldwide reached 69% in June, nearly matching last year’s 70%.

Tourism revenue also climbed in many destinations in early 2025: Japan (+18%), the UK (+13% through March), France (+9%), Spain (+8%), and Turkey (+8%).

Inflation remains a challenge

Despite positive growth, UN Tourism’s September survey highlighted persistent challenges such as high transport and accommodation costs. “Tourism inflation” is projected to ease from 8% in 2024 to 6.8% in 2025, but remains above pre-pandemic averages (3.1%) and global inflation levels (4.3%). This may prompt travelers to tighten budgets, opt for closer destinations, shorten trips, or cut expenses.

Vietnam Insider | September 11, 2025 | Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued a directive calling for urgent reports and proposed solutions on the management and oversight of Vietnam’s monetary, gold, and stock markets amid growing concerns about macroeconomic stability and market fluctuations.

The directive, issued under Official Telegram No. 161/CĐ-TTg on September 11 and signed by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, requires key ministries and regulators to provide detailed assessments of current market conditions and propose appropriate management strategies.

Central Bank Tasked with Reporting on Currency, Gold, and Real Estate Credit

The Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has been directed to submit a comprehensive report by September 14, 2025, detailing the implementation of monetary policy. The report must include updates on Exchange rates; Gold prices; Interest rates and Credit flows into the real estate sector

In addition to these updates, the SBV is expected to put forward policy recommendations to help stabilize and better manage the monetary and gold markets. Following the submission, Deputy Prime Minister Phoc will convene a high-level meeting with SBV leadership and representatives from relevant ministries and agencies.

Ministry of Finance to Report on Stock and Bond Markets

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has been tasked with reporting on the stock market, including equities, derivatives, and bonds, by September 15, 2025. The Ministry is also expected to propose specific regulatory and operational measures to address any emerging risks or inefficiencies.

A follow-up meeting will be held with the Minister of Finance, relevant Deputy Ministers, and other key government bodies to review the findings and coordinate next steps.

Coordinated Oversight to Address Market Volatility

The directive underscores the government’s concern over market volatility and its potential impact on economic stability, especially amid global financial uncertainties, exchange rate pressures, and speculative activity in the gold market.

By calling for synchronized monitoring and proactive policy coordination between the central bank and financial regulators, the government aims to safeguard investor confidence, ensure liquidity across markets, and maintain a stable macroeconomic environment.

Europe Holds Interest Rates Steady Amid Global Trade Uncertainty

Vietnam Insider | September 11, 2025 – The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 2% for the second consecutive time, reflecting cautious sentiment in the face of global economic uncertainty—particularly surrounding U.S. import tariffs.

Following its policy meeting on September 11, the ECB stated that inflation across the eurozone remains close to its 2% target, with little change in the outlook. “The Governing Council’s assessment of the inflation outlook is largely unchanged,” the ECB noted, signaling that its decision aligned with investor expectations.

The current rate was set in June 2025 after eight consecutive rate cuts since mid-2024, as the ECB sought to stimulate growth amid tepid economic performance. However, the central bank is now adopting a data-dependent approach, emphasizing flexibility and refraining from forward guidance on future rate moves.

Economic Headwinds from U.S. Tariffs

The ECB’s cautious stance comes as the eurozone faces mounting uncertainty from trade tensions with the United States. Although the European Union (EU) recently signed a trade agreement with the U.S. that included a reciprocal 15% tariff framework, unresolved disputes—such as levies on wine and spirits—continue to create friction.

Investor concerns were further heightened after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened retaliation against the EU for a €3.45 billion ($3.7 billion) antitrust fine imposed on Google. Washington’s aggressive trade posture has fueled volatility in transatlantic economic relations, putting pressure on both investment and exports.

The U.S. remains the EU’s largest trade and investment partner, with European exports to the U.S. totaling €503 billion ($590 billion) in 2024. Yet, despite this strong economic linkage, growth in the eurozone has been sluggish. In Q2 2025, the euro area’s GDP grew by only 0.1%, down significantly from 0.6% in Q1.

Lagarde: Growth Pressures Will Ease in 2026

At the post-meeting press conference, ECB President Christine Lagarde acknowledged that the inflation outlook remains uncertain amid a volatile global trade environment. She pointed to several headwinds—including high import tariffs, a strengthening euro, and intensified global competition—that may continue to constrain the bloc’s economic growth through the end of the year.

However, Lagarde remained cautiously optimistic, forecasting that the negative impacts from these challenges are expected to subside in 2026.

Outlook

With inflation stable but growth fragile, the ECB is likely to maintain a wait-and-see approach in the coming months. Investors will be closely watching upcoming data and policy shifts, particularly any escalation in U.S.-EU trade tensions or changes in the global interest rate landscape.

As Europe navigates this uncertain path, the central bank’s commitment to data-driven decision-making may offer some reassurance—but significant risks to growth and investor sentiment remain.

Northern Vietnam Braces for First Cold Air Masses by Late September

Advertisements

HANOI — Northern Vietnam could begin to feel the first signs of seasonal cold air by the end of September, though meteorologists caution that the early surges will be weak and unstable, bringing little immediate change in temperatures.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported on September 11 that between now and October 10, the number of tropical storms and depressions forming over the East Sea (South China Sea) is expected to remain in line with long-term averages. Typically, this means about two to three systems may form, with one likely making landfall in Vietnam. These storms could impact the mainland, especially coastal provinces.

Widespread heavy rain is forecast in the Red River Delta and across provinces stretching from Thanh Hóa to Quảng Ngãi. Meanwhile, southern Vietnam and other parts of central Vietnam will continue to see frequent showers and thunderstorms, with occasional days of heavy downpours.

Nationwide, the risk of dangerous weather events such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hail, lightning, and strong gusts remains elevated through the forecast period.

According to meteorologists, cold air masses are expected to arrive in northern provinces by late September. However, the intensity will be relatively weak and unstable at first, meaning significant drops in temperature are unlikely in the short term.

Some localized heatwaves may still occur in the northern midlands, the Red River Delta, and areas from Thanh Hóa to Huế during the early part of the forecast period.

Looking further ahead, from now until the end of November, central Vietnam could receive 10–30% more rainfall than average. Should storms or tropical depressions coincide with easterly winds and incoming cold air, meteorologists warn of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall — raising concerns over potential historic flooding events in the central region.
