Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime minister Pedro Sanchez, has tested positive for coronavirus, the prime minister’s office said, adding that both were doing fine.
Both Pedro Sanchez and Begona Gomez were at their official residence following the new measures introduced by the health authorities, said a government of Spain statement.
“The tests carried out in the last hours in Moncloa [the prime minister’s residence] on the people closest to the prime minister have tested positive in the case of his wife, Doña Begoña Gómez,” the statement read.
Pedro Sanchez confirmed a 15-day nationwide lockdown on Saturday as part of state of emergency measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
He said the coronavirus crisis requires “extraordinary decisions”.
Pedro Sanchez said the fight against the coronavirus in Spain would have a “big economic impact”.
He said the government would do “all it can” to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus crisis.
