Official export of durian will help Vietnamese businesses have the opportunity to access a large market and earn higher profits from this fruit.
The first 100 tons of durians in Krong Pak district, Dak Lak province have been officially exported to China under the Protocol on phytosanitary requirements between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China.
This is the result of long-term negotiation efforts of specialized agencies between the two sides and the persistent companionship of the Vietnamese durian producer and exporter community.
This is a valuable opportunity for fresh durian fruit and continues to promise positive negotiation results to open the market for other agricultural products of Vietnam in the near future.
Currently, the durian area of Dak Lak province is over 15,000 hectares, the province has the second largest durian area in the country after Tien Giang province, the estimated harvest in 2022 is 170,000 tons and the output is estimated to 2025 is over 300,000 tons. After the preparation process, Dak Lak province was initially approved by the General Department of Customs of China with 4 codes for durian packing facilities and 23 planting area codes (accounting for 45% of approved planting area codes nationwide) with an area of 1,500 ha (accounting for 18.3% of the durian area for harvest in the province).
Statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs show that, in the first 6 months of the year, durian exports reached 84.38 million USD, up 90.2% over the same period last year. In which, exports to China reached 2.86 million USD, up 123%.
According to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in 2021, the country’s durian output is estimated at 642,600 tons, up 15% compared to 2020. Vietnam mainly exports durian in the form of peeled and frozen segments.
China is Vietnam’s largest market for fresh durian consumption, but it is mainly for small-scale export.
China is the largest durian consumption market in the world today, so official export of durian fruit will help Vietnamese businesses have the opportunity to access a large market, at the same time helping businesses and farmers get higher profits from this specialty fruit.
