Vietnam’s localities want to extend social distancing until the end of April

Eight localities, including Ho Chi Minh city of Vietnam, have proposed extending social distancing until the end of April, according to a survey announced by Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long at a web meeting yesterday afternoon.

Among the 32 respondents of the survey, which was conducted by the national steering committee for Covid-19 infection prevention and control, two localities proposed extending social distancing until April 22, while two others stated that the measure should continue until the end of May. The Saigon Times, a local media reported.

The remaining respondents suggested social distancing should end on April 15.

Speaking at the web meeting, HCMC Chairman said the coronavirus pandemic is developing unpredictably. There is still a high risk of community spread.

“To ensure the pandemic can be brought under control, HCMC proposes continuing social distancing until April 30,” he said.

The national steering committee for Covid-19 infection prevention and control has asked ministries, departments and local authorities to strictly comply with coronavirus infection prevention and control measures, including social distancing, until the prime minister issues further notices after April 15.

The committee suggested that the Government apply the social distancing initiative based on the needs of each locality.

Specifically, localities at high risk should practice social distancing for a week beyond April 15. Meanwhile, localities at low risk should be allowed to lift social distancing rules, while still complying with other preventive measures.

The committee stated that the Government should continue to encourage non-cash payments, restrict flights from other countries and put all people entering Vietnam under a mandatory 14-day quarantine period until April 30.
