According to the Embassy of India in Hanoi, the Indian government issued the Fifth Amendment Plant Quarantine Order of 2026. Specifically, this regulation falls under Notification S.O. 3828(E), dated July 9, 2026. Later, authorities published the decree in the Gazette of India on July 13, 2026, making it effective immediately.
As a result of these new rules, India added Vietnam to the approved origin list for fresh durian (Durio zibethinus). Remarkably, Indian authorities require no additional plant quarantine declarations on certificates. Moreover, they imposed no special import conditions on this commodity.
Meanwhile, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection confirmed the announcement. They emphasized that market access resulted from long-term technical cooperation between both national plant protection agencies. Indeed, this breakthrough demonstrates positive momentum in Vietnam–India agricultural collaboration.
In addition, India offers a massive consumer base with a rapidly growing middle class. Therefore, local demand for premium imported food products continues to rise steadily. Accessing this market enables Vietnamese exporters to diversify their client portfolio. Consequently, firms can reduce reliance on traditional markets while elevating the global stature of Vietnamese durians.

However, India represents unfamiliar territory for domestic suppliers. Initial consumption will likely concentrate in major urban centers. Key distribution channels include high-end supermarkets, imported fruit shops, hotels, restaurants, and e-commerce platforms. Exporters must carefully evaluate consumer preferences, purchasing habits, packaging standards, and transport logistics.
The Plant Protection Department will coordinate closely with Indian officials and relevant Vietnamese ministries. They will partner with trade representatives and industry associations to guide exporters through operational processes. Furthermore, these agencies will resolve any practical hurdles promptly.
Opening the Indian market presents a strong positive signal for the sector. However, long-term success relies on maintaining consistent quality and regulatory compliance. Vietnamese firms must establish brand credibility and stimulate organic consumer demand. Ultimately, this milestone provides substantial expansion opportunities while demanding complete professionalization across production, packaging, cold storage, and logistics chains.
