London, United Kingdom: Kimlong Ly, a young Cambodian writer, thinker and researcher, is increasingly gaining attention in the United Kingdom for his distinctive approach and writings on philosophy, politics and society. Born on 28 March 2003 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kimlong is known for his writing style, which he describes as “unorthodox minimalistic philosophy.” His works explore philosophical and social ideas through unconventional methods.

Kimlong holds a BA (Hons) in Sociology and an MA in International Relations from the United Kingdom. He also holds a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Toulouse, France, and is currently pursuing PhD studies in the UK. Beyond academia, he has become increasingly visible through his writing, interviews and public appearances. He has also received several awards in England, contributing to his growing reputation as a young Southeast Asian intellectual.

Vietnam holds a special place in Kimlong’s personal journey. He has visited the country more than 20 times, travelling to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and other parts of Vietnam. In interview, Kimlong has expressed deep admiration for Vietnam’s rapid development and transformation. His repeated visits have given him an opportunity to observe the country’s economic, social and urban changes firsthand.

Vietnam also holds a deeply personal place in Kimlong Ly’s life. His father once lived in Tây Ninh Province, Vietnam, during the period of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia. That family history has given Vietnam a special significance for him. His connection to Vietnam is both personal and historical, linking his family’s experience during one of Cambodia’s darkest periods with his own appreciation of Vietnam today.
Currently living in the U.K., Kimlong has used his growing presence in Europe to showcase his Cambodian background and perspectives on Southeast Asia. From Phnom Penh to London, his journey reflects the emergence of a new generation of Southeast Asian thinkers engaging with international academic and intellectual life.
Still at the beginning of his career, Kimlong Ly is increasingly becoming a name to watch among young Cambodian writers and thinkers in Europe.
