Things to know before doing a business in Vietnam as a foreigner

Advertisements

Are you considering starting a business in Vietnam as a foreigner? Understanding the intricacies of launching and running a small business in a new cultural and legal environment can be challenging.

According to Sophie Dao, Senior Partner at GBS – Global Business Services LLC, an investment consulting firm in Vietnam, while many local startups expand their businesses internationally, there are also numerous foreign entrepreneurs who have successfully established businesses in Vietnam. However, the process of starting a business in Vietnam as a foreigner remains a significant question for many aspiring companies.

When venturing into the Vietnamese business landscape, it’s crucial to navigate through language, culture, and legal considerations. This article aims to shed light on these vital factors and provide insights into the question of “How to start a business in Vietnam as a foreigner?”

Understanding the business culture in Vietnam is key to launching a successful venture as a foreigner. Business culture is often regarded as the soul of an enterprise, influencing production activities, business decisions, and both internal and external relationships. Vietnam, situated in the Eastern cultural region, boasts a distinct agricultural culture with characteristics deeply rooted in Eastern traditions.

When engaging with Vietnamese partners, introducing yourself and sharing personal details, such as your age, is a common practice. This allows Vietnamese individuals to determine their roles in the conversation, considering the abundance of personal pronouns in the Vietnamese language.

Gift-giving holds significant cultural importance in Vietnam. During Vietnamese Tet holidays, presenting gifts and greeting cards to partners and associates is a customary gesture that strengthens relationships.

Sharing meals is an integral part of community and business activities in Vietnam. Having dinners with local representatives or customers not only aids in relationship development but also helps you understand the local culture.

The etiquette of drinking in Vietnam is unique. Drinking alone is considered impolite; it is customary to toast before taking a sip. Additionally, during work, Vietnamese counterparts often express the need to consider decisions, so sending necessary documents before meetings can expedite the decision-making process.

Initiating negotiations often involves casual conversations unrelated to the main discussion, which is considered a way of ‘creating atmosphere.’ Avoid impatient behavior during this phase. Moreover, it is advisable not to bring up legal aspects or mention your lawyer during negotiations, as Vietnamese counterparts may find this off-putting.

Understanding the slow-paced approach to business situations in Vietnam is crucial. The leisurely attitude towards time, known as “rubber hours,” is a common practice among modern Vietnamese individuals. Patience and adaptability are key virtues when navigating the business landscape in Vietnam as a foreign entrepreneur.

Vietnam’s Export Sector Shines in November 2023

Advertisements

Vietnam’s export sector continued its positive trend, exhibiting a growth of 6.7% in November compared to the same period last year, according to a report by HSBC Bank’s Global Research Department.

The electronics industry emerged as the primary driver of this growth, positioning itself as a bright spot in the country’s economy during the fourth quarter.

Specifically, key contributors to the export surge include computer-related components (up 20.2%) and machinery (up 5%), showing stability and promise. Despite textiles and footwear experiencing stagnation, these gains indicate a positive trajectory, albeit influenced in part by a favorable base effect.

The report highlights the emergence of new export growth potentials in sectors like agriculture, which are displaying robust signs of expansion, contributing to a modest overall improvement by year-end.

However, HSBC advises caution in interpreting the trade outlook due to the persisting challenges in demand from major trading partners. The PMI manufacturing index continued its decline to 47.3 in November, with both output and new orders contracting.

On a positive note, domestic activities serve as a resilient pillar for the economy, with international tourism experiencing a steady recovery. The easing of visa policies since August has played a crucial role in this, leading to a consistent increase in international visitors. November alone saw over 1 million tourists, marking the fifth consecutive month achieving this milestone. With a total of 11.2 million visitors so far, the annual target of 12-13 million visitors for 2023 seems attainable.

Despite the overall positive outlook, challenges persist, especially in the recovery of the Chinese tourist group, which has only reached 30% of 2019 levels. Additionally, competition within ASEAN countries for tourism has intensified, with Malaysia following Thailand in waiving visas for Chinese and Indian tourists.

Addressing inflation, HSBC notes that it remains generally under control. Headline inflation increased by a marginal 0.2% from the previous month, resulting in a softened inflation rate of 3.4% in November compared to the same period last year.

Although domestic rice prices face pressure from rising international prices, declining pork prices have offset this increase. Lower oil prices also contribute to curbing inflation. Notably, medical costs experienced their first increase in four years in November due to changes in national medical service pricing, marking a resurgence of efforts to reform healthcare that were disrupted by the pandemic.

The State Bank of Vietnam observes positive signs, with inflation under control and some stability in the external economic outlook. However, HSBC emphasizes that this doesn’t eliminate the risk of future price increases. Vietnam Electricity raised electricity prices by 4.5% in November, addressing a decline in hydropower output linked to the El Niño phenomenon. Despite potential upside risks, such as food and energy prices, HSBC anticipates the monetary authority to maintain the policy rate at 4.5% throughout 2024.

Bitcoin Surge Blasts $170M in Bearish Shorts as BTC Price Targets $48K

Advertisements

Short traders betting against higher bitcoin (BTC) prices lost some $90 million on Tuesday alone, adding on to the $70 million in short liquidations on Monday.

Bitcoin’s ever-growing prices are leaving at least one group startled by the rapid bumps: Those placing highly leveraged short futures bets aimed at profiting from potential price reversal.

Short traders betting against higher bitcoin (BTC) prices lost some $90 million on Tuesday alone, adding to the $70 million in short liquidations on Monday, according to data source CoinGlass. These may have contributed to the asset’s strength since the start of this week – a move that has seen it jump to $44,000 from $39,000.

Liquidation refers to when an exchange forcefully closes a trader’s leveraged position due to a partial or total loss of the trader’s initial margin. It happens when a trader is unable to meet the margin requirements for a leveraged position (fails to have sufficient funds to keep the trade open).

Large liquidations can signal the local top or bottom of a steep price move, which may allow traders to position themselves accordingly.

Most of these liquidations have occurred on crypto exchanges Binance, OKX and Huobi, data from CoinGlass shows. Trading volumes have surged 25% in the past week, and open interest has grown to $20.2 billion from $17.2 billion at the start of December.

Several factors look to be aiding bitcoin growth. There’s optimism around a possible spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) approval in the U.S., traders pricing in expected rate cuts in the U.S. – which buoys risky bets such as technology stocks and bitcoin – and possible sovereign adoption as bitcoin-friendly leaders take the helm in major economies.

At least one group of traders placed a $200 million BTC futures position over the weekend, as reported, indicative of the high demand for bitcoin exposure. Such moves come alongside continual spot ETF application updates and changes.

Some observers expect bitcoin prices to cross the $48,000 level in the coming weeks.

“The staging for this rally already started in the week beginning 10/23 when BTC managed to overcome the iron-beam resistance in the $30k area,” shared Julius de Kempenaer, senior technical analyst at StockCharts.com, in a note to CoinDesk. “On the weekly chart, the next expected level of resistance is around $48k, the peak set at the end of March 2022.”

“All in all, the trend for BTC is clearly up, with a first target around $48,000 and support near $38,000,” he added.

The last dog meat restaurant in Hoi An officially closed

Advertisements

On December 5, the global animal welfare organization Four Paws and Hoi An City People’s Committee closed one of the city’s last dog and cat meat restaurants. This is considered an effort by the Four Paws organization to save hundreds of animals from being trafficked and consumed at this facility each year.

The dog meat shop closed on December 5, is located in Cam Pho Ward, Hoi An City, and regularly provides raw and processed dog meat to local diners. Mr. Pham Van Quyet – owner of the store said that each year, the store consumed more than 350 dogs, and had been operating for nearly 15 years.

Four Paws has paid attention to this dog meat store since the first time they came to Hoi An, before signing a memorandum of understanding not to wholesale dog and cat meat with Hoi An City People’s Committee in 2021.

Mr. Quyet voluntarily agreed to follow the Hoi An government’s policy to close his business because he no longer wanted to participate in the dog and cat meat trade. As the longest-running store among the three remaining stores in Hoi An, he hopes other dog and cat meat traders will soon act like him.

Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People’s Committee awarded the decision to support livelihood transformation to shop owners.

Ms. Karen O’Malley, Director of Four Paws’ Program to End the Dog and Cat Meat Trade, said: “The closure of this restaurant is a positive step by the Hoi An government in gradually eliminating the dog and cat meat trade.”

Mr. Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People’s Committee, said: “In the past two years, we have successfully implemented several activities in Hoi An City to limit the dog and cat meat trade. Although we know there is still much work to be done, closing this restaurant marks another step forward in phasing out the dog and cat meat trade from the city of Hoi An, and we encourage other cities across Vietnam to do the same.”

According to Four Paws, every year, an estimated 10 million dogs and cats are captured, transported, and slaughtered for meat in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Most of these animals are pets or animals stolen from the community, and stray animals are taken from the streets to supply the trade. The dog and cat trade, in addition to having serious health impacts, also creates favorable conditions for the production of diseases.

BIGTIME, ORDI Tokens Lead Nearly $250M in Altcoin Liquidations

Advertisements

Altcoins futures took a hit Monday as sudden volatility liquidated both longs and shorts, causing unusually high liquidations on some lesser-known tokens.

Unusually high liquidations on some altcoin futures led by Big Time’s BIGTIME and Ordi Protocol’s ORDI tokens created over $250 million in total altcoin liquidations in the past 24 hours, showcasing the inherent and sudden volatility of the sector.

Liquidation refers to when an exchange forcefully closes a trader’s leveraged position due to a partial or total loss of the trader’s initial margin. It happens when a trader is unable to meet the margin requirements for a leveraged position (fails to have sufficient funds to keep the trade open).

These figures were without the liquidations of futures trading bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH), which topped the charts at a cumulative $85 million in evaporated bets.

Some $15 million in ORDI bets were liquidated, followed by $12 million on BIGTIME. These consisted of both longs, or bets on higher prices, and shorts, or bets against. Prices of both these tokens whipsawed in the past 24 hours, impacting traders on either side.

Demand for Bitcoin-linked tokens has created hype for ORDI, which is tied to Bitcoin’s ecosystem – with the tokens gaining 580% in the past month. Meanwhile, an ongoing narrative for crypto gaming platforms has benefited BIGTIME holders, who have gained nearly 400% since the start of November.

Traders of Celestia’s TIA and Memeland’s MEME – both tokens were issued last month – lost some $10 million.

Elsewhere, bets on tokens tied to Terra’s once-titan ecosystem soured, with traders of LUNC, USTC and LUNA losing some $11 million. Prices of these tokens surged up to 70% on Monday on various catalysts, as CoinDesk reported.

Large liquidations can signal the local top or bottom of a steep price move, which may allow traders to position themselves accordingly.

Coinbase’s Rally Still Has Legs, Chart Analyst Says

Advertisements

Shares in the cryptocurrency exchange have rallied nearly 300% this year, and the latest chart pattern suggests further gains could still be in the offing.

Shares in Nasdaq-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN) have surged nearly 300% this year, outperforming leading cryptocurrency bitcoin (BTC) by a significant margin. Per Fairlead Strategies, further gains could be in the offing, as COIN is on track to confirm a long-term base pattern breakout.

Basing involves an asset consolidating in a price range for a prolonged time following a significant sell-off. The energy built up during the consolidation is unleashed in the direction in which the base is breached, that is, to the higher side, in case of a bullish breakout.

“COIN is likely to confirm a long-term base breakout this Friday above near $116 resistance. The breakout is a positive long-term development, suggesting the primary trend has shifted higher,” Fairlead’s analysts team, led by founder and managing partner Katie Stockton, said in a note to clients Monday.

According to analysts, the base breakout has opened doors for a rally toward resistance at $160 and potentially $200.

The chart shows COIN crashed in the first half of 2022, subsequently entering a 15-month-long base formation between $30 and $116.

Last week, prices moved past $116, the upper end of the base pattern, signaling a breakout. The bullish development will be confirmed, assuming prices hold above the said level this Friday. Traders often look for consecutive weekly or daily closes above resistance to confirm breakouts.

Capping of domestic flight tickets increased by maximum of 250,000 VND

Advertisements

The Ministry of Transport has just issued Circular 34/2023 amending and supplementing some provisions of Circular 17/2019 on the pricing framework for passenger transport services on domestic flights.

Accordingly, the ceiling price for domestic flight tickets will be adjusted upwards from April 1, 2024. For flights with a distance of less than 500 km, the ceiling price is set at 1.6 million VND per ticket per leg for socio-economic development flight routes and 1.7 million VND per ticket per leg for other routes. The remaining groups of routes will experience price increases ranging from 50,000 to 250,000 VND per ticket per leg compared to the previous regulations, depending on the length of each route.

Specifically, for flights from 500 km to less than 850 km, the ceiling price is 2.25 million VND per ticket per leg; flights with a distance from 850 km to less than 1,000 km have a maximum price of 2.89 million VND per ticket per leg; flights from 1,000 km to less than 1,280 km have a ceiling price of 3.4 million VND per ticket per leg, and flights with a distance of 1,280 km or more are set at 4 million VND per ticket per leg.

The maximum price includes all passenger fees for an airline ticket, excluding value-added tax and revenues for airport authorities (including passenger service fees, passenger security fees, baggage fees; additional service fees for specific categories).

Here’s why Korean tourists choose Da Nang and Hue for golf

Advertisements

The members of the Vietnam Golf Coast Association (VGC) are currently experiencing a significant influx of tourists from East Asian countries, particularly South Korea, due to favorable winter weather conditions for golf.

Thanks to the mild year-round climate, golf courses in Central Vietnam have become an ideal destination for golfers from countries with harsh winter climates.

According to data from the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, South Korea has become a top market for Vietnam, with over 2.3 million visitors recorded in the first 8 months of 2023. This figure marks a 16-fold increase compared to the same period in 2022.

This trend is evident at premier golf clubs such as Ba Na Hills Golf Club and Laguna Golf Lang Co during the winter months, where tourists from East Asian countries seek to escape the cold weather at home and enjoy ideal golfing conditions.

Ba Na Hills Club golf course

Gary Dixon, the General Manager of Ba Na Hills Golf Club, stated, “Central Vietnam offers diverse experiences, from cuisine to entertainment and cultural values. Direct flights from major cities in East Asian countries to Da Nang have made it more convenient for tourists to come to Vietnam.”

Stephen Banks, the Golf Director at Laguna Golf Lang Co, added, “Tourists from East Asian countries truly appreciate Central Vietnam for its numerous golf options. Not only do they find high-quality golf courses, but Central Vietnam also provides ideal conditions for year-round golf. That’s why many golfers choose this destination to play golf during the winter months.”

VGC golf courses are also making efforts to attract a large number of visitors from East Asian countries. Laguna Lang Co, a complex with award-winning resorts such as Banyan Tree Lang Co, Angsana Lang Co, and Laguna Parkside Residences Lang Co, has even recruited talented Korean chefs to help East Asian visitors feel at home.

The expansion of international flight routes has further facilitated travel between Central Vietnam and South Korea. With a flight time of around 5 hours, there are now many airlines operating up to 20 direct flights per day, connecting major Korean cities such as Seoul and Busan to Da Nang.

Traveling to Central Vietnam has become easier and more convenient for tourists from other East Asian countries as well. In late March, the national airline, Vietnam Airlines, resumed its flight between Da Nang and Tokyo, Japan. Newly inaugurated flights in 2023 include Da Nang – Taipei (Taiwan) and Da Nang – Macau. Additionally, there are service flights between Da Nang and major cities in China such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu.
