Vietnam lost another Covid-19 patient on Monday, a 68-year-old man with diabetes and kidney cancer, raising the total fatalities due to the pandemic to 15.
Tagged as “Patient 522,” the man was a resident in Thang Binh District of Quang Nam Province that borders the central Da Nang City, the Covid-19 epicenter.
As the Health Ministry announced late Monday, he died of severe pneumonia caused by Covid-19, complications of severe respiratory failure, pulmonary artery obstruction as a result of kidney cancer, which caused bladder and lung metastases, chronic kidney failure, and type 2 diabetes.
On July 9, he was admitted to the Da Nang Hospital in Da Nang for his kidney diseases. He was discharged on July 22. Eight days later, he was diagnosed with Covid-19.
On July 31, he was transferred to the Hue General Hospital in the nearby Thua Thien-Hue Province for treatment as his conditions got worse.
Since August 5, he continuously suffered respiratory failure, high fever and gastrointestinal bleeding.
On August 10, he started to lose consciousness. Gradually, his heartbeat slowed down and blood pressured dropped.
He died at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Monday alone saw four Covid-19 deaths. The other three are aged 33, 47 and 66. All of Vietnam’s Covid-19 deaths have had comorbidities, renal failure being the most common.
Vietnam has recorded 389 domestic cases in 15 cities and provinces since community transmission of the pandemic resurfaced on July 25. All cases are linked to Da Nang, a top tourist attraction and now the country’s Covid-19 epicenter.
Ever since the pandemic broke in Vietnam, the country has recorded 847 cases. Of them, 433 are active and 399 have recovered.
