Da Nang: Hai Van Ward Rescues and Releases Two Rare Wild Animals into the Forest

On the afternoon of September 13, while patrolling Sub-compartment 14 on the Hai Van Pass, a patrol team from the Hai Van Border Guard Station spotted a suspect engaged in illegal wildlife poaching. Upon sighting law enforcement officers, the suspect fled into the forest, leaving behind two animals suspected of being rare, protected wildlife.

By the morning of September 14, the Hai Van Border Guard Station collaborated with the Hai Van Ward People’s Committee and local Forest Protection authorities to verify the species. The animals comprised one Asian leaf turtle (Cyclemys dentata) weighing about 4 kg and one reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) weighing roughly 5 kg. Both species are listed under Group IIB of endangered, precious, and rare forest wildlife under Decree No. 06/2019/ND-CP, amended and supplemented by Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP.

Competent authorities completed the required legal documentation and returned both animals to their natural habitat in accordance with statutory regulations. Nguyen Thuc Dung, Chairman of the Hai Van Ward People’s Committee, personally oversaw the release, supporting local biodiversity and safeguarding the area’s natural ecosystem.

The Hai Van Ward People’s Committee urged the public to refrain from hunting, killing, caging, transporting, trading, or consuming wildlife and illegal wildlife products. When discovering rare or endangered animals, citizens must not capture, trade, or harm them. Instead, they should promptly notify municipal authorities—including the Ward People’s Committee, Forest Protection agencies, or the Border Guard—to ensure the animals are safely received and returned to the wild.

Under Government Decree No. 06/2019/ND-CP, as amended by Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP, illegal acts of hunting, killing, keeping, caging, transporting, or trading forest animals—especially endangered, precious, and rare species—are strictly prohibited and subject to legal prosecution.
