After a five-year wait since the previous installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially hit theaters worldwide starting July 31. The film quickly became the focal point of discussion in the cinephile community by delivering numerous nods to the original comics and previous Spider-Man iterations, while opening up new developmental paths for Peter Parker within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is taking the global box office by storm.
Alongside breathtaking action sequences and fan-favorite easter eggs, for Vietnamese audiences, a detail lasting just a few dozen seconds was enough to spark a wave of excitement on social media. It was the mention of Vietnamese banh mi—a dish already intimately familiar to Vietnamese people, now unexpectedly showing up in one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year.
“Banh mi time” – The Line That Thrilled Vietnamese Theaters
In a scene where Peter Parker (Tom Holland) visits the apartment of MJ (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), the trio chat and play video games together. Even though the events of the previous film left MJ and Ned with no memory of who Peter Parker is, Ned remains overwhelmingly excited to meet his idol—Spider-Man. He continuously fires off questions he has always harbored about the famous superhero.

While the group is engrossed in their game, Ned’s watch suddenly goes off. He cheerfully announces, “Banh mi time!”
Hearing this, MJ curiously asks, “Did you order banh mi?”
Ned immediately replies with overflowing enthusiasm, “Ordered five of them! With Spider-Man coming over, we’ve got to make sure he’s well-fed.”
Right after, Peter also visibly lights up at the mention of banh mi, and Ned quickly jumps up to grab the food.

Banh mi is the Vietnamese dish mentioned in the latest installment of Spider-Man.
It is just a short dialogue, but it is enough to make many Vietnamese viewers smile and cheer. On social media, numerous videos capturing audience reactions in theaters showed entire screening rooms collectively gasping and applauding when the characters uttered “banh mi.” In particular, what surprised many was that the Hollywood cast used the exact name “banh mi” instead of translating it into an English word like “sandwich.” Their pronunciation was also rated as quite accurate, making the moment feel intimate and instilling a sense of pride among Vietnamese viewers. Many Marvel fans noted that while this is a very minor easter egg, it is a memorable detail, as it is rare for a Vietnamese dish to be called by its authentic name and appear so naturally in a blockbuster with a global release scale.
Banh Mi – Vietnam’s Famous Culinary “Ambassador”
The appearance of banh mi in Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes as no real surprise given the dish’s immense footprint on the global culinary map.
Over the years, banh mi has continuously earned spots on international food rankings and been praised by numerous prominent magazines and travel guides as one of the world’s best sandwiches. From CNN, National Geographic, and The Guardian to Lonely Planet, various international media outlets have lauded the harmonious combination of crispy crust, rich fillings, and distinct flavor profiles unique to Vietnamese banh mi.

Notably, since 2011, the word “banh mi” has been officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary without translation, making it one of the few Vietnamese food names internationally recognized by its original title. In recent years, the culinary authority TasteAtlas has also repeatedly ranked Vietnamese banh mi among the world’s top-rated sandwiches, further cementing the street food’s magnetic appeal to international diners.
Beyond charts and rankings, banh mi has become a social media phenomenon. Countless international TikTokers, YouTubers, and content creators visiting Vietnam dedicate time to experience, review, and share their quests for the best banh mi spots. Netizens have even popularized terms like “banh mi obsession” and “banh mi lover” to express their devotion to the dish.

A Small Detail with a Big Meaning
Given the massive draw of the Spider-Man franchise and millions of viewers worldwide, having Vietnamese banh mi referenced in a casual, fleeting scene still carries significant weight.
This is not only a natural integration of culinary culture that brings the image of Vietnam closer to a massive international audience, but it also demonstrates filmmakers’ growing attention to globally familiar cultural symbols to create a sense of authenticity and intimacy in their work. For Vietnamese viewers, hearing Hollywood stars correctly pronounce those two syllables—”banh mi”—is perhaps one of the most delightful and memorable details of the film, adding a little extra pride to the footprint of Vietnamese cuisine on the global silver screen.
